Chapter 35 – The Formula of the Small Heavenly Cycle
The master's words surfaced in Yeong-woo's mind again.
"Do not force open the path of qi."
"If the mind knows the road first, qi will follow on its own."
As his breathing settled, the warmth in his dantian became clearer.
The master's teaching continued.
"Let your intention remain gentle."
"Do not grasp it, yet do not abandon it."
"Let it be like wind brushing over water."
Yeong-woo's awareness settled in the dantian.
"Qi is not yours."
"If you open the path, it will flow by itself."
The qi rising along his back grew softer.
"When it rises upward, do not push it."
"When it returns downward, do not hold it."
"One circuit is one breath."
His breathing lengthened.
The qi climbed up his spine, passed through his head, moved through his chest, and returned again to the dantian.
"When the mind is still, qi becomes round."
"Round qi does not break."
Deep within the dantian, a small Taiji slowly turned.
"Turn small."
"Only what turns small can endure long."
The Small Heavenly Cycle continued once more.
Fragments of the master's words surfaced.
When he had first learned them, their meaning had been difficult to understand.
Now his body understood.
These were the Twelve Essentials of the Small Heavenly Cycle.
一曰 靜心定意
First: Calm the mind and fix the intention.
Still the mind and gather the will into one point.
When scattered thoughts settle, qi does not disperse.
二曰 端身正骨
Second: Align the body and straighten the bones.
Keep the body upright and the skeletal frame straight.
When the spine is straight, the path of qi is straight.
三曰 鬆肩垂肘
Third: Relax the shoulders and drop the elbows.
Release tension in the shoulders and let the elbows fall naturally.
When the body relaxes, qi does not become blocked.
四曰 舌抵上顎
Fourth: Touch the tongue to the upper palate.
Place the tongue against the roof of the mouth.
The channels of Ren-mai (任脈)and Du-mai (督脈)connect.
五曰 意守丹田
Fifth: Let the intention rest in the dantian.
Keep the mind centered in the dantian.
Where the mind rests, qi gathers.
六曰 呼吸綿長
Sixth: Breathe long and gently.
Let the breath become long and even.
When breathing is soft, qi does not grow rough.
七曰 氣生於腹
Seventh: Qi is born in the abdomen.
Qi arises from the dantian.
When the root is preserved, the flow remains steady.
八曰 龍行脊柱
Eighth: The dragon travels along the spine.
Qi rises along the spinal column.
Like a small dragon climbing the vertebrae.
九曰 鳴響於頂
Ninth: A resonance appears at the crown.
When qi reaches the head, a resonance appears.
Like the sound of a bell clearing the mind.
十曰 潤下歸元
Tenth: Flow downward and return to the origin.
Qi descends and returns to the dantian.
One circuit becomes one breath.
十一曰 周流不息
Eleventh: Circulation without interruption.
Qi flows in a circle.
The path continues even without force.
十二曰 太極自生
Twelfth: Taiji is born by itself.
Within the dantian a small Taiji forms.
A tiny seed nourishes the qi of the entire body.
Inside Yeong-woo's body, qi flowed quietly.
One circuit.
Then another.
The master's formula was no longer mere words.
His body itself was following its meaning.
Qi moved quietly within his body.
One circuit.
Then another.
The flow continued without force.
The qi gathered in the dantian and found its own path.
Yeong-woo closed his eyes and slowly released a long breath.
As the breath settled, his mind settled with it.
His body had stood at the threshold of death.
Cut by blades, poisoned to the heart, his abdomen opened and sewn shut.
Yet within that body, qi flowed again.
Deep inside the dantian, a small Taiji slowly turned.
It felt as though a seed had taken root.
For now, it was small.
But once something takes root, it does not easily disappear
Yeong-woo said nothing.
He simply continued breathing.
The Small Heavenly Cycle continued to turn.
Quietly.
Without breaking.
