Chapter 8 - When Hunters Become Prey

The Gathering

The cold wind howled across the shelter walls.

But today…

No one felt the cold.

Because today—

They were going to war.

A large crowd had gathered near the main iron gate. Survivors, engineers, wounded fighters, children—everyone stood there.

Watching.

Waiting.

At the center stood Adrich.

Still.

Calm.

Unshaken.

His presence alone silenced the crowd.

He stepped forward.

Then began calling names.

"Captain Arin."

A tall man stepped forward. His body radiated raw energy, a faint glow running across the blade strapped to his back.

"Captain Alice."

A woman moved out of the crowd—light on her feet, eyes sharp like a predator ready to strike.

"Captain Salvador."

A broad man, scarred, smiling as if pain meant nothing to him.

"Captain Kamada."

Quiet. Observant. Calculating. Her eyes missed nothing.

"Captain Almaira."

Graceful. Deadly. Her presence felt like silence before a storm.

One by one, they stepped forward.

All five stood before Adrich.

And then—

They bowed their heads.

Saluted.

Respect.

Absolute.

Adrich looked at them.

Then at the crowd.

His voice was calm.

But it carried weight.

"Today… we fight for them."

He pointed behind.

"For every person who couldn't fight."

"For every child who still believes tomorrow exists."

His eyes hardened.

"We don't just kill BrainDead."

"We stop extinction."

Silence.

Then—

The crowd erupted.

Cheers.

Shouts.

Hope.

Adrich raised his hand.

Silence returned instantly.

"We move."

The Child Who Doesn't Trust Promises

As the team turned—

A small hand grabbed Adrich's fingers.

He stopped.

Looked down.

Sam.

The same child.

Eyes filled with fear.

Tears already forming.

Adrich knelt immediately.

"What happened?"

"Why are you awake?"

Sam's lips trembled.

"First… my father left…"

His voice cracked.

"Will you leave me too?"

Time stopped.

For a moment—

Adrich didn't speak.

Sam's eyes filled with tears.

"My father said he would come back…"

"…but he didn't…"

Silence.

Adrich slowly raised his hand.

Placed it on Sam's head.

Gentle.

Protective.

"I'm not him."

His voice softened.

"I don't break promises."

Sam looked at him.

Still unsure.

Adrich wiped his tears with his thumb.

"I will come back."

"And until I do…"

"You stay strong."

A pause.

Then—

"I will always protect you."

Something changed in Sam's eyes.

Not fully trust.

But…

Hope.

Adrich stood.

And walked forward.

The Gate

A massive iron gate stood before them.

Beyond it—

Death.

The gate opened.

Slowly.

The sound echoed like a warning.

The team wore their masks.

Activated their systems.

The Thruster System

Each of them wore adaptive kinetic combat suits integrated with:

Magnetic-grip boots

Directional thrust stabilizers (micro-jet thrusters)

Powered by compact plasma-core cells

These thrusters allowed:

Vertical jumps up to 20–30 meters

Mid-air directional control

Shock absorption on landing

Burst acceleration for combat evasion

The system responded to neural signals, meaning—

They didn't control movement manually.

They thought it.

And the suit executed.

Entry into the Forest

The moment they crossed the gate—

They launched.

Feet ignited.

Air burst beneath them.

They leaped from tree to tree at insane speed.

Wind screamed past their ears.

Branches cracked beneath their weight.

Then—

They stopped.

First Wave

Below them—

A swarm.

Thousands.

Level-1 BrainDead.

Slow.

Unstable.

Hungry.

Adrich didn't move.

"Arin."

That's all he said.

Arin stepped forward.

His sword ignited.

A Mana Blade.

Pure energy condensed into a cutting edge.

He swung once.

A horizontal arc of glowing energy expanded—

Like a wave.

And then—

Silence.

Every BrainDead below…

Split.

Clean.

Instant.

Blood flooded the ground.

The smell of death rose instantly.

"Move."

Second Wave

They advanced.

Faster.

Sharper.

Then—

Something changed.

Movement.

Too fast.

Level-2 BrainDead.

Unlike Level-1—

They were agile.

Predatory.

They moved like animals.

Climbing trees.

Jumping.

Ambushing.

Alice stepped forward.

"Leave this to me."

Her body blurred.

Gone.

Then—

Reappeared.

Slash.

Disappear.

Reappear.

Each movement faster than the last.

Each strike precise.

Heads fell.

Bodies collapsed.

Before anyone could even track her movement—

It was over.

She stood still again.

As if nothing happened.

Third Wave

Then came the real problem.

Four figures stood ahead.

Level-3 BrainDead.

Their bodies—

Not flesh.

Something else.

Dense.

Hardened.

Like living armor.

Arin attacked.

His blade struck—

Nothing.

Alice attacked.

No effect.

Salvador charged—

Was thrown back.

Blood spilled.

Almaira's strikes—

Deflected.

Kamada's eyes narrowed.

"They're adapting."

Adrich stepped forward.

"Enough."

He raised his hand.

The air distorted.

Gravity warped.

A black sphere formed—

Small.

Dense.

A Black Hole Core.

He released it.

The moment it touched the ground—

Everything collapsed inward.

Space twisted.

The BrainDead were pulled—

Crushed—

Erased.

Nothing remained.

The Real Target

Silence.

Then—

They felt it.

A presence.

Heavy.

Watching.

Above them—

On a tree—

Something moved.

A figure.

Eating.

Tearing flesh.

Blood dripping from its mouth.

Then—

It looked at them.

And smiled.

"Wow…"

Its voice was wrong.

Distorted.

Like multiple creatures speaking through one throat.

"Humans…"

"…came to me…"

The team froze.

Because—

It spoke.

That wasn't possible.

Not before.

That meant—

Evolution.

Intelligence.

The worst-case scenario.

The creature dropped.

Landed.

The ground cracked beneath it.

Its body—

Covered in blood.

Muscles unnatural.

Eyes glowing.

Aura—

Overwhelming.

Fear spread.

Real fear.

The Fight Begins

Alice moved first.

Speed burst.

She struck—

Once.

Twice.

Ten times.

Nothing.

The creature didn't react.

It tilted its head.

"Tickles."

Arin attacked.

Energy slashes.

Impact.

Nothing.

Then—

It moved.

One punch.

CRACK.

Salvador's arm—

Gone.

Torn off instantly.

Blood exploded.

But—

Salvador laughed.

"Is that all?"

The creature paused.

Confused.

Then—

The arm grew back.

Regenerated.

Complete.

"Now…"

Salvador smiled.

"My turn."

Strategy — Kamada

Kamada closed her eyes.

Her ability activated.

Weakness Detection.

Patterns.

Flow.

Structure.

She opened her eyes.

"Head."

Just one word.

Final Attack

They moved together.

Perfect synchronization.

Alice—speed.

Arin—power.

Almaira—precision.

Salvador—distraction.

Adrich—

Execution.

The creature reacted.

Too late.

Five attacks.

One target.

The head.

It separated.

Clean.

The body fell.

Silence.

Heavy.

Unreal.

Aftermath

They stood there.

Covered in blood.

Breathing hard.

Alive.

Barely.

Then—

Adrich spoke.

"Mission complete."

Return

When they returned—

The shelter exploded with joy.

People cried.

Cheered.

Celebrated.

For one night—

They weren't survivors.

They were alive

Final Line

But far away…

In the darkness…

Something else was watching.

And this time—

It wasn't afraid of humans.

It was hunting them. 🔥
