The clearing fell silent. Not the quiet calm of a peaceful morning. The sharp, dangerous silence that comes just before something breaks.
"Their Alpha is with them."
The scout's words hung in the air like a blade.
For a moment no one moved. Then the entire pack reacted at once. Wolves straightened.
Voices rose. Several shifted immediately into wolf form, instincts already pushing them toward the northern border.
Rowan didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.
"Stop."
The single word cut through the chaos like thunder. Every wolf froze. The authority in Rowan's voice was absolute.
No hesitation. No argument. Slowly, the pack turned toward him.
Rowan stepped forward into the center of the clearing, his presence filling the space with quiet power.
"Positions," he said calmly.
That was all. The command moved through the wolves like a current.
Within seconds the pack began organizing. Scouts moved toward the outer forest. Fighters gathered near the northern trail. Others remained behind, protecting the settlement.
This was the first time I had seen Rowan fully as an Alpha. Not the quiet stranger I had met in the forest. Not the calm guide who had walked beside me through the borderlands.
This was something different. Controlled. Strategic. Dangerous. And at that moment, he seemed a little charismatic.
The tall wolf approached him.
"They crossed the ridge?"
"Yes," the scout replied.
"How far?"
"Less than fifteen minutes."
The braided woman muttered under her breath.
"That's bold."
Rowan nodded slightly.
"Yes."
"Do you want us ready for combat?" the tall wolf asked.
Rowan's gaze remained fixed on the northern forest.
"Not yet."
The wolf frowned.
"They brought their Alpha."
"Yes."
"That's not a scouting party anymore."
"No."
A brief silence followed. Then Rowan said something that surprised everyone.
"I'll speak with him."
Several wolves reacted immediately.
"That's risky."
"He could be baiting you."
"What if they attack?"
Rowan raised a hand. The clearing fell silent again.
"If Kael Blackthorn wanted war," Rowan said calmly, "he wouldn't arrive with ten wolves."
That was true. Pack wars required dozens. Sometimes hundreds. This was something else.
A message. A challenge. Or a negotiation.
Rowan turned toward the northern trail.
"Prepare the border line."
The tall wolf nodded.
"Yes, Alpha."
Then Rowan looked at me.
"Elara."
My stomach tightened.
"Yes?"
"Stay here."
I crossed my arms.
"No."
Several wolves nearby stared at me.
Rowan's expression didn't change.
"This is not your fight."
"It became my fight the moment his scouts started looking for me."
Rowan stepped closer. His voice lowered slightly.
"This is between Alphas."
"No," I said quietly.
"It's about me."
The words settled heavily between us. Because we both knew they were true.
Kael hadn't come for Rowan's territory.
He had come for the wolf who had disappeared from his pack.
Me.
Rowan studied my face for several seconds. Then he sighed faintly.
"You're stubborn."
"So I've been told."
His mouth twitched slightly. Then he turned toward the northern forest again.
"Fine."
The tall wolf immediately objected.
"Alpha—"
"She stays behind me," Rowan said calmly.
That ended the argument. The wolves parted as Rowan began walking toward the northern trail.
I followed.
Behind us, several pack fighters moved into position along the forest edge.
The settlement grew quiet. Watching. Waiting..
The forest ahead seemed darker somehow. The air carried the faint scent of unfamiliar wolves.
Blackthorn wolves. My former pack. My chest tightened slightly. Memories surfaced without permission. Training grounds. Pack dinners. Night patrols.
Kael standing at the center of it all.
My feelings for Kael were completely shattered. Was I respecting and loving him because he was an Alpha, or did I truly have feelings for him? Or were my emotions simply devastated by the weight of rejection?
My confusion seemed to be a result of my attempts to make sense of what was happening now.
Rowan stopped walking.
The northern border lay ahead. A line of massive stones marked the edge of his territory. The same kind of border markers I had crossed two nights ago.
Only now I stood on the opposite side. Waiting.
Several of Rowan's wolves were already positioned nearby. Silent and ready for Rowan's commands.
The forest beyond the stones remained still. Then my wolf stirred sharply. They were close. I could feel it.
Seconds later, shapes began to appear between the trees. Dark figures moving through the forest.
One. Two. Five. Ten..
Blackthorn wolves stepped into view. They stopped several meters beyond the border stones. None of them crossed. Not yet.
For a moment both packs simply stared at each other.
Two territories.
Two Alphas.
Two worlds colliding in the quiet forest.
My pulse quickened. Then a figure stepped forward from the Blackthorn wolves.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair catching the pale morning light.
My breath caught. Because I would recognize that presence anywhere.
Kael Blackthorn.
He stopped just beyond the border. His gaze moved slowly across Rowan's wolves.
Then it found me. The world seemed to narrow to a single point.
His expression changed. Not anger. Not surprise. Something deeper. Something dangerous.
Rowan stepped forward beside me. The two Alphas now faced each other across the border stones.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then Kael's voice broke the silence.
Low. Controlled. He displayed behavior expected of an alpha.
"I believe," he said slowly, "one of my wolves is standing on your territory."
My heart pounded.
Because suddenly it felt like the entire forest was holding its breath.
And the next words spoken between these two Alphas could change everything.
