The ridge break had been a lie.
That realization spread slowly through the gathered students as they caught their breath on the wide stone ledge halfway up the mountain.
Many had assumed the hardest part of the climb was over.
They were wrong.
Above them, the trail narrowed sharply as it wound toward the summit.
Jagged rock faces forced the path into a tight corridor that zigzagged through the cliffs.
Wind roared across the slope.
Loose gravel shifted under every step.
Daigo stared upward with disbelief.
"…That's not a trail."
Akari followed his gaze.
"That's the real climb."
Raizen said nothing.
Inside his mind Astra spoke.
"Remaining ascent: steep incline.
"
"Environmental hazard probability:
high."
Raizen had already guessed.
Aran never designed simple endurance exercises.
The climb itself was only the beginning.
The Summit Watchers
Far above the trail, several instructors stood along the narrow summit ridge.
They watched the students carefully as squads climbed toward them.
Kaito Ren leaned casually against a rock.
"…Most of them thought the ridge was the finish line."
Beside him, Takeshi Aran stood unmoving.
"That assumption was the test."
Ren chuckled.
"Cruel."
Aran didn't respond.
His eyes remained fixed on the climbing students below.
Especially one squad that had maintained the same controlled pace since the base of the mountain.
The Final Ascent
The trail beyond the ridge forced students to climb single-file along narrow stone ledges.
Hands were needed now.
Several sections required careful scrambling across uneven rock.
Daigo muttered as he climbed.
"…Why are academy exercises always trying to kill us?"
Akari stepped easily across a narrow gap in the rock.
"Because shinobi missions are worse."
Daigo groaned.
"That's not comforting."
Raizen climbed steadily behind them.
Every step measured.
Breathing controlled.
Inside his mind Astra continued monitoring.
"Muscle fatigue: moderate."
"Hydration levels: acceptable."
"Balance stability: optimal."
The wind strengthened as they climbed higher.
Storm clouds drifted across the peak above.
Lightning flickered faintly inside the clouds.
The summit was close now.
The Obstacle Line
When the first students finally reached the top, they stopped in confusion.
A line of wooden posts had been hammered into the ground across the summit path.
Between them stretched ropes, narrow beams, and unstable stepping platforms.
It was an obstacle course.
And the wind at the summit made every movement more dangerous.
Daigo stared.
"…You've got to be kidding."
Akari crossed her arms.
"…Balance test."
Raizen stepped forward.
Aran's voice carried across the summit.
"Final phase."
The students turned toward him.
Aran stood calmly at the far end of the obstacle line.
"You will cross the summit course."
"Without falling."
A student raised his hand nervously.
"…Sensei, what happens if we fall?"
Ren answered with a grin.
"You climb back up."
The wind howled across the summit.
No one laughed.
The Balance Test
The first students stepped onto the narrow beams.
Immediately the wind pushed against them.
One student wobbled dangerously before regaining balance.
Another slipped and dropped onto the safety ropes below.
Daigo scratched his head.
"…Okay."
"That's actually worse than the climb."
Akari stepped onto the first beam without hesitation.
Her balance was perfect.
Wind pushed against her clothing, but she adjusted her stance smoothly.
Raizen followed behind her.
The beam shifted slightly under his weight.
He adjusted instantly.
Inside his mind Astra spoke.
"Balance correction applied."
"Wind pattern analyzed."
Raizen moved forward calmly.
Each step precise.
No wasted movement.
Behind him, Daigo stepped onto the beam.
"…I regret everything."
The Final Stretch
One by one, the students crossed the summit course.
Some fell and had to climb back up.
Others barely maintained balance.
But the squads that worked together performed better.
Calling out warnings.
Helping steady each other.
By the time Raizen's squad reached the final platform, the wind had grown stronger.
The last obstacle was a narrow rope bridge stretched across a gap in the rocks.
Below it—
A steep drop down the mountain slope.
Daigo stared at the bridge.
"…That's illegal."
Akari stepped onto the rope without hesitation.
"Stop talking and move."
Raizen crossed behind her.
The ropes swayed in the wind.
But his balance remained steady.
Astra adjusted his timing slightly with each step.
Daigo followed last.
"…If I die, I'm blaming Aran."
Moments later all three stepped onto solid ground.
Across the summit platform.
They had finished.
Instructor Judgment
Aran studied the students who had completed the course.
His expression revealed nothing.
Then he spoke.
"Endurance alone does not make a shinobi."
The wind whipped across the summit.
"You must maintain focus."
"Even when exhausted."
Ren stepped forward beside him.
"And most importantly—"
He nodded toward the students.
"—you must rely on your squad."
Aran raised his hand.
"The summit trial is complete."
Students exhaled in relief.
Some collapsed onto the ground.
Others simply stared out across the clouds below the mountain.
The View
Raizen stood quietly near the edge of the summit.
The entire village of Kumogakure spread far below them.
Inside his mind Astra spoke softly.
"Exercise completed successfully."
Raizen looked out over the storm clouds.
This had only been training.
But even training revealed something important.
Every step forward—
Brought him closer to the future he intended to build.
And the academy year wasn't finished yet.
The final exams were still coming.
