Chapter 45 - Chapter 44 :The Shattered Mirror

The silence in the medical suite was broken by the sharp, rhythmic clack of boots on the marble floor outside.

"Elara?"

Julian's voice was like a physical blow. Elara scrambled to hide the tablet, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped it. David's eyes were wide with a terror so pure it made Elara's blood run cold.

The door slid open. Julian stood there, his coat discarded, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the tattoos that marked him as the Don. He looked at Elara, then at David, and finally at the silver drive still protruding from the tablet.

The Jealousy that usually defined him was gone, replaced by something much colder: Betrayal.

"I spent the last hour wondering why my internal firewall was screaming," Julian said, his voice a terrifying, quiet whisper. He walked into the room, his presence shrinking the walls. "I thought maybe Thorne had found a way to bridge the gap. I never thought the breach would come from my own bed."

"Julian, I can explain," Elara said, stepping in front of David.

"Explain what?" Julian roared, his control finally snapping. He grabbed the tablet, ripping the drive out with such force the port snapped. "That you're still a fed at heart? That you've been playing the part of the devoted Shadow while you dig through my past like a scavenger?"

"We saw the video, Julian!" David screamed from the bed, his voice cracking. "We saw you! You were there the night our parents died! You weren't a savior; you were a butcher!"

Julian froze. The rage in his eyes shifted into a jagged, agonizing pain. He looked at Elara, searching for the trust that had been the only thing keeping him human.

"You think you saw the truth," Julian rasped, his eyes glistening with unshed tears of fury. "You saw a boy trying to stop a massacre his father started. I didn't set that fire, Elara. I went in to pull you out, even after my father told me to let you burn."

"Then why hide the footage?" Elara challenged, her voice breaking. "Why keep me in this 'Golden Cage' if you had nothing to fear from the truth?"

"Because the truth is a poison!" Julian stepped into her space, his hand catching the back of her neck, pulling her close. His touch wasn't tender; it was a desperate, suffocating claim. "I wanted you to love me for the man I am now, not the boy who failed to save your mother. I own you, Elara. Not because of a ring, but because I'm the only thing between you and the people who actually want you dead."

He turned to David, his face a mask of obsidian ice. "Leo! Take the boy to the sub-level cells. No more light. No more tablets."

"Julian, no!" Elara lunged for him, but he caught her around the waist, lifting her off her feet as David was dragged screaming from the room.

The love had turned into a Dark Tragedy. Julian carried her back to the master suite, ignoring her strikes and her tears. He slammed the door, locking it with a biometric sweep.

"You wanted to know where the protection ends and the ownership begins?" Julian hissed, pinning her against the door, his body a wall of iron. "You just found the line, Nightingale. From now on, you don't leave this room. Not for the Bureau. Not for your brother. Only for me."
