Chapter 97 - Chapter 97: Trial day

*Day 1*

The morning air outside the courthouse was thick with tension—and flashing lights.

Paparazzi crowded the steps, cameras clicking and shutters firing, capturing every movement, every glance.

Lillian Parker gripped Chloe's hand tightly as they stepped out of the car.

Her heart hammered in her chest.

"I don't like this," Lillian whispered, her voice tight.

"You look fine," Chloe said, giving her a teasing grin.

"Fine and ridiculously beautiful, as usual. You're going to survive."

Lillian shot her a side glance.

"Thanks. That helps a lot."

Chloe shrugged.

"It's my specialty."

From behind them, Sebastian Wolfe emerged, impeccably dressed, his presence immediately commanding.

His hand reached out for Lillian's. When she took it, the touch was grounding, warm.

"Stay close," he murmured.

"I've got you."

Lillian's cheeks warmed.

He stepped slightly ahead, forming a shield between her and the cameras, his long coat brushing past the reporters' lenses.

Every flash seemed to explode against the black fabric, Sebastian's calm energy absorbing it all.

Chloe nudged Lillian.

"See? He's like a human umbrella."

"Shh," Lillian muttered, but a small laugh escaped her.

The crowd parted as the trio approached the courthouse entrance.

Security ushered them through the side doors, but even then, reporters' microphones poked toward them, shouting questions.

"Miss Parker! Do you have anything to say about the trial?"

"Mr. Wolfe, is this about Ethan Bennett?"

Sebastian kept his voice low, calm, almost soothing.

"No statements today. Follow me."

He guided Lillian and Chloe down a side corridor, keeping a protective arm lightly around her back.

Every step felt surreal—the glare of the media outside, the knowledge of what awaited inside.

As they entered the courtroom, the atmosphere shifted completely.

The room was hushed, sterile, formal.

Lawyers murmured quietly.

clerks scurried to their places, and the judge's bench loomed at the front.

And then Lillian saw him.

Ethan Bennett.

He was led in by two officers, handcuffed, his usual smirk plastered across his face.

He glanced at the gallery, his eyes landing briefly on Lillian.

Something in his gaze made her stomach twist.

Old memories, anger, and a lingering twinge of something she refused to name collided.

Sebastian noticed immediately.

He subtly shifted, placing himself slightly in front of her.

His hand brushed hers once more, squeezing gently.

"I've got you," he murmured again, voice low, private.

Lillian drew in a shaky breath, trying to steady herself.

"He's… here."

"Yes," Sebastian said calmly.

"And he's not leaving this room alive. Emotionally, at least."

Chloe snickered.

"Good. I like him more already."

Lillian shot Chloe a warning look, then glanced back at Sebastian.

He offered a faint smile, his eyes reassuring.

"Focus," he said softly.

"Right now, we're together. That's all that matters."

She nodded, leaning slightly against him for grounding.

The bailiff called the room to order.

The judge entered, and everyone rose.

Lillian felt her pulse spike, adrenaline mixing with fear.

Sebastian's hand found hers again under the table, their fingers intertwining discreetly.

"You're going to be fine," he whispered.

"I hope so," she admitted.

The lawyers began opening statements.

Lillian listened, trying to stay calm, but every detail about the attack, every mention of Ethan, made her hands clench into fists.

Sebastian kept a steady grip on her, his thumb brushing her knuckles in small, soothing motions.

She leaned closer, resting her head near his shoulder when possible, letting his presence anchor her.

"You're amazing," he murmured.

"Focused, poised. Exactly what I expected."

Lillian looked up at him, startled.

"Really?"

"Absolutely," he said, his gaze warm but intense.

"You're doing perfectly. Ignore him."

Ethan shifted in his seat, his cuffed hands resting awkwardly in front of him.

He caught Lillian's eye again, sneering. Something in the look felt old, personal.

Lillian's chest tightened.

"I… I don't know if I can keep calm."

"You can," Sebastian replied firmly.

"Look at me. Not him. Just me."

She obeyed, drawing in a deep breath.

The strength in his voice, the calm in his eyes, made the tension inside her loosen slightly.

The opening statements concluded.

The prosecutor's voice had painted a stark picture of Ethan's actions, and the defense had begun their carefully rehearsed rebuttals.

The atmosphere in the room was heavy, charged with anticipation.

Chloe leaned slightly toward Lillian.

"You're surviving. Barely, but surviving."

Lillian managed a small, tight-lipped smile.

"Thanks for the reassurance."

Sebastian leaned down slightly, speaking just for her.

"Remember, he's in handcuffs. He can't touch you. He can't scare you. And I won't let him."

Her shoulders relaxed fractionally.

"I know."

They exchanged a small, private smile, a bubble of connection amid the tension.

As the trial continued, Sebastian subtly adjusted his posture whenever a camera angle threatened to catch Lillian, shielding her quietly, deliberately.

Every protective gesture, every small touch, reminded her that they were a team—united in every way.

Hours passed.

Witnesses were called.

Evidence was presented.

Ethan's arrogance never wavered, even in handcuffs, but Lillian felt more confident knowing Sebastian was there, unwavering, calm, and protective.

During a short break, Sebastian leaned close to her.

"How are you holding up?"

"I… better than I expected," she admitted, brushing a stray hair behind her ear.

"Mostly because of you."

"You make me want to be better," he replied softly.

"Stronger. Calm. Focused. All for you."

Lillian felt warmth rise in her chest, a flutter that reminded her why she trusted him so completely.

"I… I don't say this enough, but thank you. For everything. For being here. For… protecting me."

He gave a small, fond smile.

"Always. And it's nothing extraordinary, Lillian. It's just… us."

She leaned slightly against him, savoring the moment, brief but grounding amid the chaos.

As they returned to their seats, Lillian caught Ethan glancing their way one last time before the judge resumed proceedings.

He seemed to sense the unshakable bond between them—an invisible barrier he couldn't breach.

Sebastian leaned toward her once more, voice just above a whisper.

"See? He's powerless. And so is all this outside noise. Right now, it's only us."

Lillian's chest lifted, a small smile breaking through.

"It's… good to know."

"Yes," Sebastian murmured.

"It's very good."

The gallery settled.

Cameras clicked and flashed from the public area, but inside their bubble, Sebastian's quiet protection held Lillian steady, her fear dissipating under the weight of his presence.

The judge called the next witness, and Lillian drew a deep breath.

She knew the day would be long, and the trial far from over, but with Sebastian at her side, with Chloe nearby, she felt ready to face it all.

Ethan Bennett might have been in handcuffs.

The media might have been relentless.

But she wasn't alone—and that made all the difference.

And in that moment, amidst tension, flashing cameras, and whispered threats, Lillian Parker felt a flicker of calm.

A flicker of strength.

A flicker of hope.
