The city looked different at night. Lights shimmered across Aurelia City like thousands of tiny stars scattered across the earth. From the tall windows of the penthouse, everything below seemed distant and alive at the same time. I stood near the glass, holding a warm cup of tea Daniel had insisted on preparing before he left for the evening.
My day still felt slightly unreal.
The spa had been calm and luxurious in a way I had never experienced before. The staff had treated me with quiet professionalism, never asking unnecessary questions. Afterward, the stylist Daniel had arranged had guided me through a boutique filled with elegant clothes I would never have imagined wearing. Everything had been handled discreetly, just as Daniel promised. Yet despite the excitement of the day, my mind kept drifting back to one thought.
Sebastian.
He had been gone since the afternoon. The dinner he mentioned must have been important if it lasted this long. Almost as if the city heard my thoughts, the soft chime of the elevator echoed through the penthouse. I turned just as the doors slid open. Sebastian stepped inside. His jacket was slightly loosened, his tie relaxed, but the calm composure he always carried remained. When he saw me standing by the window, a faint smile touched his lips.
"You're still awake."
"I was waiting."
He walked further into the living room, setting his phone on the table beside the sofa.
"How was the dinner?" I asked.
"Predictable."
That answer made me laugh softly.
"Predictable how?"
"Too many people trying to impress each other."
"That sounds exhausting."
"It usually is."
He loosened his tie completely and sat down on the sofa, running a hand briefly through his hair. For the first time since meeting him, he looked slightly tired.
Not weak.
Just human.
"And you?" he asked after a moment. "How was your day in Aurelia City?"
I sat down across from him.
"Honestly?"
"I prefer honesty."
"It was overwhelming," I admitted.
"But?"
"But it was also amazing."
He leaned back slightly, watching me with interest.
"Daniel arranged a spa visit first. I think they used about twenty different oils and creams on me."
A small amused look appeared in his eyes.
"That sounds like Daniel."
"And then the shopping."
"That part worries me."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel has excellent taste."
I laughed again.
"You should be worried."
"Oh?"
"I think I may have left that boutique with half the store."
Sebastian shook his head slightly.
"Then I'll have to thank Daniel tomorrow."
The easy rhythm of our conversation felt strangely comforting. Like two people slowly learning how to exist in the same space.
"There was one moment today," I said quietly.
"What moment?"
"When I stepped outside the boutique."
"And?"
"I realized I was standing in the middle of Aurelia City. The same city I had only ever seen in pictures."
He didn't interrupt.
"I kept thinking about Willowbrook," I continued. "About the bookstore. About my grandmother making tea in the kitchen."
"Do you miss it already?"
"Yes."
His expression softened slightly.
"That's normal."
"But I don't regret coming."
The moment those words left my mouth, something in the room shifted. Sebastian held my gaze for a long moment.
"Good," he said quietly.
The silence that followed wasn't uncomfortable. If anything, it felt peaceful. After a while, Sebastian stood and walked toward the windows beside me. From here, the city lights stretched endlessly into the night.
"It's strange," he said softly.
"What is?"
"I used to stand here every night and think this view was everything."
"And now?"
"Now it just looks busy."
I smiled slightly.
"You really did need Willowbrook."
"I did."
"And now you're back."
"Yes."
"But you're different now."
He turned his head slightly.
"Different how?"
"You came back with someone."
For a moment he didn't answer.
Then he said something so quietly I almost didn't hear it.
"Yes. I did."
We both stood by the window, the lights of the city glowing beneath us. Suddenly, Sebastian stepped a little closer. Not close enough to make me uncomfortable. But close enough that I could feel the quiet warmth of his presence beside me. My heart began to beat a little faster. He studied my face for a moment, as if noticing something small. Then he lifted his hand gently and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
The touch was light.
Careful.
But the simple gesture made my breath catch. My heart skipped so suddenly that I was sure he could hear it. His gaze lingered on my face.
"There's something about your eyes," he said quietly.
I blinked in surprise.
"My eyes?"
"Yes."
"What about them?"
"They're calm," he said slowly. "Even when everything around you changes."
I wasn't sure what to say to that. So I simply looked at him.
And somehow the moment stretched longer than expected.
Finally he spoke again.
"Selena do you remember what I told you before you came here?"
"That you wouldn't rush me."
"Yes."
"And that I should only come if I truly wanted to see your world."
He nodded.
"That's still true."
His voice remained calm, but there was honesty behind it.
"I asked you to come because I like you," he said simply.
The directness of those words made my heart race again.
"I don't know where this will lead," he continued. "And I'm not asking for anything serious right now."
That honesty made the moment feel even more real.
"I just wanted the chance to know you better."
For a second, I felt shy under his gaze.
"That's also why I came," I admitted softly.
His eyebrows lifted slightly.
"You like my world?"
"No," I said, smiling faintly.
"I like you."
The quiet that followed felt warm rather than awkward. Eventually Sebastian stepped back slightly.
"It's late."
I nodded.
"It is."
As we walked toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms, the penthouse lights dimmed slightly, leaving the city glow filtering through the tall windows behind us. Before we parted ways, Sebastian paused. Then he leaned forward just slightly and placed a gentle kiss on my forehead.
The gesture was simple.
Unexpected.
But strangely comforting.
"Goodnight, Selena."
"Goodnight, Sebastian."
As I walked toward my room, my heart was still beating faster than usual.
Not because of the city.
Not because of the penthouse.
But because for the first time since meeting him I felt certain that whatever this was between us had truly begun.
