Chapter 65 - Chapter 63 — Trial of Strength

The academy training grounds carved into the cliffs of Kumogakure had been transformed overnight.

Stone rings marked sparring arenas.

Instructor platforms overlooked the field.

Students gathered along the outer railings.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because today—

Was evaluation.

The First Phase

Instructor Takeshi Aran stood at the central platform.

"The first phase of the Leadership Trials evaluates combat capability."

His voice carried across the field.

"These are not tournament matches."

"Victory matters."

A pause.

"But how you fight matters more."

Students exchanged looks.

Because that meant everything was being judged.

Movement.

Control.

Decision-making.

Adaptability.

Aran gestured toward the first ring.

"Begin."

Early Matches

The first matches were rough.

Fast.

Imperfect.

One student rushed in—

Overcommitted—

Lost instantly.

Another used clever feints—

But couldn't finish.

Several matches ended quickly.

Others dragged.

Instructors wrote quietly.

No reactions.

Only evaluation.

Akari's Match

"Akari Mizuta."

She stepped into the ring calmly.

Across from her—

Roku Tanabe.

Broad.

Confident.

He smirked.

"You bringing a bow into a sparring match?"

Akari shrugged.

"Maybe."

He charged.

Direct.

Aggressive.

Akari didn't move—

Until the last second.

She pivoted.

Rolled.

Came up inside his guard.

Her bow snapped forward—

Not a shot.

A strike.

The reinforced frame slammed into his shoulder.

Roku staggered.

Before he recovered—

Her leg swept his base.

He hit the ground hard.

"Point."

Instructor Aran didn't hesitate.

The crowd murmured.

Akari stepped out calmly.

Daigo grinned.

"That was smooth."

Akari shrugged.

"Efficient."

Inside Raizen's mind, Astra logged:

"Combat archetype update: Akari Mizuta — ranged control with close-range adaptability."

The Shadow Specialist

"Rei Kisaragi."

The air shifted slightly.

Rei stepped into the ring.

His opponent—

A fast taijutsu student.

The match began—

And immediately felt off.

Rei didn't overpower.

Didn't rush.

He moved through angles.

Blind spots.

Timing gaps.

His opponent turned—

Too slow.

Adjusted—

Too late.

Within seconds—

He stumbled.

Rei's hand stopped at his throat.

"Match."

Silence.

Then murmurs.

That hadn't looked fast.

But it had ended instantly.

Inside Raizen's mind:

"Movement classification: stealth-dominant combat style."

Raizen watched closely.

Raizen's Turn

"Raizen Tenrai."

This time—

The reaction was louder.

Across the ring—

Kenji Sato.

Lean.

Sharp.

Focused.

Two kunai already drawn.

"Let's see if the rumors are true."

Raizen stepped forward.

One kunai.

Relaxed grip.

No wasted motion.

The Opening

Kenji moved first.

Fast.

Clean.

A diagonal slash toward Raizen's shoulder.

Raizen shifted.

Minimal movement.

Metal rang as blades met.

Kenji pressed forward.

Combinations.

Feints.

Pressure.

Raizen didn't counter.

Not yet.

He watched.

Adjusted.

Measured.

Astra's Analysis

Inside his mind:

"Opponent pattern identified."

"Attack rhythm: aggressive multi-strike."

"Weakness: overcommitment during second extension."

Raizen's stance shifted slightly.

Kenji noticed.

"You figure something out?"

Raizen answered simply.

"Yes."

The Solution

Kenji lunged again.

Same rhythm.

Same pressure.

But this time—

Raizen moved first.

Step in.

Angle shift.

Blade redirection.

Wrist twist.

Kenji's kunai slipped free.

Before he could react—

Raizen's blade stopped at his chest.

Still.

Controlled.

Final.

"Match."

Instructor Evaluation

Instructor Aran didn't speak immediately.

He watched.

Then nodded once.

"Match confirmed."

The crowd reacted.

Because this fight had been different.

No flash.

No struggle.

No wasted motion.

Raizen hadn't fought to win.

He had—

Solved it.

Inside his mind, Astra confirmed:

"Combat resolution method: optimal."

The Watching Rival

Across the field—

Rei Kisaragi stood near the rail.

Watching.

No reaction.

No expression.

Just analysis.

Because this—

Was not their real match.

And both of them understood that.

End of Phase One

As the sun dipped behind the cliffs, Aran addressed the students again.

"The first phase is complete."

Groans.

Fatigue.

Relief.

He continued:

"Tomorrow begins strategic evaluation."

More groans.

Aran ignored them.

"Strength alone does not create leaders."

A pause.

"Adaptation does."

He dismissed them.

Instructor Deliberation

But the instructors did not leave.

They remained.

Reviewing.

Discussing.

Names were already separating from the rest.

Raizen Tenrai.

Rei Kisaragi.

Akari Mizuta.

Different styles.

Same result.

Potential.

And the academy—

Had begun to decide who mattered.
