Chapter 25 - Chapter 24 - Echoes Beneath the Arena

The roar of the crowd still echoed through the stone corridors beneath the academy arena.

Raizen walked slowly along the dim hallway, the sounds of the tournament fading behind him. The air down here felt different—cooler, quieter, heavier somehow. The polished floors reflected the faint glow of lanterns hanging along the walls.

Above him, the academy grounds of Kumogakure vibrated with excitement.

But down here…

It felt like a place where the noise of the world couldn't reach.

Raizen exhaled slowly.

His match from earlier still replayed in his mind.

Every movement.

Every strike.

Every mistake.

My footing shifted too early…

He flexed his fingers slightly.

And my timing on that counter was half a beat late.

Most students would be celebrating a victory like his.

Raizen treated it like a lesson.

Footsteps approached behind him.

"Still thinking about the fight?"

Raizen turned.

Akari Mizuta leaned casually against the wall, arms folded, watching him with her usual sharp expression.

Her brother followed a few steps behind.

Daigo Mizuta grinned.

"You realize you won, right?"

Raizen shrugged.

"Winning isn't the point."

Daigo snorted.

"That sounds like something someone says after losing."

Akari rolled her eyes.

"He means improvement."

Raizen nodded.

"There were three openings I shouldn't have left."

Daigo laughed.

"Only three?"

Before Raizen could respond, a loud cheer erupted from the arena above.

Another match had begun.

The tournament was far from over.

The Thunder Ranking Board

They climbed the stairs back toward the main hall.

The noise grew louder with each step.

When they entered the academy's central atrium, the massive board dominating the wall immediately drew their attention.

The Thunder Ranking Board.

Students crowded around it, arguing, pointing, and whispering excitedly.

New rankings had already been posted.

Raizen scanned the board quietly.

Names shifted constantly as tournament victories were recorded.

Near the top of the academy's current rankings were the familiar names of the elite class leaders.

And just below them…

Several names had begun rising quickly.

One of them stood out.

Tetsuo Kurogane

Daigo whistled.

"That sword freak is climbing fast."

Raizen had watched Tetsuo's match earlier.

It had been… impressive.

Not flashy.

Not dramatic.

Just precise.

Every step placed perfectly.

Every strike measured.

It reminded Raizen of old sword masters he couldn't quite remember from his past life.

Muscle memory stirred faintly inside him.

Akari noticed the way Raizen was staring at the board.

"You want to fight him."

It wasn't a question.

Raizen didn't answer immediately.

Finally he nodded once.

"Yes."

Daigo grinned wider.

"Good."

He cracked his knuckles.

"Because he wants to fight you too."

The Blade Savant

Later that afternoon the arena filled again.

Students packed the stands, eager for the next round of matches.

Instructor Raizen recognized stood near the arena floor, watching carefully.

Among them were several elite instructors of the academy—shinobi who had trained generations of Kumogakure warriors.

This tournament wasn't just for students.

It was a proving ground.

The announcer's voice echoed across the arena.

"Next match!"

"Tetsuo Kurogane!"

A tall boy stepped into the arena.

Dark hair tied loosely behind his head.

A wooden practice sword rested calmly in his hand.

Across from him stood another student armed with a spear.

The match began.

The spear user attacked first.

Fast.

Aggressive.

The weapon cut through the air in a sharp arc.

Tetsuo moved.

One step.

Just one.

The spear missed by inches.

Before the attacker could recover—

CRACK

Tetsuo's wooden blade struck the shaft of the spear, redirecting it.

Another movement. Too fast to follow—yet perfectly controlled.

The tip of his sword stopped at the opponent's throat.

Silence fell over the arena.

The match had ended in less than five seconds.

Students erupted into shocked whispers.

Raizen's eyes narrowed slightly.

That wasn't raw speed.

It was timing.

Perfect timing.

Next to him, Akari murmured quietly.

"He predicted the attack."

Raizen nodded.

"Yes."

Daigo leaned forward excitedly.

"Now that's a fight I want to see."

As if sensing their attention, Tetsuo slowly lifted his gaze toward the stands.

His eyes met Raizen's.

For a moment the noise of the arena faded.

No words were spoken.

But the message was clear.

The blade savant had found the opponent he wanted.

Beneath the Academy

Later that evening, long after the arena had emptied, Raizen found himself walking alone again.

Not toward the dorms.

Toward the lower levels of the academy.

Toward the archives.

The Storm Archives were normally restricted.

Only elite class leaders had access.

But Raizen's instructor had made an exception.

Potential, he had said.

Raizen still wasn't sure what he had seen.

The heavy doors opened quietly.

Rows of ancient scrolls stretched across the dimly lit chamber.

Raizen moved slowly between the shelves.

His fingers brushed lightly across the worn spines of scrolls containing decades—sometimes centuries—of knowledge.

He stopped at a familiar section.

Storm Release theory.

His heart beat slightly faster.

Carefully, he removed a scroll.

This one was different.

Older than most academy records. A research document archived under restricted classification.

At the bottom of the page…

a familiar name was recorded among the contributors.

Arashi Tenrai.

Raizen sat quietly at one of the low tables.

He opened the research document slowly.

The pages contained fragmented notes and incomplete diagrams.

Lightning and wind interactions… unstable but powerful.

Further down, a separate section proposed something more complex.

A theoretical expansion:

Lightning.

Wind.

Water.

Not a completed system—

just an idea left unfinished.

Lightning.

Wind.

And Water.

Three elements.

Raizen stared at the diagram.

His father had never completed the theory.

But the foundation was there.

The beginnings of something far more powerful than traditional Storm Release.

Raizen slowly closed the journal.

Outside the archive windows, thunder rolled softly across the distant mountains surrounding Kumogakure.

A storm was gathering.

And somewhere in the academy above, rivalries were forming.

The tournament had only just begun.

Raizen Tenrai was only beginning to understand the storm his father had tried to create.
