Chapter 54: Celebration
The Marines advanced on the crowd, their weapons raised, their expressions confident. Captain Nezumi led the charge, his whiskered face split in a greasy grin. Behind him, two dozen soldiers fanned out, surrounding the villagers and the battered Straw Hat crew.
Nezumi's voice dripped with smug authority. "You pirates thought you could just waltz in here, defeat the local crime lord, and walk away? This is Marine territory. Everything here belongs to the World Government now." He gestured at the ruins of Arlong Park. "All this treasure, all these spoils, they're ours. And you're all under arrest."
The villagers murmured in fear. Some backed away. Others looked to the Straw Hats with desperate hope.
Luffy stood motionless, his expression still carrying that terrible calm from the fight. Nami's hand was in his, but she could feel the tension building in his grip.
Zoro pushed himself off the debris he'd been leaning against. His body screamed in protest, but he forced himself upright. "You've got to be kidding me."
Sanji stepped forward too, his legs still shaky from the fight with Kuroobi but his glare steady. "We just risked our lives to free this island, and you think you're going to waltz in and take credit?"
Usopp aimed his slingshot, though his hands trembled. "There's like... two dozen of them. We can take them, right? Right?"
Johnny and Yosaku moved to flank the crew, weapons ready despite their exhaustion.
Nezumi laughed, that irritating "chi chi chi" sound that made everyone's skin crawl. "You're all injured and exhausted. My men are fresh. You really want to do this?"
Nami stepped forward, her face twisted with fury. "You took money from Arlong for years, while our people suffered, you are a fucking disgrace of a marine!"
Nezumi's grin widened. "And I'll do it again. Because that's how the world works, little girl. The strong take from the weak. And right now, we're the strong."
Luffy let go of Nami's hand.
He walked forward slowly, each step deliberate. The Marines raised their weapons, but something in his advance made them hesitate. He wasn't running. Wasn't charging. Just walking.
Nezumi's confidence flickered. "Stop right there, pirate! I'll have my men open fire!"
Luffy kept walking.
"FIRE!" Nezumi screamed.
The Marines raised their rifles and pulled the triggers.
Luffy moved.
Not with rubber powers. Just pure speed. He was among them before the first bullet left a barrel. His fist connected with the nearest Marine's jaw, sending him flying into three of his comrades. They went down like dominoes.
A second Marine tried to swing his rifle like a club. Luffy caught it, ripped it from his hands, and broke it over the man's head.
Third Marine. Fourth. Fifth.
Luffy moved through them like a storm. No wasted motion. No unnecessary force. Just precise, devastating strikes that dropped each soldier where they stood. Some tried to run. He caught them. Some tried to hide behind their comrades. Didn't matter.
Zoro watched with something like admiration. "He's not even using his powers."
Sanji lit a cigarette, though his hands were shaking from exhaustion. "Doesn't need to. These guys are nothing compared to fish-men."
Usopp lowered his slingshot, watching in awe. "He's... he's destroying them."
Johnny whistled. "Captain's got a mean streak."
Yosaku nodded. "Remind me never to get on his bad side."
In less than two minutes, it was over.
Twenty-four Marines lay scattered across the ground, groaning and bleeding. Some unconscious. Some clutching broken limbs. All thoroughly defeated.
Nezumi stood alone, his rodent face pale with terror. He looked at his fallen men. At the approaching pirate. At the empty space between them that seemed to shrink with each passing second.
"You... you can't do this!" he stammered, backing away. "I'm a Marine captain! I have authority! The World Government will…"
Luffy grabbed him by the throat.
Nezumi's words cut off with a squeak. His feet dangled as Luffy lifted him effortlessly, bringing him close enough that their faces were inches apart.
The crew watched. The villagers watched. Even the fallen Marines watched, those who could still see.
Luffy's expression didn't change. That same terrifying emptiness. But his voice, when he spoke, was so quiet that only Nezumi could hear.
"You took her money. You made her suffer. You came here to steal her freedom again."
Nezumi's eyes bulged. He tried to speak, but Luffy's grip tightened.
"Here's what's going to happen. You're going to take your men and leave. You're going to take Arlong and his crew with you. You're going to report that pirates defeated the fish-men and that you arrived too late to do anything about it."
He pulled Nezumi closer.
"And if I ever see your face again. If I ever hear that you've bothered this island or anyone on it. I will xxx xxx xxxxx xx xxxxxx xxxx."
Nezumi's eyes went wide with absolute horror. His face drained of what little color it had. His whole body shook.
Luffy held him there for another long moment, letting the words sink in. Then he dropped him.
Nezumi collapsed to the ground, gasping for air. He scrambled backward on hands and knees, putting as much distance between himself and Luffy as possible.
