Chapter 13 - Nothing But Cracks

Dante POV

I have interrogated men twice her size who broke in under ten minutes.

I want to be clear about that. Grown men. Armed men. Men who had survived things that would end most people, and they still broke, because everyone breaks when you know exactly where to push.

I sat down across from Mia Russo with my coffee and my bread roll and my friendliest smile, and I started pushing.

It began casually. That was always how I did it.

"So," I said, pulling out the stool beside her after Luca left the kitchen for a call. "How long have you been in the city?"

She looked at me over her mug. "Three years."

"Where from originally?"

"Small town about three hours east. You wouldn't know it."

"Try me."

She told me the name. She was right; I didn't know it. I filed it away anyway.

"What did you study?" I asked.

"Nursing. Two years. Then my mother got sick and I had to stop."
