Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Price of Becoming

Silence fell.

Not the kind that brings peace—

But the kind that comes after something irreversible.

---

The Divine Guardian was gone.

Split cleanly in two.

Its massive body dissolved into fragments of golden light, scattering into the air like broken stars.

---

No one moved.

No one spoke.

---

Because what they had just witnessed—

Should not have been possible.

---

"…He… actually did it…" Rex muttered under his breath.

Even his usual confidence had cracks now.

---

Lyra stood frozen.

Her eyes locked onto Kael.

"…That power…"

It wasn't just strength.

It was something else.

Something that didn't belong.

---

Aurora's gaze was sharper than ever.

"…He crossed the threshold…"

---

At the center of the battlefield—

Kael stood alone.

---

The blade still in his hand.

---

Fully formed.

---

Dark-blue energy flowed across its surface, pulsing like a heartbeat.

The air around it distorted, unable to remain stable.

---

Kael's breathing was uneven.

Slow.

Heavy.

---

"…I did it…"

He whispered.

---

For the first time—

He wasn't chasing it.

---

He was holding it.

---

But—

Something felt wrong.

---

The blade pulsed again.

Stronger.

---

His grip tightened instinctively.

---

"…Why does it feel like this…?"

---

The voice answered.

Closer than ever.

---

"…Because you are not ready."

---

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…I told you already…"

---

"I'm not letting go."

---

The blade reacted instantly.

---

A violent surge of energy exploded from it.

---

BOOOOOOM

---

The ground beneath Kael shattered.

Cracks spread in every direction.

---

Lyra stepped back.

"…Kael…?"

---

Aurora's voice was calm—

But tense.

"…It's rejecting him."

---

Rex frowned.

"…Rejecting? Didn't he just use it?!"

---

Aurora shook her head slightly.

"…No…"

"…It's testing him."

---

Kael dropped to one knee.

---

"…Ghh—!"

---

Pain shot through his entire body.

Not physical.

Not exactly.

---

It felt like his existence was being torn apart.

---

"…What… is this…?!"

---

"…The price."

---

The voice echoed.

---

"…Every power has one."

---

Kael gritted his teeth.

---

"…Then I'll pay it…"

---

The blade pulsed again.

Stronger.

---

"…You already are."

---

Suddenly—

---

His vision shifted.

---

The battlefield disappeared.

---

Replaced by darkness.

Endless.

Cold.

Silent.

---

"…Again…?"

Kael stood in that space once more.

---

But this time—

It was different.

---

The blade wasn't far away.

---

It stood right in front of him.

---

Floating.

---

Massive.

---

Far larger than what he had held.

---

Its true form.

---

"…So this is you…"

Kael muttered.

---

"…This is what you see."

---

Kael stepped closer.

---

"…And you're telling me I'm not ready?"

---

"…You are not."

---

The blade pulsed.

---

"…You forced me into existence."

"…You dragged me out."

"…Without understanding."

---

Kael clenched his fists.

---

"…Then explain it."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

---

"…Why do you seek power?"

---

Kael froze.

---

"…What?"

---

"…Answer."

---

The space grew heavier.

---

Kael looked down.

---

Memories flashed.

---

His mother.

That night.

The god.

The destruction.

---

"…To protect."

He said.

---

"…To survive."

---

"…To kill gods."

---

Silence.

---

The blade didn't react.

---

"…Not enough."

---

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…What?"

---

"…That is not your truth."

---

The pressure increased.

---

"…Say it."

---

Kael clenched his fists tighter.

---

"…I already did—"

---

"LIAR."

---

The word echoed violently.

---

Everything shook.

---

Kael staggered.

---

"…Then what do you want me to say?!"

---

The blade pulsed.

---

"…The truth."

---

Silence.

---

Kael's breathing slowed.

---

Then—

He spoke.

---

"…I don't want to feel weak again."

---

The words came out quietly.

---

"…I don't want to lose anyone again."

---

His voice trembled slightly.

---

"…I don't want to stand there…"

"…and do nothing…"

---

The space fell silent.

---

The blade pulsed once.

---

Then—

---

"…Accepted."

---

Kael's eyes widened.

---

"…What?"

---

The blade moved.

---

Closer.

---

"…Then prove it."

---

Suddenly—

---

The space shattered.

---

Kael's eyes snapped open.

---

Back on the battlefield.

---

His body—

Burning.

---

The blade—

Still in his hand.

---

But now—

It felt different.

---

Lighter.

---

More responsive.

---

"…You changed…" Kael whispered.

---

"…No."

---

"…You did."

---

The ground trembled again.

---

The god was still there.

Watching.

---

"…So he passed…"

---

Kael stood up slowly.

---

His body still hurt.

Still broken.

---

But his presence—

Was different.

---

Stable.

---

Focused.

---

Dangerous.

---

"…Kael…" Lyra whispered.

---

He didn't turn.

---

"…I'm fine."

---

Rex smirked slightly.

"…You don't look fine."

---

Aurora watched carefully.

"…But he's in control."

---

Above them—

The god raised his hand again.

---

"…Interesting."

---

"But not enough."

---

Golden energy gathered once more.

---

But Orion stepped forward again.

---

"…That's enough for today."

---

The god looked at him.

---

"…You're stopping this?"

---

Orion didn't hesitate.

---

"Yes."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

---

The god lowered his hand.

---

"…Very well."

---

The light began to fade.

---

"…But next time…"

---

His gaze locked onto Kael.

---

"…You will not be spared."

---

And just like that—

---

He disappeared.

---

The pressure vanished.

---

The sky returned to normal.

---

Silence fell again.

---

The battlefield—

Was over.

---

Kael looked down at the blade.

---

It flickered slightly—

Then disappeared.

---

But this time—

He didn't panic.

---

Because he knew—

---

It would return.

---

When he called it.

---

Lyra rushed toward him.

"…Idiot…"

---

She stopped just in front of him.

---

"…Don't do that again."

---

Kael smiled faintly.

"…No promises."

---

Rex laughed.

"…Now that's more like it."

---

Aurora turned away.

"…This changes everything."

---

Orion stood in the distance.

Watching.

---

"…You took your first real step…"

He murmured.

---

Kael looked at the sky.

---

"…I'm not stopping here."

---

Because now—

---

He understood.

---

Power wasn't just taken.

---

It was earned.

---

And the price—

---

Was only beginning to show.
