Chapter 36 - Threshold of Control

The forest did not welcome victory.

It absorbed it.

Silently.

As if the fall of the Gravemaw meant nothing.

Kai stood where the massive body had collapsed, the ground still slightly indented beneath its weight. The air carried a faint metallic scent now—blood, earth, and something heavier lingering beneath it.

But there was no pause.

No moment of triumph.

Only continuation.

After the Gravemaw

Kai stepped away from the corpse.

Not quickly.

Not slowly.

Measured.

His breathing had stabilized, but his body still carried the aftereffects of the fight. The earlier impacts hadn't disappeared—they had settled into a dull, constant pressure across his ribs and shoulder.

Manageable.

But present.

He adjusted his grip on the sword.

Tested his stance.

Still stable.

Still controlled.

System Response

The system appeared again, more active than usual.

Kai exhaled quietly.

That—

Would matter.

Fights like that wouldn't be rare in deeper zones.

Moving Forward

He didn't turn back.

Didn't reconsider.

He continued deeper.

The trees thickened further.

Light barely reached the ground now.

Shadows layered over each other, creating uneven patches of darkness that distorted depth and distance.

Kai didn't rely on sight alone.

He listened.

Felt.

Moved with intention.

A Different Kind of Silence

There were no immediate threats.

But that didn't mean safety.

It meant—

Something else.

Kai activated Hybrid Vision briefly.

The result was different than before.

Less scattered movement.

Fewer small creatures.

But—

Denser signals.

Stronger ones.

Further apart.

Territory.

Larger predators.

He deactivated it.

That level of input—

Not needed yet.

SYSTEM QUEST UPDATED

Independent Path Progress: 62%

New Objective:

Maintain control under extended isolation

Engage multiple high-tier threats consecutively

Reward Increase: +80 XP, +70 RP

Kai dismissed it.

His pace didn't change.

First Sign

A low vibration.

Not from the ground.

From the air.

Subtle.

But steady.

Kai stopped.

Tilted his head slightly.

Then—

A shadow moved across the ground.

Above.

Aerial Threat

Kai looked up just as something dropped.

Fast.

Too fast to track normally.

He activated Hybrid Vision instantly.

Trajectory locked.

He shifted—

Barely.

Claws tore through where his shoulder had been.

A Skyrend Talonbeast.

Winged.

Lean.

Built for vertical attacks.

It didn't land fully.

Hovered.

Circling.

Immediate Shift

Kai adjusted his stance.

Lower center of gravity.

Eyes tracking movement—not directly, but peripherally.

The creature shrieked—

Then dove again.

Kai didn't activate full scan.

Just a flash.

Enough to confirm angle.

He stepped sideways—

Then forward.

Blade rising—

CLANG.

The strike deflected off its talons.

Hard.

But not useless.

The creature pulled back.

Now—

It was cautious.

Not Alone

A rustle.

From the side.

Kai didn't turn.

Didn't look.

He already knew.

Second threat.

Ground-based.

A Rootmaw Crawler.

Heavy.

Low.

Slow—

But powerful.

Two enemies.

Different attack patterns.

Different ranges.

Pressure Returns

The Talonbeast dove again.

Kai moved—

Avoided.

But the Crawler surged forward immediately after.

Timing.

Coordinated by instinct.

Kai stepped back—

Then pivoted.

Avoided the ground lunge—

But forced upward positioning.

Exactly where the Talonbeast wanted him.

It dove—

Kai reacted late—

THUD.

Claws struck his upper arm.

Not deep.

But enough.

Adjustment

Kai exhaled sharply.

This wasn't random.

The pressure—

Layered.

He couldn't treat them separately.

He activated Hybrid Vision Deep Scan—

Just long enough.

Two patterns overlapped.

One forced movement.

The other punished it.

He turned it off.

New Approach

He didn't wait.

Didn't defend.

He attacked first.

The Crawler.

The slower one.

Kai rushed forward.

Closed distance quickly.

The Talonbeast dove—

But too late.

Kai struck the Crawler's exposed upper ridge.

CRACK.

It reacted violently.

Turning—

Creating obstruction.

Breaking Coordination

The Talonbeast pulled up.

Lost its angle.

Kai used that moment.

He moved around the Crawler—

Positioning it between himself and the aerial threat.

Now—

The dive paths were limited.

Controlled.

Ground Control

The Crawler lunged again.

Kai sidestepped—

Then struck again.

Same point.

Weakened.

CRACK.

Louder.

The creature staggered.

Aerial Interruption

The Talonbeast adapted.

It didn't dive.

It circled.

Waiting.

Kai didn't give it time.

He finished the Crawler.

Final strike—

Clean.

Direct.

It collapsed.

Immediate Transition

No pause.

Kai turned—

Just as the Talonbeast dove again.

This time—

He was ready.

He activated Hybrid Vision for a split second.

Perfect angle.

Perfect timing.

He stepped in—

Not away.

Blade rising—

SLASH.

Direct hit across its wing joint.

The creature shrieked.

Lost control.

Crashed.

Final Exchange

It tried to recover.

But slower now.

Unstable.

Kai closed distance.

Didn't hesitate.

Two strikes.

Precise.

Controlled.

The Talonbeast fell still.

Silence Again

The forest returned to stillness.

Kai stood there.

Breathing steady.

Arm stinging from the earlier hit.

But nothing serious.

Extraction

He moved to the Crawler first.

Crystal—

Dense.

Dull glow.

Then the Talonbeast.

Smaller.

Sharper energy.

He held both.

Beast Crystals Detected

Absorb?

YES / NO

YES.

Absorption

Energy flowed again.

Two different sensations.

Heavy—

Then sharp.

Both integrated quickly.

Kai exhaled slowly.

Over 1,000 RP now.

That mattered.

Final Moment

He didn't sit.

Didn't rest.

Just stood still for a moment—

Letting everything settle.

The fights.

The adjustments.

The pressure.

Then—

He looked deeper into the forest.

Still more ahead.

Still more unknown.

Kai adjusted his grip on the sword.

And moved forward.

Without hesitation.
