Chapter 9 - Into the game world - chapter 9

The palace gardens had been a safe haven—soft sunlight, gentle breezes, and the quiet hum of mana flowing through the flowers and creatures.

But Ruby knew she couldn't linger in comfort forever. The otome world was far larger than the garden, and Angelica's life was controlled in more complex ways beyond this safe haven. Today, Ruby would venture farther—into areas where the System's control was tighter, the stakes higher, and the consequences of error more severe.

The silver-furred creature perched on her shoulder chirped softly. Ruby smiled faintly, patting its head.

"We'll stick together. Watch each other's backs."

She had grown to trust the magical animals more than ever—they were no longer just companions, but extensions of her awareness, guides through a world brimming with invisible dangers.

Shifting slightly, Ruby melted into a shadowy form, blending seamlessly with the dappled sunlight and darkened hedges. Her movements were silent, careful, and precise. The first barrier she encountered was a high wrought-iron fence, enchanted to deter intruders. Ruby paused, feeling the pulse of magic along the iron bars. It wasn't strong enough to harm her, but it could detect and alert the System to intrusions.

Focusing her mana, Ruby allowed her aura to flow outward, weaving through the enchantment like water slipping through cracks. The fence shimmered briefly, then settled as if she had never approached. She exhaled slowly. Even here, she could move unseen.

Beyond the fence lay a courtyard she had only glimpsed from afar before. Servants bustled, nobles passed with calculated steps, and in the center, a fountain glimmered under the sun. But Ruby's eyes were drawn elsewhere—toward a group of characters she recognized from her otome memories, minor nobles and attendants whose loyalty was uncertain. Some of them were kind, some cruel, and all were susceptible to manipulation by the System.

Ruby crouched behind a low stone wall, observing. Each movement, each conversation, each glance was dictated by invisible rules.

The System was pervasive here, controlling not only Angelica but the people around her, ensuring that everything adhered to its rigid design. But Ruby noticed subtle patterns—small deviations in timing, tiny hesitations that suggested some were more flexible than others.

Her pulse quickened. These were opportunities. Potential allies—or threats if mishandled. Ruby would need to test them carefully.

The creatures spread out, forming a silent network.

The silver one flitted near the fountain, the emerald perched on a balcony, and the gold-furred creature circled overhead. Ruby's mana flowed to them, coordinating their movements with her thoughts. Each creature could act as a messenger, observer, or shield, amplifying her influence without ever revealing her presence.

A noble girl approached the fountain, looking distressed as she clutched a stack of letters. Ruby focused her mana, nudging a nearby flower just enough to brush against the girl's foot.

She stumbled slightly, looking down, and a small smile crossed her face as if she had been guided by a gentle hand. The System would have expected her to frown, to scold herself—but Ruby's influence gave her a fleeting moment of relief.

Ruby grinned faintly. It worked. Small nudges, invisible to the System, but meaningful to those around Angelica.

She could guide emotions, choices, and perceptions subtly, shaping the world without exposing herself.

She shifted again, becoming a shadow that flitted across the courtyard. Her eyes fell on a young man, a male lead she had observed before, moving with his usual perfection. But today, he lingered near Angelica longer than protocol dictated, his expression conflicted. The System was forcing him to smile, to speak politely, but she could see the hesitation, the flicker of independent thought.

Ruby's pulse raced. This was the kind of crack she had hoped to find. She concentrated her mana, allowing it to ripple subtly around him. A leaf fell from a nearby tree, landing near his foot in a way that forced him to pause and adjust his steps. That tiny moment, almost imperceptible, allowed him a brief lapse from the System's control—a microsecond of choice.

The creatures chirped softly, acknowledging Ruby's success. She exhaled slowly, her chest tightening with excitement. Each small act reinforced her network of influence, building trust, confidence, and momentum.

Ruby's thoughts turned to Angelica.

The heroine had been forced to endure countless injustices, controlled in every gesture, word, and thought. The visions of the past had shown Ruby the patterns, the vulnerabilities, and the small acts of defiance the heroine had tried to make. Now, armed with that knowledge and her growing mastery of subtle intervention, Ruby could begin shaping events in the present.

A sudden commotion near the courtyard gate caught her attention.

Two servants had dropped a tray of food, and the clatter would have alerted the System to chaos—yet Ruby saw an opportunity. With a slight pulse of mana, she redirected the falling plates, preventing injury and allowing Angelica to step past without interruption. The heroine's eyes flickered with confusion and then relief, a small spark of genuine emotion piercing through the System's control.

Ruby felt her chest swell. She was learning, adapting, growing more skilled with each subtle act.

The creatures fluttered around her, eyes glowing with pride and trust. Together, they were a hidden force, moving unseen through a world designed to suppress choice.

As the sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the courtyard, Ruby crouched behind a fountain. Her mind raced with strategies, contingencies, and possibilities. She had learned to influence minor events, coordinate with the magical creatures, and remain completely undetected. The System could not read her mind—it could not anticipate her next move. And that gave her an unparalleled advantage.

Ruby's thoughts drifted to the vision she had seen earlier, the injustices Angelica had suffered, and the small victories she could now foster. She knew the path ahead was dangerous. Every step, every nudge, every act of guidance had to be precise. One mistake, and the System could sense an anomaly, potentially punishing Angelica or exposing Ruby.

But for the first time, Ruby felt not fear—but exhilaration. She was small, fragile, and young—but she had insight, power, and allies. She had the freedom to act where no one else could.

Her gaze lingered on Angelica, walking gracefully among the nobles, unaware of the invisible guardian observing her. Ruby's chest tightened with determination. She would protect her, guide her, and slowly dismantle the System's control—not through direct confrontation, but through patient, calculated influence.

The creatures chirped softly, tails flicking and wings fluttering in quiet celebration. Ruby allowed herself a small smile.

She had crossed into the heart of the otome world, tested her abilities, and begun shaping events.

The hidden guardian had stepped further into the game. And the game was about to change forever.