"M-MEN!" he shrieked, his voice cracking. "Get up! We're leaving! NOW!"
The fallen Marines struggled to their feet, helping each other, limping and groaning. They gathered around their captain, who was still backing away, still staring at Luffy with that horrified expression.
Nezumi pointed at the ruins of Arlong Park. "Take... take the fish-men. All of them. Load them onto the ship. We're getting out of here!"
His men stumbled toward the debris, toward the unconscious forms of Arlong, Kuroobi, Chew, and Hachi. They dragged them toward the dock, toward the Marine ship still anchored nearby.
Nezumi himself kept backing away, not taking his eyes off Luffy until he reached the water's edge. Then he turned and fled, scrambling onto his ship with the grace of a terrified rat.
The villagers watched in stunned silence as the Marine vessel raised anchor and sailed away, carrying Arlong and his defeated crew into the horizon.
For a long moment, no one moved.
Then someone in the crowd cheered.
It started small, just one voice, then another, then a dozen. Within seconds, the entire village erupted. They screamed and shouted and cried with joy. They hugged each other. They danced. They fell to their knees and thanked whatever gods they believed in.
Eight years of terror. Eight years of oppression. Eight years of paying tribute to monsters.
Finally over.
Nami stood frozen, tears streaming down her face. She watched the Marine ship disappear. She looked at the ruins of Arlong Park. She looked at her village, her people, her home.
Then she looked at Luffy.
He had turned away from the sea, his back to the horizon. His face was still calm, but the emptiness was fading. He looked tired. Human again.
Nami ran.
She crossed the distance between them in seconds, throwing herself at him. Her arms wrapped around his neck. Her legs jumped up, wrapping around his waist. And she kissed him.
Not gently. Not softly. Deep and desperate and full of everything she'd held inside for eight years. Gratitude. Love. Hope. Freedom.
Luffy caught her easily, his arms supporting her, holding her close. He kissed her back, just as deeply, just as desperately.
The villagers cheered louder.
Behind them, the crew watched with a mix of amusement and something softer.
Johnny was the first to comment. "Well, would you look at that."
Yosaku grinned. "Captain's getting some action."
Usopp cupped his hands around his mouth. "Hey Luffy! You think you can wait until night at least? There are children present!"
Sanji laughed, despite his exhaustion. "The man just beat a fish-man to death with his bare hands and now he's making out in front of an entire village. Priorities, I guess."
Johnny elbowed Yosaku. "You think they'll make it to night?"
Yosaku shook his head solemnly. "Not a chance. Look at them. They're gonna find a closet somewhere in about five minutes."
Usopp nodded wisely. "The captain's been holding back for weeks. Weeks, gentlemen. That dam is about to break."
Sanji took a long drag of his cigarette. "Should we take bets? I say they don't make it past the nearest building."
Johnny pulled out a berry. "I'm in. Twenty berries says they disappear within the hour."
Yosaku matched it. "Same. Hour and a half."
Usopp considered. "Two hours. He's got stamina. We've seen it."
They all looked at Sanji.
He shrugged. "Half hour. Tops."
They shook on it, laughing.
Through it all, Zoro stood apart.
He watched Luffy and Nami, still tangled together, still kissing like the world had ended and they were the only two people left. He saw the way Luffy held her. The way she clung to him. The way they fit together.
And he felt it.
That ache. That familiar emptiness.
He thought of blue hair and sharp eyes. Of wooden swords clashing in a dojo. Of a voice that said "One of us is going to become the world's greatest swordsman."
Kuina.
He saw her face in his mind. Her smile. Her determination. The way she looked at him like he mattered.
'You would have liked this,' he thought. 'A crew that fights for each other. A captain worth following. A reason to keep going.'
His hand drifted to Wado Ichimonji, still at his hip. Her sword. Her spirit.
'I miss you,' he thought. 'I miss you every day.'
He watched Luffy and Nami finally separate, still holding each other, still grinning like idiots. He watched Johnny, Yosaku, Usopp, and Sanji cracking jokes and placing bets. He watched the villagers celebrating, their joy so pure it hurt to look at.
And he stood alone, carrying his memories like a second sword.
'But I'm still going,' he thought. 'For both of us. I'm still going.'
Luffy caught his eye over Nami's shoulder. For a moment, their gazes held. Luffy didn't smile. Didn't nod. But something passed between them. Understanding, maybe. Or acknowledgment.
Then Nami pulled his attention back, and the moment passed.
Zoro turned away, toward the sea, toward the horizon, toward whatever came next.
Behind him, the celebration continued. His crew laughed and joked and lived. And somewhere in his chest, Kuina's memory smiled.
