Chapter 122 - Chapter 120 — The Instructor’s Lesson

The next morning arrived colder than usual.

Low storm clouds drifted across the mountains surrounding Kumogakure.

Wind cut through the academy courtyard in steady gusts, snapping the training flags along the outer walls.

Students gathered for morning assembly.

Clusters formed.

Voices carried.

"…I heard Aran-sensei's planning something."

"…Another combat drill?"

"…Please not another war game…"

Daigo stretched lazily beside Raizen and Akari.

"…If it's another war game, I'm skipping it."

Akari didn't look at him.

"You wouldn't make it past the first minute."

Daigo shrugged.

"Worth it."

Raizen stood still, watching the instructors gather.

Inside his mind, Astra spoke.

"Instructor activity elevated."

"Structured training probability: high."

Raizen expected it.

The war game had exposed too much.

Now the instructors would correct it.

Instructor Aran Steps Forward

The courtyard fell silent as Takeshi Aran stepped forward.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

"Yesterday's exercise revealed weaknesses."

A few students shifted.

Aran's gaze moved across the crowd.

"Some of you rely too much on strength."

A pause.

"Some rely too much on speed."

Another pause.

Then—

"And some rely too much on strategy."

His eyes passed over Raizen.

Not lingering.

But not missing.

The message landed.

"A shinobi who leans on one pillar will collapse when it fails."

Silence spread across the courtyard.

The Next Phase

Aran turned slightly, pointing toward the mountains behind the academy.

"The next phase begins today."

Students followed his gesture.

The cliffs rose sharply.

Jagged.

Unforgiving.

Paths carved thin lines across the rock.

"Endurance training."

Groans spread immediately.

Daigo muttered.

"…Of course."

Aran continued.

"You will climb the mountain trail."

"Reach the summit."

"Then return."

A student raised a hand.

"…How long is the trail?"

"Eight kilometers."

The courtyard erupted.

Daigo stared.

"Eight?!"

Akari adjusted her bow strap.

"…That's manageable."

Daigo looked at her like she was insane.

The Real Rule

Aran raised one hand.

Silence returned instantly.

"You will not climb alone."

Students froze.

"You will move in squads."

The meaning settled in quickly.

Aran continued.

"A shinobi does not abandon their team."

"If one of you fails…"

"…all of you fail."

The energy in the courtyard shifted.

This wasn't endurance.

This was pressure.

The weakest link would decide everything.

Squad Reality

Students began organizing quickly.

Some confident.

Some already worried.

Daigo rubbed his face.

"…Yeah, this is worse than the war game."

Akari shrugged.

"Then don't fall behind."

Daigo looked at Raizen.

"…You're definitely carrying me, right?"

Raizen didn't look at him.

"No."

Daigo sighed.

"Had to try."

Astra's Read

Inside Raizen's mind, Astra activated.

"Terrain model loaded."

"Energy expenditure projection active."

"Team endurance variance detected."

Raizen looked toward the mountain.

This wasn't a physical test.

It was a systems test.

Team pacing.

Load balance.

Decision timing.

Aran never designed simple exercises.

The Climb Begins

Squads began moving.

Students filtered onto the mountain trail in groups.

The academy faded behind them.

Stone replaced dirt.

Wind grew sharper.

The air thinner.

Akari glanced upward.

"…Storm's coming."

Daigo groaned.

"Perfect timing."

Raizen stepped onto the incline.

The ground shifted underfoot.

The path narrowed.

The climb had begun.

Behind them— structure.

Ahead— uncertainty.

Inside his mind, Astra spoke.

"Environmental instability confirmed."

Raizen looked toward the summit.

Hidden behind clouds.

Unclear.

Distant.

Unforgiving.

Good.

Because this wasn't about reaching the top.

It was about how they got there.

And whether they could do it together.
