Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 – The Hidden Ally

The city had a way of hiding secrets in plain sight.

Alisha learned that quickly as the van sped through winding streets, tires splashing through puddles, the storm masking every sound.

"Where are we going?" she asked, her voice shaking.

"To a safe house," Enzo replied without looking at her. "Marco couldn't risk taking you back to the apartment at least not yet, it's too exposed."

Alisha swallowed hard, pressing the flash drive to her chest. Every mile felt heavier than the last. Whoever the fourth man was, he wasn't just fast—he anticipated their moves, their hesitation, their very thoughts.

Enzo's eyes flicked to her in the rearview mirror. "You need to focus. Keep your head clear."

"I'm trying," she said, though her voice betrayed the fear she couldn't hide.

Hours passed or maybe minutes, time blurred and yet very alley, every corner felt like a trap. The van finally slowed, turning into a narrow lane tucked between two crumbling buildings.

"This is it," Enzo said, cutting the engine. The silence was immediate, oppressive. "Stay quiet. And stay behind me."

Alisha followed closely as he led her inside the nondescript building. The door closed with a soft click. Inside, the room was sparsely furnished: a metal table, a few chairs and a single lamp casting a dim glow.

"You're safe—for now," Enzo said. "Sit."

Alisha sank into the chair, her hands trembling. She glanced at the door, half expecting the fourth man to burst through at any moment.

"You're shaking," Enzo said quietly. "Don't let him see weakness."

"I can't stop it," she admitted. "He's… he's unlike anyone I've ever faced."

Enzo nodded. "That's because he doesn't fight like a man. He fights like an idea. Always one step ahead, always predicting your next move."

A knock at the door made her jump. Enzo moved quickly, positioning himself between her and the entrance.

The door opened, revealing a woman, tall and confident, dressed in a sleek coat. Her dark hair fell perfectly over her shoulders and her eyes were sharp—calculating.

"You're Marco's ally?" Alisha asked cautiously.

The woman smiled faintly. "In a manner of speaking. Call me Selene."

Enzo's grip on his weapon relaxed slightly. "She's the one I told you about–the hidden ally. Trusted contact within the city's network.

Selene's gaze swept over Alisha. "You're the girl who has the flash drive?"

Alisha nodded. "Yes. Why?"

"Because," Selene said, stepping closer, "what you carry is more dangerous than you realize. And if it falls into the wrong hands…" Her voice trailed off, but the implication hung heavy in the air.

Alisha's stomach tightened. "I know. That's why I need to keep it safe."

Selene's eyes softened ever so slightly. "Good. Because keeping it safe won't be easy. The fourth man is not just a shadow—he's the storm. And he's already closer than you think."

Enzo exhaled sharply. "We need a plan. And we need it now."

Selene pulled a small map from her coat pocket, spreading it across the table. Streets, alleys, and buildings were marked with small symbols, each indicating surveillance points, escape routes, and safe zones.

"The city is a chessboard," Selene said. "And every piece moves according to the fourth man's strategy. He has informants everywhere—men who look like civilians, security cameras that aren't what they seem. To survive, we have to think like him. Predict him. Anticipate his next move before he makes it."

Alisha traced a trembling finger across the map. "And Marco? What is he doing while we're here?"

Selene's eyes darkened. "He's preparing. But he's also hunting. The fourth man underestimated him once, but Marco doesn't make that mistake twice. The next move will be decisive. And he'll need you ready."

Alisha swallowed. Ready. She didn't feel ready at least not for the danger lurking outside, not for the shadowed war she had been thrown into.

Enzo placed a hand on her shoulder. "You are ready. You survived ambushes, threats, and traps. You've kept the flash drive safe so far. That alone proves you're capable."

Selene nodded in agreement. "But capability is not enough. He's testing you, testing Marco, testing loyalty, courage and intelligence. One wrong step and the entire city could pay the price."

Alisha's pulse quickened. "Then what do we do?"

Selene tapped the map decisively. "We move. At night, when the storm is strongest. We use the shadows and we find the source of his surveillance before he finds us again."

Enzo added, "We also need to know who inside Marco's organization might be compromised. The fourth man doesn't work alone. He has eyes everywhere."

Alisha clenched the flash drive. "I won't let him take it. Not tonight. Not ever."

Selene's lips curved in a faint smile. "Good. Because determination is the first rule of survival. And you… have it."

The storm outside raged harder, rain lashing against the building's windows. The distant hum of the city felt like a heartbeat, relentless and unforgiving.

Alisha realized then that her life had changed forever. The streets she once walked confidently were now a battlefield. And she was not just a player—she was a key piece.

Selene leaned in, her voice low. "Rest if you can. Tomorrow, the fourth man will strike again. And when he does… you must be ready to move faster than fear itself."

Alisha closed her eyes, clutching the flash drive. Fear still lingered, but determination burned brighter. She was alive, for now. And that was only the beginning.
