Chapter 19 - The First Fracture

The silence did not fade after the guardian disappeared. It settled instead, heavier than before, pressing against the air, their thoughts, and something deeper none of them could fully understand.

Creighton stood still, his eyes fixed on the place where the guardian had been. For the first time since entering the forest, he had nothing to say, and that alone made the moment feel wrong.

"We're leaving," Sharma said firmly.

There was no hesitation in his voice this time.

Creighton nodded immediately. "Yeah. No argument."

Yun didn't move.

Sharma turned toward him. "Yun."

Yun's gaze remained forward, unfocused yet strangely fixed.

"Not yet."

Creighton exhaled sharply. "You're joking."

"I'm not."

His voice was calm, but not in a reassuring way. It was the kind of calm that made things worse.

Sharma stepped closer. "You heard what he said. This place isn't just dangerous, it's unstable."

Yun finally turned slightly. "That's exactly why I need to stay."

Creighton stared at him. "That's not logic. That's how people die."

Yun didn't respond, because something inside him was no longer still. It was pulling him, not outward, but downward.

Then it came.

A sound.

Low. Deep.

Not just heard, but felt.

The ground trembled beneath them.

Creighton stepped back instinctively. "That's not normal."

Sharma's eyes sharpened. "It's coming from below."

Yun didn't speak.

He already knew.

The river.

They moved without needing to say it, as if something was drawing them toward it.

The closer they got, the heavier the air became. The silence deepened, and something about the space itself felt wrong, as if reality was shifting just beyond reach.

The river was no longer still. It moved, slowly at first, then with intention.

Creighton stopped at the edge. "That's not water."

Sharma replied quietly, "It never was."

Yun stepped forward, and the moment he did, something inside his chest responded. It wasn't violent, but it was clear.

Alive.

The surface of the river twisted, then split, not with force, but with purpose.

Something was rising.

It wasn't Mirka.

This presence was different. Heavier. More unstable. Less defined.

The water bent around it, as if rejecting it while still allowing it to exist.

A shape formed, incomplete and shifting, unable to settle into a single form.

Creighton lowered his voice. "What is that?"

Sharma didn't answer. His stance had already changed, energy gathering beneath him, controlled and ready.

Yun stepped closer.

Closer than he should have.

"Yun, stop," Sharma said.

But Yun didn't.

The thing moved.

It didn't attack.

It aligned with him.

And suddenly, Yun felt it.

Recognition.

His breathing slowed.

"It's the same…"

Not Mirka.

Not the serpent.

Something deeper.

The shape shifted again, and for a brief moment, something like an arm formed, unstable, incomplete, reaching without fully existing.

Sharma moved instantly, closing the distance in a blur and striking.

The attack passed straight through.

His eyes narrowed slightly. "It's not physical."

The thing moved again.

Not forward.

Not backward.

Through.

The space between them distorted, bending unnaturally, and in the next moment, it was closer.

Too close.

"Yun, move!" Creighton shouted.

But Yun didn't move.

Because something inside him stopped him.

The shape extended, its incomplete arm reaching toward his chest.

The moment it touched him, everything changed.

The pulse inside him surged violently. It wasn't pain, but overwhelming pressure.

His vision fractured. His body locked. His breath stopped.

Then something inside him responded.

The energy surged.

For the first time, it did not remain contained.

It burst out.

Water rose.

Fire followed.

Both at once.

Creighton staggered back. "What is that?"

The energy spiraled around Yun, clashing and merging as if two opposing forces were fighting for dominance within him.

Then it took shape.

A dragon.

Not complete.

Not stable.

But real.

Water and fire coiled together around his body, forming a single massive presence that rose violently into the air.

The ground beneath him cracked. The air distorted.

Sharma froze. "So that's his power…"

But something was wrong.

The energy was unstable. It was tearing itself apart.

Yun's breathing became uneven. His body trembled under the strain.

"It's too much…"

The dragon flickered, its form collapsing and reforming in unstable bursts.

The thing in the river did not retreat.

It leaned closer.

Watching.

Studying.

Then a thought pressed into Yun's mind.

Break.

His eyes widened. "No."

The energy surged again, more violently.

Cracks spread beneath his feet as the dragon twisted uncontrollably.

Sharma moved instantly and struck Yun hard across the shoulder.

The flow broke.

The energy collapsed.

The dragon shattered.

Water fell.

Fire vanished.

Silence returned.

Yun dropped to one knee, breathing heavily.

The thing in the river stopped.

Then slowly, it sank back into the depths.

As if it had seen enough.

As if it had learned.

The river became still again, but it no longer felt the same.

Creighton exhaled sharply. "That's it. We're leaving. Now."

Sharma didn't argue. "Agreed."

He looked at Yun. "You almost lost control."

Yun didn't respond immediately. His hand rested over his chest.

The pulse was back.

Stronger.

Clearer.

"It wasn't attacking me," he said quietly.

Sharma frowned. "Then what was it doing?"

Yun looked at the river. "It was testing me."

Silence followed.

Creighton shook his head slowly. "That's worse."

No one disagreed.

Then, after a moment, Creighton looked at Yun again.

"What was that power around you?"

Yun remained silent for a moment before answering. "An unstable power."

It wasn't a full explanation.

But it wasn't a denial either.

Slowly, Yun pulled at his shirt near his chest.

A faint light appeared.

A star.

At the center of his chest.

It pulsed.

Calm.

But unmistakable.

Creighton froze. "What is that?"

Yun didn't explain.

He simply looked at Sharma.

That was enough.

Sharma exhaled slowly, then brushed his hair back.

Another light appeared.

A star.

Centered on his forehead.

Hidden before.

But real.

"I have it too," he said calmly.

Silence filled the space again, heavier than before.

Creighton looked between them, then let out a faint, almost strange smile.

"I thought I was the only one."

Yun's expression shifted slightly. "What do you mean?"

Creighton raised his hand slowly.

There was no clear light like theirs.

But something was there.

Something heavier.

Denser.

Different.

"I have a power too," he said.

Then added, "The star I carry… is the Meteor Star."

The air changed instantly.

Yun stepped forward. "You… were you the one who released Lucius from the sea?"

Creighton didn't answer right away.

He looked toward the river.

Then spoke quietly.

"I don't know."

He paused.

Then added, "But whatever came out back then… feels like what we just saw."

Silence deepened.

"Maybe it's the same thing the guardian was talking about."

The river shifted slightly.

Subtle.

But real.

As if something deep below had heard them.

Because the truth had begun to surface.

But none of them realized yet…

They weren't three individuals discovering power.

They were three fragments…

of something far greater.
