Chapter 20 - The Things You Notice Later

Crescent Avenue didn't feel as distant as it had the first time Selena stepped onto it. The quiet elegance was still there, the polished storefronts, the slow, assured movements of people who belonged, but this time, it didn't press against her. She walked beside Annelise without trying to match her pace or shrink into the background. That, more than anything, was what had changed. The last time she had been here, everything felt like a test she hadn't studied for. Now, she was simply present.

"You're not overthinking it this time," Annelise said, glancing at her briefly as they approached the boutique.

"I don't think I have the energy to," Selena replied, her tone light but honest.

"That helps more than you think."

They stepped inside together, and the shift in atmosphere was immediate cool air, muted lighting, soft music that felt more like a suggestion than a sound. A sales attendant approached Annelise with quiet recognition, greeting her with the kind of politeness reserved for someone known but not familiar enough for warmth. Selena noticed that too. There was acknowledgment, but no conversation. No curiosity. Just efficiency.

"I need something for a formal charity event," Annelise said, her voice even. "For her."

The attendant's eyes moved to Selena, assessing without lingering too long. "Of course."

The dresses came in carefully selected options—nothing excessive, nothing loud. Structured silhouettes, soft fabrics, clean lines. Selena moved through them more easily than she expected. The first few didn't sit right, but she didn't overthink it. She didn't ask for approval before stepping out, didn't wait for reassurance before turning toward the mirror. She just looked, adjusted, and moved on.

The fourth dress was different.

It was a deep midnight blue, almost black at first glance, but richer when the light caught it. The fabric fell smoothly, skimming her frame without clinging, with a subtle structure at the waist that gave it shape without making it feel restrictive. The neckline was simple—clean, slightly curved—leaving just enough space at her collarbone that it felt intentional, like it was waiting for something to complete it. The sleeves were fitted to the elbow before easing, and the back dipped just enough to be noticeable without being dramatic.

Selena stepped out and didn't say anything immediately. She didn't need to.

Annelise looked at her once, then nodded.

"That's the one."

Selena turned slightly, studying herself again. "It doesn't feel like I'm trying too hard."

"Exactly."

There was something about it that felt settled. Like she wasn't wearing the dress, the dress was simply fitting into place.

"I'll take it," Selena said.

"Good choice."

The voice came from the side, smooth and familiar enough to make Selena turn before she even fully registered it.

Althea.

This time, there was no hesitation in recognition. Selena remembered her immediately, the boutique, the tone, the way she had carried herself like she was always aware of more than she said.

Althea's gaze moved over the dress first, slow and deliberate, before lifting to Selena's face. "You wear it better than the last one."

Selena tilted her head slightly. "That sounds like a compliment."

"It is," Althea said, her lips curving faintly. "I don't give many."

Her eyes shifted, then just for a second toward Annelise. Not long enough to be obvious, but not quick enough to mean nothing. There was recognition there, but it didn't settle fully. It lingered in that uncertain space where memory tries to connect something it hasn't quite placed yet.

"You came alone the last time," Althea continued, her attention returning to Selena.

"I did."

"And now you didn't."

Selena didn't answer that immediately. She simply adjusted the fabric lightly at her wrist, her tone even when she finally spoke. "It seemed like a better idea."

Althea's smile didn't change, but something in her expression sharpened just slightly. "It usually is."

There was no direct question, no confrontation—but there was something else. Something measured. Like she was observing a pattern rather than trying to force one.

"Well," she added after a moment, stepping back just enough, "this one suits the kind of room you're walking into."

Selena met her gaze. "We'll see."

Althea held that for a second longer, then nodded once, as if that answer was enough for now. "We will."

And just like that, she let it go. No tension dragged out. No unnecessary words. She turned and walked away, leaving behind something quieter but far more unsettling than before. Selena didn't speak immediately after.

"She remembers you," she said eventually, her voice low.

