Chapter 39 - goodbyes

Chapter: Goodbyes and Goodnights

(Jay's POV)

The morning after was chaos.

But honestly?

When was it ever not?

I woke up in my old room, sunlight streaming through the windows, and for a moment I forgot where I was.

Then I remembered.

Keifer's arms around me last night.

The interrupted kisses.

Grazel's tiny voice exposing us.

I smiled.

Then I heard the shouting downstairs.

"CIN, IF YOU DON'T HURRY UP, I'M LEAVING WITHOUT YOU!"

Rakki's voice.

Loud.

Impatient.

"FIVE MINUTES!"

Cin's voice.

Equally loud.

Equally impatient.

"YOU SAID THAT TWENTY MINUTES AGO!"

"THAT WAS FOR SOMETHING ELSE!"

I sat up slowly.

Stretched.

Walked to the window.

The driveway was already chaos.

Cars everywhere.

People running around.

Grazel chasing a butterfly.

Denzel trying to catch her.

Grace yelling something about sunscreen.

Aries and Percy arguing about breakfast.

And in the middle of it all—

Serina and Kaizer, calm as always, watching the madness like it was a nature documentary.

I smiled.

This was my family now.

---

Downstairs – The Living Room

Everyone was gathered.

Cin and Rakki stood by the door, bags packed.

Cin looked at me.

"Jay."

"Yeah?"

He grinned.

"Don't be a stranger."

I crossed my arms.

"Where would I go?"

Rakki smirked.

"Fair point."

Cin pulled me into a hug.

"Take care of yourself."

I hugged back.

"You too."

He pulled away.

Looked at Keifer.

Nodded.

"Take care of her."

Keifer nodded.

"Always."

Rakki hugged me next.

"Call if you need anything."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Like what?"

She grinned.

"Like backup when these idiots get too annoying."

I laughed.

"Deal."

They walked out.

Cin's voice echoed one last time.

"ARIES! PERCY! BEHAVE!"

Aries shouted back.

"NEVER!"

Percy added.

"IMPOSSIBLE!"

The door closed.

Silence for exactly three seconds.

Then—

Denzel cleared his throat.

"Well."

He looked at Grace.

Grace looked at him.

Grazel looked at everyone.

"We should go too."

I blinked.

"Already?"

Denzel nodded.

"Work."

Grace sighed.

"Adult responsibilities."

Grazel tugged my sleeve.

"Smol come?"

I knelt down.

"Not today, baby."

She pouted.

"But Smol fun."

My heart melted.

"I'll visit soon. Promise."

"Pwomise?"

"Promise."

She hugged me.

Tight.

Then pointed at Keifer.

"Keif take care Smol."

Keifer crouched down.

"I will."

"Pwomise?"

"Promise."

She nodded seriously.

"Good."

Then she ran back to her parents.

Denzel grinned.

"She runs this family."

Grace nodded.

"And she knows it."

They hugged us both.

Then they were gone.

The house felt emptier already.

---

Outside – The Driveway

Serina and Kaizer stood by their car.

Elegant.

Composed.

Like they hadn't just survived days of chaos.

Serina pulled me into a hug.

"Sweetheart."

I hugged back.

"Mamma."

She pulled back and cupped my face.

"You take care of yourself."

"I will."

"And take care of my son."

I glanced at Keifer.

He was talking to Kaizer nearby.

"I will."

She smiled.

"Good."

Then she leaned closer.

Whispered.

"If he messes up again—"

"Mamma."

"—call me immediately."

I laughed.

"I will."

She kissed my forehead.

"That's my girl."

Kaizer approached next.

Patted my shoulder.

"Jay."

"Pappa."

He smiled.

Rare.

Warm.

"Welcome to the family. Officially."

I smiled back.

"Thank you."

He looked at Keifer.

"Son."

Keifer nodded.

"Dad."

"Don't mess this up."

Keifer sighed.

"Thanks for the confidence."

Kaizer smirked.

"Experience."

They hugged.

Brief.

Manly.

Then Serina grabbed Keifer for a hug.

"My boy."

"Mom."

"Be happy."

"I am."

"Good."

She pulled back.

Wiped a fake tear.

"I'm not crying."

Keifer raised an eyebrow.

"Sure."

"I'm not."

"Okay."

She got in the car.

Kaizer followed.

The engine started.

Serina rolled down the window.

"JAY!"

"Yes, Mamma?"

"MAKE HIM SUFFER A LITTLE!"

I burst out laughing.

Keifer groaned.

"MOM."

