There was no night.
The light held the same steady quality it had arrived with -- that sourceless late-afternoon warmth that wasn't warmth, that colour that had no sun to come from.
Amara's watch said 11:47 PM. The garden looked the way it looked. It didn't care what her watch said.
She sat with her back against the ember-copper tree and the fruit on the grass beside her and her phone in her hand for a long time before she called.
Two bars. Weak. Enough.
Third ring.
"Amara."
Her grandmother's voice. Exactly what it had always been -- low and unhurried.
The voice of someone who had been reading the same pages for sixty years and had found, somewhere in all that reading, a bedrock that didn't move.
Amara's chest did something complicated the moment she heard it.
"Hi, Grandma."
A beat. Then: "Where are you?"
"Underground. The Negev site. Forty-three metres down."
Silence. The particular silence of her grandmother receiving information and turning it over carefully, the way she turned pages.
Without rushing, because nothing was going anywhere.
"Grandma." Amara's voice came out steadier than she felt. "I need to tell you something."
"Then tell me."
"You were right."
She hadn't planned to start there. She'd had a whole sentence prepared -- something about the site, the formation, the GPR returns -- but none of it came.
Just that, You were right. Three words for fifteen years of not sitting still long enough, for the kitchen table in Accra and the texts spread across it and the fourteen-year-old who had somewhere else to be.
Three words for every time her grandmother had said something that Amara had filed under grandmother's stories and carried out the door.
She heard her grandmother exhale.
Not surprise. Not triumph. Just a deep and tired exhale. The sound of someone who has been holding their breath for a very long time and has finally, finally been given permission to let it go.
"Tell me," her grandmother said softly. "Tell me what you found."
So Amara told her.
Not everything. Not the words for it, she didn't have most of the words yet and the ones she had weren't the right size.
But she told her about the cavern. The grass. The six trees and the seventh. The Wall with its layers going back into the stone without end.
The light that had no source. The garden that had come back like a body remembering how to breathe.
Her grandmother said nothing while she talked. Amara could hear her breathing. Could picture her exactly -- the small sitting room in Accra, the shelves of texts in four languages, the lamp that had been in the corner since before Amara was born.
The woman her family called difficult and strange and a heretic too many times, who had spent decades reading things nobody else took seriously and talking about them to a granddaughter who had mostly been too impatient to listen.
When Amara stopped talking, her grandmother was quiet for a moment. Then she made a sound -- low and full, somewhere between a laugh and a sob -- the sound of someone receiving the thing they gave up expecting to receive.
"All my life," she said.
Her voice was different now. Thinner. Real in a way voices get when the composed version steps aside.
"All my life they told me I was reading stories. Old women's stories. They took the texts away from me twice. Did you know that? Your grandfather's family. They said I was filling your mother's head with nonsense and then they said I was filling yours." A breath.
"Sixty years I have been reading these pages. Sixty years."
"I know," Amara managed.
"You were the only one who ever listened. Even badly. Even running out the door."
Amara laughed, a broken thing that came out of her before she could stop it, and pressed her fingers to her eyes.
The garden glowed around her, patient and unhurried and sixty years in the making of this phone call.
"I'm sorry I ran out the door."
"You were fourteen," her grandmother said, and the warmth in it was enormous, the forgiveness in it so complete it landed almost like a physical thing. "You were supposed to run out the door."
They stayed on the line for a while after that. Not talking much. Just present on either end of it -- her grandmother in Accra with her lamp and her texts, Amara forty-three metres underground in a garden lit by a light with no sun.
The distance between them felt both impossible and completely manageable, the way distance feels when what matters is that the line is open.
Then her grandmother went quiet in a different way. Not the contemplating kind, The preparing kind. The kind that meant she had arrived at the thing she had been carrying toward since she picked up the phone.
"Amara."
"Yes."
"Have you seen him?"
The garden breathed around her. The sourceless light held steady. Near the Wall, a wildflower nodded in a wind that had no business existing forty-three metres below the Negev Desert and did not care.
The fruit sat on the grass beside her, cool and gold, its small white blossom perfect and impossible.
Him.
Her grandmother's him. Which could be the figure from the chamber below, the one who had sat up in the recess and taken her hand and carried her twenty feet through the air like the concept of gravity was something he had heard of but not adopted personally.
Or it could be the one the oldest texts described -- the one her grandmother had been reading about across sixty years of being called a madwoman by people who hadn't read what she'd read.
Or it could be God. Her grandmother was both archivist and believer and the word sat between all three meanings and refused to be pinned to any one of them.
Amara looked at the fruit.
"I--" she started.
She thought about the forty-five degrees. The almost-smile. The silver that had spread from the point where his hand took hers, cool and vast. The grass getting greener wherever he sat.
"I think," she said carefully, "I might need to call you back."
A pause. Then her grandmother made a sound.
It was not quite a laugh. It was not quite I told you so. It was something in between, something that had sixty years of weight in it with a kitchen table in Accra and a fourteen-year-old who had somewhere else to be.
And it was directed entirely at Amara, it was the most profoundly, specifically, perfectly irritating sound she had ever heard from anyone she loved this much.
"Goodnight, Amara."
"Goodnight, Grandma."
She hung up. She looked at the fruit. She looked at the garden. She looked at the fruit again, at the blossom that had no business being there, from the tree that had no business making fruit yet.
Given to her by the figure from the chamber below who had no business existing in any framework she'd ever been given.
The load-bearing walls were still standing.
She was going to leave them alone for the night.