Annelise didn't look at her. "She remembers enough to be curious."

"That didn't feel like curiosity."

"No," Annelise agreed. "It didn't."

That was all she said.

-

The drive back was calm, but Selena's thoughts weren't as loud as they used to be. She didn't try to analyze every word Althea had said. She didn't try to fit meaning into every glance. For once, she let the moment sit without pulling it apart.

When they got back, the penthouse felt exactly the same as always quiet, controlled, untouched by whatever the rest of the city was doing. Selena stepped inside first, setting the garment bag down carefully before slipping off her shoes.

Sebastian was already there.

Not working, or distracted, just present in the space like he had been waiting without needing to check the time. His gaze moved to her, then to the shopping bag, then back again.

"You found something."

Selena nodded. "Yeah. I think so."

"Show me."

There was no urgency in the way he said it, but there was interest clear and direct. She hesitated for a second, then picked up the dress and held it up slightly, enough for him to see the color, the cut, the simplicity of it.

His eyes took it in without rushing. When he looked back at her, there was a quiet certainty in his expression.

"It fits you."

"You haven't even seen it on."

"I don't need to."

Selena let out a small breath, something between amusement and disbelief. "That's a very confident answer."

"It's an accurate one."

That made her shake her head lightly, but she didn't argue. She set the dress aside again, turning back just as he stepped closer. Not abruptly, not carefully just naturally, like the distance between them wasn't something either of them had to think about anymore.

His hand lifted, brushing lightly against the back of her neck before she fully registered the movement. The touch was brief at first, just enough to make her still.

"Wait—" she started, but the word didn't carry far.

The clasp clicked softly.

Selena's fingers moved instinctively to her collarbone, touching the necklace before she even looked down. Diamonds. Not excessive, not heavy just a clean line that followed the curve of her neckline, catching the light in a way that felt deliberate rather than loud. She looked up at him slowly.

"This matches the dress."

"I thought it would."

"You didn't see it."

"No," he said simply. "But I know what you wouldn't pick."

She frowned slightly. "And what is that supposed to mean?"

"That you don't choose anything that tries too hard."

That landed more than she expected.

Selena looked back down at the necklace, then at him again. "So you chose something that doesn't."

"Exactly."

For a moment, neither of them said anything else.

Then she stepped closer.

Not because she had to.

Because she wanted to.

Her fingers brushed lightly against his sleeve, a small movement that didn't need explanation. He didn't pull away. If anything, his hand settled more firmly at her waist, steady, grounding, without holding too tight.

She looked up at him again, her breath quieter now.

"Thank you."

"You don't have to—"

"I know," she cut in softly. "I still mean it."

Something shifted in his expression, not dramatic, not obvious but there. He leaned in, and this time the kiss wasn't hesitant or testing. It was certain. Slow at first, just enough to feel the shape of it, before it deepened naturally, like neither of them was trying to control where it was going anymore.

Selena's fingers tightened slightly against him, her balance shifting without thinking as she leaned into it. He held her steady, his hand firm at her waist, not pulling her closer but not letting her drift away either.

When they finally pulled back, the space between them felt different again.

-

By the time the car stopped in front of the event hall, the city had fully come alive around them. Lights reflected off polished surfaces, people moved in quiet clusters, and the entrance ahead looked like something built for attention.

Selena stepped out, the dress settling perfectly, the necklace catching just enough light to feel intentional. She took one look at the building and let out a slow breath.

"This is a lot."

Sebastian stepped beside her, close enough that she didn't have to look to know he was there.

"It is."

She glanced at him briefly. "You say that like it doesn't bother you."

"It doesn't."

"That must be nice."

His hand found hers then, not sudden or hesitant just steady.

"You won't be alone in it."

Selena looked down at their hands for a second before nodding once.

That was enough.

She lifted her gaze back to the entrance, her shoulders settling slightly as she took a step forward.

And this time

she didn't
