Rebecca pulled out her phone and, after searching for a few seconds, showed her a photo.
"This is him. Does he look familiar, have you seen him around here?... I don't need much, I just want to know he's okay."
Mary looked down at the screen and felt her entire world crumble apart.
In the photo was Mark, smiling at the camera with an arm around Rebecca as she planted a tender kiss on his cheek.
Within seconds, a thousand different scenarios crashed through Mary's mind, and every single one ended the same way.
Rebecca would go in, wake Mark up, and he, sober and clear-headed for the first time in days, would fall right back into her arms. They'd get back together.
And Mary would go back to being what she'd always been.
The girl no one looked at, the one who had dared to dream, for a single night, that someone could love her, only for the world to snatch it away the very next morning in the cruelest way possible.
Because that was how her life worked. Always.
