Peter checked the upper floor carefully, room by room, but it was empty.
"Dr. Connors seems to have gotten into some trouble. Should we inform the police immediately?" Peter, having no idea what could have happened to him, was already leaning toward calling.
"I think calling the police is better. Oscorp might have filed a case against Dr. Connors for destroying the lab," Jack said with a guilty thought.
"No, doctor wasn't that kind of person. Maybe he got into some trouble. We should tell the police right away so they can find him." Peter then called the emergency line to report Dr. Connors missing.
"Ok, ok. Thanks." Peter finished the call and turned to Jack. "The police will arrive soon. I'm really sorry — I got you mixed up in this mess too."
Hearing that, Jack didn't say anything since he was also involved in this problem.
Soon, a police car stopped outside the doctor's house. Two officers stepped out, and Jack and Peter both froze when they recognized one of them.
"Hey, Jack Walker and… Park—" The female officer paused, trying to remember the name.
"It's Peter Parker, ma'am." Peter was just as surprised to see her. Only two days had passed since she'd seen him as Spider-Man.
"Yes, yes, Peter Parker. I forgot your name, but I remembered Jack's clearly. So you're the ones who called?" Both nodded and explained everything.
While Jean DeWolf checked the room, the other officer wrote down everything Peter and Jack said in his notes.
After checking everything, she looked at them and said, "Why is it that every time I see you two, you're mixed up in some kind of trouble?"
Neither of them had an answer for that.
"Alright. Stick to your studies and leave the detective work to us from here. I'll take this case and look into what happened at Oscorp's lab, too. You two can go."
"Ok, officer. We hope you find the doctor soon." After Peter said that, they walked away.
"Don't forget what I said," Jean DeWolf once again instructed them as they walked away
"What do you think about this one, John?" Jean asked her partner, who had been writing down notes and scanning for clues.
"No cameras, no clear evidence. Another headache case," he said.
"More and more crimes keep popping up this year, and now with vigilantes starting to emerge too — this city is gonna be chaos." John nodded at that.
"I hope the police find Dr. Connors soon," Peter said as they walked away from the doctor's house.
"Hope so." Jack was pretty sure the police finding any news about Dr. Connors — who was currently turning into a lizard man — was going to be very hard.
"Ok Jack, it's getting late. Let's just head home," Peter said.
That made Jack suspicious immediately.
Is this guy planning to search himself? Trying to send me off first?
"Are we not going to search for Dr. Connors?"
"No, no — didn't you hear what the officer said? We shouldn't do anything. Let's leave it to the police." Seeing Peter clearly didn't want him involved, Jack understood. Peter didn't want him getting into trouble. And since Jack wasn't ready to show his own hidden identity either, he didn't push it.
"Then I'll see you tomorrow at Gwen's place. You're coming, right?"
"Yeah, I will. See ya." Jack walked away from there
Good, he left. Now I can search for Dr. Connors. Peter quickly changed clothes — underneath his regular outfit he'd been wearing his Spider-Man suit the whole time. Moments later, Spider-Man swung out of the alley
Jack reached his hideout shortly after.
"Let's first create an antidote for Dr. Connors. He's a good person, and because of me that man is now even a suspect. If I have the power to save him, I should at least try."
"Little Red, pull up all the data related to the lizard serum. And try to track down Dr. Connors."
"Yes, Master."
"Ok, let's do it." Jack transformed into Greymatter.
"Let's see… mmm." After going through all the formulas and experiment details, he understood everything quickly.
"What a load of crap. For such a simple formula, they packed in so much unnecessary garbage just to make a simple thing look complex." Muttering to himself, he got to work and put together an antidote for the lizard serum's side effects.
"Ok, let's test this antidote. Good news — I still have that rat that changed from the lizard serum, or this would've been a nightmare to test." Jack undid his alien transformation and walked to the side of the lab, where the rat that he caught on Oscorp that had been transformed due to lizard serum was kept in a fully secured cage, mouth-bound and all.
The moment Jack walked over, it started writhing.
"Grrr—" But with its mouth bound tight, it couldn't even make a sound. It just thrashed uselessly against the cage.
"There, there. Don't stress. You'll be free soon." Jack injected the antidote and waited.
The rat spasmed, straining hard against its bindings — then, after a few minutes, it went still. The aggression faded. Its size and color slowly started returning to normal.
"Good. No problems with the formula. Let's make a clean version now."
After some more experiments, Jack created a side-effect-free version of the serum.
"Lizard serum… that name really doesn't fit anymore. Let's call it X Serum Version 1." He held it up and stared at it, weighing his options. Try it on himself first, or find someone else to test it?
"Let's try it myself." He was confident the formula was clean, and with the Omnitrix as backup, he didn't need to worry about DNA problems — it could fix whatever went wrong. His only real safety net was telling RedQueen to step in if something went critical.
He injected himself with X Serum Version 1, RedQueen monitoring his body condition in real time.
"Master, your heartbeat is rising above normal range."
Jack's body started sweating. Pain spread across him all at once — full body, no mercy. He gritted his teeth and tried to hold through it. Each minute felt like an hour.
After ten minutes, the pain finally started fading.
Jack breathed heavily, catching his breath. Then suddenly he felt like he could punch through a building — raw strength flooding through him all at once. He knew it was just the shock of the sudden boost hitting him, but it still felt unreal.
He pulled his shirt off and looked in the mirror.
Greek-god build. Six-pack. Sharp face, black hair. He looked like an actual model.
"Not bad at all. I wasn't exactly ugly before, but this is on a completely different level." He tried out a few moves that used to take real effort — now they felt effortless.
"That worked out better than I expected. Let's check the numbers." He moved to the training area in his hideout and ran through his stats — strength, agility, healing, everything.
"Raw strength is around Spider-Man's level. Healing is way higher, though." He didn't dare push the regeneration to its limit, but even at a glance, it was well above what Spider-Man's healing could do.
"Now I can fight even without the suit or the Omnitrix. Though I should keep improving my human body. Dying of old age despite having the Omnitrix would be a joke." "He then transformed into an alien form to check if anything had changed.
"Hmm. No change." He tested his limits in a few forms, but everything came back the same as before. He tried a few more aliens — still nothing different he could found.
On the other side of the city, Spider-Man was still out there searching for Dr. Connors.
