Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: Bailing Out Dom

Bailing Out Dom

The relentless Los Angeles afternoon sun beat down heavily on the scorching concrete outside the main headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Arthur stood casually in the designated temporary parking zone directly across the bustling street.

He leaned his broad, muscular shoulders comfortably against the side of a worn, inconspicuous cargo van, pulled a cigarette from his pocket, and lit it with a smooth flick of his lighter.

He took a slow, deep drag, exhaling a thin cloud of gray smoke that quickly vanished into the sweltering, smog-choked city air.

Mia had finally woken up from her deep, exhausted slumber around noon today.

Despite her desperate, tearful insistence on coming along to personally retrieve her brother, Arthur had firmly and absolutely refused to let her step foot anywhere near the heavily guarded police station.

He had already successfully paid the massive, exorbitant bail amounts using the cold cash she had provided, but the suffocating federal bureaucracy still required a mountain of tedious, official paperwork to be processed before the physical release could be authorized.

Therefore, Arthur had left the chaotic, crowded interior of the station first, choosing to wait outside in the sweltering heat.

He leaned against the metal chassis of the van, seemingly completely relaxed and merely smoking a casual cigarette to pass the time.

In reality, his supernaturally enhanced senses were dialed to their absolute, terrifying maximum. His dark, calculating eyes swept meticulously over the surrounding urban environment, actively searching for the precise locations of the hidden surveillance elements he could feel boring into his back.

Shortly after walking out the heavy glass doors of the police station, Arthur's heightened physical intuition had picked up the undeniable, prickly sensation of a heavy gaze permanently fixed directly on him.

However, despite casually shifting his position and searching the nearby rooftops and tinted windows for a long, quiet moment, he couldn't pinpoint a physical human observer.

Of course, Arthur's highly intelligent mind was absolutely not without its logical suspicions.

While heavy, municipal surveillance cameras weren't entirely ubiquitous across every single inch of the United States, this was the fortified main headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Naturally, there would be absolutely no shortage of high-definition, government-grade surveillance equipment actively monitoring the immediate perimeter.

Within a few short, observant minutes, Arthur's sharp eyes discovered at least three concealed, dark-domed surveillance cameras mounted strategically on the concrete architecture, their lenses perfectly angled to continuously observe his exact vicinity.

However, he was completely, mentally prepared for the unavoidable, tactical reality that actively helping Dominic Toretto would permanently drag him into the blinding federal spotlight.

Thus, Arthur absolutely didn't make a single, deliberate effort to hide his handsome face or shrink away from the lenses.

Because from the exact, fateful moment he had confidently agreed to Mia's desperate request to help rescue Dom, Arthur knew with terrifying certainty that he would definitely be violently targeted by the massive investigative apparatus of the FBI.

After waiting patiently in the sweltering heat for nearly a full, agonizing hour, he finally heard the heavy, reinforced security doors of the Los Angeles Police Department buzz loudly open.

Four young, deeply exhausted individuals walked out into the blinding afternoon sunlight, including a towering, intensely imposing man with a prominently shaved head.

It was precisely Dom and his fierce, loyal girlfriend, Letty.

They were flanked closely by two of their most trusted, core companions and loyal subordinates: Jesse and Leon.

Arthur's borrowed van was parked perfectly in their direct line of sight in the temporary parking area just across the bustling street.

Therefore, the absolute second Dom and the others walked out of the heavy station doors, standing on the high concrete steps and looking down at the street level, they immediately saw the rugged, imposing figure of Arthur leaning casually against the van, calmly smoking a cigarette.

"Dom!"

Letty was the absolute first to spot Arthur. She lightly patted her towering boyfriend's broad back, her dark eyes flashing with genuine, unfiltered surprise.

Dom immediately looked in the exact direction her calloused hand was pointing.

He quickly saw Arthur waiting perfectly in the shadows of the van, and a faint, highly genuine trace of a relieved smile couldn't help but slowly appear on his originally somber, heavily stressed face.

"Hi!"

The exhausted group quickly walked down the concrete steps, the heavy weight of their grueling, twenty-four-hour federal detention slightly lifting from their shoulders. Dom took the absolute initiative to stride directly over to Arthur and firmly extend his massive, calloused hand.

"Thanks!"

Dom's voice was a low, heavy rumble. He was still exactly as fiercely taciturn and guarded as ever, but Arthur's sharp eyes could clearly see that Dom absolutely no longer harbored a single, lingering trace of hostility or dangerous suspicion toward him.

Dom's girlfriend, Letty, also offered a rare, genuine smile and lightly patted Arthur's muscular shoulder with undeniable approval.

"Kid, not bad at all!"

Yesterday afternoon, when the notorious, highly expensive lawyer Scott Lyman had confidently strolled into the holding area to apply for a brief, private legal meeting with them ,and subsequently informed Dom and the others that he was there to aggressively handle their massive bail applications ,Dom and his loyal crew immediately knew this was absolutely not something the young, inexperienced Mia could have ever accomplished on her own.

After all, although Mia was now a beautiful eighteen-year-old woman, just last year, she was actually still walking the halls of a local high school as an innocent, protected teenager.

After she had quietly dropped out, although Dom had heavily funded her and actively helped Mia open the small, neighborhood diner, his strict protection was strictly limited to that specific, safe environment.

He had absolutely, fiercely never let his little sister get involved in the dark, highly illegal hijackings and dangerous street operations he was actively running in the shadows.

So, when the ruthless, high-profile lawyer miraculously appeared out of nowhere and easily, flawlessly handled the impossible federal bail for them, Dom and the others knew with absolute, concrete certainty that this was definitely not something Mia could pull off without highly capable, powerful help.

Seeing Arthur waiting calmly for them right now, Dom suddenly had a profound, massive realization.