"FOR THE FIVE YEARS!"

The car pulled away.

Serina's laughter fading into the distance.

I turned to Keifer.

"She's my favorite."

He shook his head.

"Of course she is."

---

Back Inside – Aries and Percy

Aries was sprawled on the couch.

Percy was checking his reflection in a spoon.

Again.

I stared at him.

"Percy."

"Yeah?"

"Why do you have a spoon?"

He looked at it.

Then at me.

"Observation."

Aries snorted.

"Observing his own face."

Percy threw the spoon at him.

Aries dodged.

"Missed me!"

"Unfortunately."

I crossed my arms.

"So what are you two doing now?"

Aries stretched.

"Going to my room."

Percy nodded.

"Same."

I blinked.

"That's it?"

Aries shrugged.

"We live here, Jay."

Percy added.

"Angelo's house is basically our house now."

I frowned.

"Since when?"

Aries grinned.

"Since forever."

He stood up.

Stretched again.

"Gonna sleep for twelve hours."

Percy nodded.

"Same."

They walked toward the stairs.

Aries paused.

"Jay."

"Yeah?"

He grinned.

"Don't do anything I wouldn't do."

Percy added.

"Which is basically nothing."

"SHUT UP PERCY."

"YOU SHUT UP."

They disappeared upstairs.

Arguing.

As always.

The house fell silent.

Really silent.

Just me and Keifer.

---

The Drive to His Mansion

Keifer's car was ridiculously nice.

Of course it was.

I sat in the passenger seat, watching the familiar streets of our old city pass by.

Everything looked the same.

But everything felt different.

"You okay?" he asked.

"Yeah."

"Quiet."

"Thinking."

"About?"

I looked at him.

"About how we got here."

He glanced at me.

"Here?"

"Together."

He smiled softly.

"Long road."

"Very long."

"But worth it."

I nodded.

"Yeah."

"Worth it."

The car turned onto a familiar street.

My heart skipped.

I knew this street.

I knew this neighborhood.

I knew—

The car stopped.

In front of a massive gate.

Tall.

Modern.

Secure.

Keifer's mansion.

The one he lived in when he was in the Philippines.

The one I had visited—

I stopped that thought.

He looked at me.

"Ready?"

I nodded.

"Yeah."

The gates opened.

We drove through.

---

Inside – The Mansion

I had been here before.

Years ago.

When everything was complicated.

When we were fighting.

When we were—

I shook my head.

Keifer noticed.

"Memories?"

"Yeah."

"Good ones?"

I looked around the grand living room.

At the familiar furniture.

The familiar stairs.

The familiar everything.

"Both."

He walked to me.

Took my hands.

"We can go somewhere else."

"No."

I looked at him.

"This is your home."

"Our home."

I blinked.

"What?"

He smiled.

"If you want."

"If you want to stay here."

"With me."

My heart did that thing again.

The flip thing.

The thing he always caused.

"Keifer—"

"You don't have to decide now."

He squeezed my hands.

"But I want you to know."

"This is our home."

"Not just mine."

I stared at him.

At this man.

This ridiculous, stubborn, self-sacrificing idiot.

Who had loved me for six years.

Who had protected me for six years.

Who had waited for me for six years.

I pulled him down.

Kissed him.

Hard.

He stumbled slightly.

Then caught me.

Kissed me back.

When we finally pulled apart—

Breathless—

I whispered.

"Our home."

He grinned.

"Our home."

---

Later – His Room

His room was exactly the same.

Dark furniture.

Large windows.

That familiar scent.

I stood in the middle, looking around.

Keifer leaned against the doorframe.

Watching me.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You're staring."

"Admiring."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Admiring what?"

He walked toward me.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"You."

I rolled my eyes.

"Smooth."

"Learned from the best."

"Who?"

"You."

I laughed.

He stopped in front of me.

Close.

Too close.

Perfect.

"Jay."

"Yeah?"

"I'm really glad you're here."

I looked up at him.

"Me too."

He cupped my face.

Gentle.

Tender.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

He leaned down.

I closed my eyes.

His lips touched mine.

Soft.

Slow.

Perfect.

His arms wrapped around me.

Mine around his neck.

The kiss deepened.

Everything else disappeared.

Just him.

Just us.

Just this moment.

He walked me backward slowly.

Toward the bed.

My legs hit the edge.

We fell together.

Laughing.

Breathless.

He hovered above me.

Looking down.

Eyes full of everything.

"I've waited so long for this."

I touched his face.

"I know."

"Me too."

He kissed me again.

