I spent the next hour doing what I do best, looking for the catch. I checked the smoke detectors for pinhole cameras, tore back the sheets to ensure no pressure sensors were hidden in the mattress, and even poked around the vents. Clean.


Either Damian was a man of his word about my privacy, or his tech was so advanced I couldn't even see the strings.


I sat back down on the edge of the bed, the tablet still glowing like a cursed relic in the dim room.


Marco Vance. The name felt like a heavy weight, pulling me back toward the shadows I'd tried so hard to leave behind.


I swiped the tablet again, but the screen didn't change. Just that blank silhouette.


"You wanted me to do a job, the least you could do was have your information complete, Damian." I grumbled to the empty room, my thumb tracing the hilt of my dagger where I'd tucked it into my waistband.
