Chapter 8 - The First Update

Nicolas Drake stood quietly near the park path.

The early morning air moved gently through the trees. A few people walked in the distance, some with headphones, others walking their dogs.

None of them noticed the man standing still near the path.

But Nicolas's attention was fixed on the empty space in front of him.

The final line from the system still lingered in his mind.

Progress: 5 / 5 Quests Completed.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

The message faded.

The air returned to normal.

Nicolas remained still.

If the system followed logic, something should happen now.

He waited.

A few seconds passed.

Then the text appeared again.

[System Notice]

Minimum Conditions Achieved.

Host Physical Baseline Stabilized.

Initializing System Upgrade.

Nicolas blinked once.

The words remained steady in front of him.

There was no sound.

No dramatic effect.

Just the message.

He read it again carefully.

Host Physical Baseline Stabilized.

The wording suggested that the last five tasks had been some kind of initial calibration.

Another message appeared.

[Absolute Reintegration Core]

Tier Advancement Initiated.

Current Tier: Null

Upgrading to: Tier 1

Please Stand By.

Nicolas tilted his head slightly.

"Stand by," he repeated quietly.

He did exactly that.

He stood there without moving.

A jogger passed by and glanced at him briefly before continuing along the path.

The system text disappeared again.

Then, after several seconds, a new message appeared.

[Upgrade Complete]

Absolute Reintegration Core

Tier 1 Activated.

Unlocked Features:

• Status Window

• Attribute Monitoring

• System Log

Nicolas observed the list carefully.

Three new functions.

The words felt familiar.

Almost like software features.

Which made sense.

The system itself behaved like a structured program.

He spoke quietly.

"Status."

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the space in front of him shifted again.

A larger window appeared.

It looked simple.

Clean.

Minimal.

No colors, no decorations.

Just information.

[Status Window]

Name: Nicolas Drake

Race: Human

Age: 24

Strength: 1.05

Endurance: 1.05

Agility: 1.00

Intelligence: 1.00

Condition: Stable

Nicolas stared at the numbers.

They matched the rewards he had received during the last five days.

Each completed quest had increased strength and endurance slightly.

The system had tracked everything.

He focused on the first number.

Strength: 1.05.

If the system's scale used 1.00 as the average baseline, then his physical strength had increased by five percent.

A small number.

But measurable.

Real.

Nicolas flexed his fingers slowly.

He didn't feel dramatically stronger.

But the difference in stamina during his runs had already confirmed something had changed.

He shifted his attention back to the window.

Agility and intelligence remained unchanged.

That suggested the system only modified attributes connected to the tasks completed.

Logical.

He studied the rest of the interface.

There were no additional menus.

No complicated options.

Just the information displayed in front of him.

He spoke again.

"System log."

The status window disappeared.

Another message appeared.

[System Log]

Initialization Phase Complete.

Host Physical Baseline Stabilized.

Attribute Monitoring Activated.

Further Development Pending.

Nicolas read the lines twice.

Initialization Phase.

So the first five quests had been nothing more than the beginning.

He looked around the park again.

People continued walking past.

The world remained normal.

No one reacted to the messages floating in front of him.

Which meant only he could see them.

Nicolas exhaled slowly.

He had spent the last few days wondering whether the system would truly evolve after five tasks.

Now he had the answer.

Yes.

It had.

He closed his eyes briefly.

A thought crossed his mind.

"If this continues…"

He stopped the sentence halfway.

There was no need to speculate yet.

The system had shown a pattern.

Tasks.

Rewards.

Progression.

Understanding it would require time.

Observation.

Testing.

Just like any other system.

Nicolas opened his eyes again.

"Close."

The interface vanished immediately.

The air in front of him became empty again.

Simple.

Efficient.

He liked that.

No unnecessary functions.

No clutter.

He turned away from the park and began walking back toward his apartment.

His footsteps remained calm and steady.

Inside his mind, however, he organized the information carefully.

The system had a clear purpose.

Reintegration.

Reconstruction.

Improvement.

And it responded to effort.

That meant one thing.

If he continued completing the tasks, the system would continue evolving.

The question was not whether it would change.

The question was how far the changes could go.

Nicolas reached his building and climbed the stairs quietly.

Inside his apartment, he walked straight to the desk.

The burnt computer still sat there.

Silent.

Broken.

A week ago, that project had been the center of his daily routine.

Now it felt strangely distant.

He picked up the notebook and opened it.

Below the previous entries, he wrote a new line.

Day 5 — System Upgrade

Tier 1 Activated.

Attributes Visible.

Strength: 1.05

Endurance: 1.05

Nicolas stared at the page for a moment.

Then he closed the notebook.

The room fell silent again.

Somewhere outside, a car passed along the street.

Nicolas leaned back in his chair and looked toward the ceiling.

For the first time since the lightning strike, he had confirmation.

The system was real.

And it had only just begun working.
