Chapter 117 - Chapter 115 — After the War Game

The forest slowly returned to silence.

The instructors' voices carried through the trees as the exercise officially ended.

"War game concluded."

"Remaining students return to the assembly clearing."

Leaves shifted underfoot as students began emerging from the forest paths.

Some were covered in dirt. Others limped slightly from bruises, exhaustion, or both.

The battle was over.

But the energy of competition still lingered in the air.

The Ridge

Daigo finally dropped onto a flat stone near the banner pole.

"…That," he said between breaths, "was insane."

He rubbed the back of his neck and looked at the banner.

"I thought they were taking it for sure."

Akari walked to the ridge edge and pulled free the arrow she had planted earlier.

"You let one get too close."

Daigo scoffed.

"I handled it."

She gave him a flat look.

"You almost lost the strap."

Daigo grinned anyway.

"Still handled it."

Raizen stood a short distance away near the ridge's edge, looking down over the forest.

Students were beginning to gather below.

Instructors were calling everyone back.

Inside his mind Astra spoke quietly.

"Physical fatigue detected."

"Minor muscular strain."

"Recovery recommended."

Raizen ignored it for the moment.

His focus remained on the forest.

The second-years had not held back.

That mattered.

Because it meant this had not been some casual academy exercise to them.

They had fought seriously.

And that meant the first-years had been tested seriously too.

Haruto Returns

Footsteps approached from behind.

Raizen turned slightly.

Haruto Kagami climbed back onto the ridge.

No rush.

No anger.

Just calm.

Daigo straightened immediately.

"…What, round two?"

Haruto shook his head.

"The exercise is over."

His eyes settled on Raizen.

"…You planned the ridge."

Raizen didn't answer.

Haruto studied him for another second, then gave a slow nod.

"…You're dangerous."

It wasn't mockery.

It wasn't bitterness.

It was a professional conclusion.

Akari crossed her arms.

"You only figured that out today?"

A faint smirk touched Haruto's face.

Then he turned and started back down the ridge.

Over his shoulder, he said,

"Next time, I won't underestimate you."

That was not a threat.

It was a promise.

Return to the Clearing

By the time Raizen's squad reached the assembly clearing, most of the students had already gathered.

The forest opening buzzed with low conversation.

Everyone had either seen the ridge battle— or heard about it from someone who had.

Daigo rolled his shoulders and looked around proudly.

"Yeah," he muttered, "they definitely saw that."

Akari ignored the stares.

She stood beside Raizen with the same calm posture she always carried.

Across the clearing, second-year students gathered in their own groups.

Some looked irritated.

Some looked impressed.

Some looked like they were still deciding how they felt.

Then the instructors stepped forward.

Aran Speaks

Takashi Aran stood at the front of the clearing.

The noise faded almost immediately.

"The exercise is complete."

His voice carried easily through the trees.

"The purpose of the war game was to test three things."

He looked across the gathered students.

"Team coordination."

"Battlefield awareness."

"And leadership."

His eyes paused briefly on Raizen.

Then moved on.

"Most of you learned something today."

"Some of you learned more than others."

A few students shifted awkwardly.

Aran gestured back toward the ridge.

"The banner squad successfully defended its objective."

Murmurs spread through the clearing.

But Aran lifted a hand slightly.

The noise dropped again.

"That," he said, "is not the only result."

He turned his head slightly.

"Instructor Ren."

Ren's Evaluation

Kaito Ren stepped forward.

His tone was less severe than Aran's, but no less direct.

"We observed several strong performances."

His eyes moved through the first-years.

"Akari Mizuta."

Akari remained still.

"Your battlefield positioning was excellent."

"You maintained range, preserved mobility, and controlled enemy movement without overcommitting."

A few students looked toward her.

Ren continued.

"Daigo Mizuta."

Daigo stood straighter.

"You held the banner under direct pressure."

"You made mistakes."

Daigo's grin dropped slightly.

Then Ren added,

"You recovered from them."

"That matters more."

Daigo nodded once, more serious now.

Then Ren's gaze shifted again.

And stopped.

"Raizen Tenrai."

The clearing quieted.

Ren spoke slowly.

"You did not try to overpower the battlefield."

"You shaped it."

He paused.

"That is rarer than most students realize."

Even among the second-years, the reaction was immediate.

A few murmurs.

A few glances.

A few expressions tightening.

Aran raised his hand again.

Silence returned.

A New Reputation

Aran stepped forward once more.

"The academy does not exist to reward the loudest victory."

His gaze moved across both year groups.

"It exists to sharpen those who learn fastest."

Then his eyes settled briefly on the first-year leaders.

"Today, several of you proved exactly why that matters."

That was all.

No grand speech.

No exaggerated praise.

Which made it hit harder.

The instructors turned and began organizing dismissal.

Almost immediately, conversation erupted again.

"…Did you see that ridge fight?"

"…He beat Haruto…"

"…A first-year…"

"…No way…"

Daigo stretched and smiled.

"…We are definitely famous now."

Akari rolled her eyes.

"Relax."

Then, after a brief pause, she glanced toward Raizen.

"…Still."

"That was a good fight."

Raizen gave the slightest nod.

But his eyes had already shifted beyond the clearing.

Toward the academy buildings beyond the forest.

Inside his mind Astra spoke softly.

"Observation confirmed."

"Your presence is now widely recognized among academy students."

Raizen already knew.

Something had changed today.

Not the world.

Not yet.

But inside Kumogakure Academy— his name had begun to spread.

And this— was only the beginning