Initially, locked inside the cold holding cells, they had been desperately wondering if Mia had somehow managed to find the aggressive Vince and the other heavy hitters of the crew to organize the expensive legal rescue.

But Vince and several others had been severely bleeding and heavily recuperating in the secure county hospital recently, directly because they had been brutally, physically taught a harsh lesson by Arthur during their previous violent encounter.

Consequently, Vince and the others were naturally, completely unable to participate in the high-stakes underground car race that had disastrously led to the core group being violently arrested a short while ago.

Arthur firmly shook Dom's massive, extended hand, completely unfazed by the larger man's crushing grip, and also nodded politely at Letty with a flawless, confident smile.

"This absolutely isn't the right place to talk," Arthur stated smoothly, his low voice radiating total tactical control. "Let's head back immediately."

"Mia is anxiously waiting for you at home!"

Although he absolutely wasn't well-acquainted with the other two exhausted men who had been violently arrested alongside Dom, his highly intelligent mind perfectly recognized them from his previous observations.

Jesse and Leon were highly specialized, core members among Dom's loyal subordinates.

The two of them, along directly with the hospitalized Vince and the others, flawlessly formed the absolute, beating heart of Dom's elite racing and hijacking team.

After Vince and the others were brutally injured and incapacitated by Arthur, the highly technical Jesse and the observant Leon were the absolute last remaining pillars of Dom's core operational team.

So, after they were all violently arrested together on the dark asphalt, Mia genuinely hadn't even had a single, capable person left on the chaotic streets to turn to for desperate help.

That was the exact, undeniable reason she had desperately sought out Arthur.

Dom and the others clearly, silently understood this heavy reality as well.

Because their high-performance, nitrous-injected cars involved massive, highly illegal street modifications, they legally had to be permanently impounded at the secure police station lot for an extended, indefinite period of time.

They could only be legally reclaimed once their complex engine configurations were completely, heavily restored to their slow, factory-stock conditions.

So, strictly in order to actively pick them up without drawing further federal heat with a high-profile sports car, Arthur had organically gone to Old Parker's dusty repair shop before coming to the station and temporarily borrowed a completely unremarkable, generic cargo van.

Fortunately, Dom and the others weren't the arrogant type to care about riding in a beaten-up work vehicle at a time like this.

Nodding in heavy agreement, the exhausted group quickly filed into the dark back of the van, and Arthur aggressively drove them away from the federal crosshairs, heading straight for the safety of their home.

Meanwhile, deep inside the heavily air-conditioned, sterile interior of the Los Angeles Police Department, inside a highly secure surveillance monitoring room.

Brian O'Conner, his bruised body heavily wrapped in thick white medical bandages from the violent beating he had taken, stood tensely behind several senior, grim-faced FBI agents.

They were all intently looking at the glowing surveillance monitors together, which clearly displayed the high-definition footage of Arthur calmly picking up Dom and his loyal crew from the street outside.

"This specific person ,Brian, do you know him?"

One of the senior, highly experienced Black FBI agents suddenly pointed a firm finger directly at Arthur's calm face on the glowing screen and asked Brian.

Brian's bruised forehead furrowed deeply in genuine pain and concentration as he stared at the slightly grainy, zoomed-in image of the young man leaning against the van.

He logically felt like the imposing guy looked incredibly familiar, but his concussed, throbbing brain absolutely couldn't recall exactly where he had seen him on the chaotic streets for the moment.

He shook his blonde head in heavy frustration. "I seem to have some vague, lingering impression of him, but I genuinely cannot remember exactly where I've seen him before."

"Is there such a capable, highly connected person actively operating among Dom's known men?" the FBI agent pressed.

"Is he currently listed anywhere in the active FBI surveillance files?"

The Black agent shook his head in absolute denial. "No, there is absolutely no one matching that specific physical description currently documented in Dom's core hijacking team."

He turned to the local authorities. "Captain, does your Los Angeles Police Department have any actionable intelligence or background information on this unknown person?"

Hearing this direct question, a stern, middle-aged Caucasian LAPD Captain immediately stepped forward and replied, "Yes, though absolutely not much."

"His legal name is Arthur Sterling. He is only eighteen years old."

"This seemingly unremarkable kid is the exact same person who personally, aggressively walked in and hired the high-profile star lawyer to successfully bail out Dom and the others."

"The LAPD has already conducted a rapid, deep-dive background check!"

"We currently have absolutely zero criminal record or prior gang affiliations related to him on our end. He is completely, undeniably clean."

The LAPD Captain sighed in heavy, bureaucratic frustration. "Furthermore, the notorious lawyer he just hired is incredibly troublesome, highly expensive, and personally knows several powerful state senators."

"Therefore, exactly since your federal agency absolutely cannot currently provide a single shred of hard, physical evidence proving that Dom and his street crew are indeed the infamous California Highway Bandits, we can legally only detain them for a maximum of forty-eight hours."

In the sprawling United States legal system, powerful, highly expensive 'shark' defense lawyers mostly have massive, undeniable political backgrounds and deep judicial connections.

The seasoned FBI agents in the room understood the LAPD's massive, legal helplessness very well.

But the bandaged, battered Brian was incredibly irritable and blindingly furious at watching his prime targets walk completely free.

"Captain!" Brian argued aggressively, his voice tight with raw pain and professional frustration. "According to my deep, undercover investigation during this entire period, Dom and his loyal crew perfectly meet almost every single, exact criteria for the California Highway Bandits."

"The highly modified performance cars we temporarily impounded tonight," Brian insisted, pointing violently at the paused surveillance frame, "are the exact same, highly specific models as the black cars that have repeatedly appeared in several violent, armed highway robberies."

"I have absolute, undeniable reason to suspect that Dom and the others are the exact California Highway Bandits we have been hunting!"