Hungrier now.

Desperate.

Like he couldn't get enough.

And honestly?

Neither could I.

His hand traced my side.

Mine tangled in his hair.

The world outside—

The chaos—

The family—

The past—

None of it mattered.

Only him.

Only us.

Only now.

He pulled back just enough to breathe.

"Jay."

"Yeah?"

"Are you sure?"

I looked into his eyes.

At the man who had protected me.

The man who had waited.

The man who had loved me through everything.

"I've never been more sure of anything."

He smiled.

That smile.

The one that made my heart explode.

"Good."

He leaned down again.

Closer.

So close I could feel his breath.

Then—

A knock on the door.

Loud.

Aggressive.

Persistent.

We froze.

"What the—" Keifer started.

Then a voice.

Percy's voice.

"OI! KEIF! JAY!"

I groaned.

"No."

"ANGELO SENT ME!"

Keifer buried his face in my shoulder.

"Why."

"HE SAYS DINNER TOMORROW! FAMILY DINNER! EVERYONE MUST COME!"

I screamed into the pillow.

"GO AWAY PERCY!"

"I CAN'T! ANGELO WILL KILL ME!"

Keifer lifted his head.

"THEN TELL HIM YES AND LEAVE!"

"OKAY BUT—"

"NOW PERCY!"

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Running.

Then—

"THIS CONVERSATION NEVER HAPPENED!"

More running.

Then silence.

Blessed silence.

I stared at the ceiling.

Keifer stared at the ceiling.

We lay there.

Completely still.

Then—

We burst out laughing.

Not quiet laughs.

Full laughs.

The kind that hurt your stomach.

"This—" I gasped.

"—is our—" he wheezed.

"—life now!"

We collapsed into each other.

Laughing.

Crying.

Holding on.

Because this—

This chaos.

This interruption.

This family.

Was ours.

And we wouldn't trade it for anything.

Keifer pulled me closer.

Kissed my forehead.

"Round two?"

I grinned.

"Round two."

He leaned down.

Our lips met again.

Soft.

Sweet.

Perfect.

And for the first time—

No interruptions.

No chaos.

No family.

Just us.

Finally.

Together.

Where we always belonged.

---

The Next Morning

Sunlight.

Warm.

Bright.

I woke up in Keifer's arms.

His chest rising and falling beneath my cheek.

His heartbeat steady.

Calm.

Home.

I smiled.

Then—

My phone buzzed.

Then his phone buzzed.

Then both phones buzzed repeatedly.

I groaned.

Reached for mine.

The screen lit up.

Group chat.

Angelo: DINNER TONIGHT 7PM EVERYONE MUST COME

Aries: BRINGING APPETITE

Percy: BRINGING DRAMA

Cin: BRINGING RAKKI

Rakki: I'm not an object

Cin: You're MY object

Rakki: ...I'll allow it

Denzel: Grazel says bring smol

Grace: We're all bringing smol apparently

Grazel: SMOOOOL!

Serina: Have fun children! Missing you!

Kaizer: Try not to burn the house down

Aries: NO PROMISES

Percy: DEFINITELY NO PROMISES

I stared at the screen.

Then at Keifer.

He stared at his screen.

Then at me.

We looked at each other.

Same thought.

Same realization.

Same—

"We're doomed."

He laughed.

Pulled me closer.

"Best kind of doomed."

I smiled.

"Yeah."

"Best kind."

Because this—

This chaos.

This family.

This love.

Was everything I never knew I needed.

And Mark Keifer Watson?

He was exactly where he belonged.

With me.

Forever.

No more running.

No more hiding.

Just us.

Just love.

Just—

Another buzz.

Percy: ALSO KEIF YOUR FACE WAS VERY RED LAST NIGHT WHEN I INTERRUPTED

Aries: WAIT WHAT

Cin: DETAILS

Rakki: NEED DETAILS

Denzel: Grazel is watching don't—

Grazel: KEIF KISS SMOL!

Grace: Oh no

Angelo: THE BABY KNOWS EVERYTHING

Serina: I'M SO PROUD OF THIS FAMILY

Kaizer: I'm not

I buried my face in Keifer's chest.

He laughed.

Kissed my head.

"Told you."

"Told me what?"

"This is our life now."

I peeked up at him.

Smiled.

"Good."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Good?"

I kissed him.

Quick.

Sweet.

"Yeah."

"Good."

Because chaos or not—

Interruptions or not—

Family or not—

He was mine.

And I was his.

Forever.

The end.

(For real this time.)
