Chapter 16 - Artemis at last.

Artemis sat still, the letter in her hands heavy with unspoken words. She had read Abu Bakr's letter several times, each reading layering a deeper weight on her heart. The words, though comforting in their promise of return, felt like a slow, inevitable farewell. "The soul leaves the body that has never known anyone else," the letter said, and Artemis could feel the truth in it, the deep sorrow of separation. Abu Bakr had left, but his promise of return seemed as distant and uncertain as the horizon.

She glanced at the food she had prepared, but now it seemed meaningless, devoid of the joy she had once felt in making it. The vibrant colors and scents that had filled her thoughts earlier had faded into something dull and lifeless. The letter was not just a message from Abu Bakr, but a catalyst for something much deeper within her, a realization of loss and the fragility of the connections she had made.

As she sat in silence, the room around her seemed to close in, the familiar walls suddenly unfamiliar, as though they were witnessing her sadness from the outside. Artemis felt the weight of time pressing down on her, the understanding that everything, even the most comforting aspects of life, had an expiration. Nothing could stay untouched by time. The oceans would dry up, the skies would clear, and even the sun might vanish. The most poignant realization was that, like everything else, Abu Bakr too might fade into memory.

But amidst all that, a strange sense of acceptance settled into her heart. Artemis understood, even if it was painful, that some part of her happiness had not come from the promise of Abu Bakr's return, but from something more profound—something connected to the essence of life itself. It was not the letter, but the unspoken bond between them, the soul's connection to another, that had filled her with joy. And now, with the letter in her hands, she felt as though she had touched something eternal, something that would stay with her no matter the distance between them.

She closed her eyes, feeling the weight of both the letter and the promise it carried. "I will come back one day," Abu Bakr had said. Artemis whispered it aloud, trying to find solace in the words. Perhaps he would return, but until then, she would carry his spirit within her, in the spaces between each moment, in the silent places where the heart spoke louder than words.
