The Generator Room
The door creaked open, revealing the generator room of the city hall. It was dark, and the lights wouldn't turn on.
But somehow, there was a faint blue glow in the distance. An emergency light, maybe?
We walked further in, Black Watch looming a little too close for comfort.
I took a deep breath to steady myself.
Fern Mask opened the generator panel.
"What is this?"
Inside the generator were faint blue rocks. Like lava under ice.
"We don't know. We sent it to the labs and even Stella doesn't know."
Nobody knew what this was and they let the three of us get this close to it? Barnaby's words came rushing back.
"I hope you don't get killed out there today."
Was that a joke or…
Considering the coldness Stella showed me…
"This is dangerous," I said. I was sure of it.
"Oh, no—it's safe to touch. Go on."
Black said.
I snapped my head toward him. He stared back at me as if this was completely normal.
Was he serious?
I reached out hesitantly. My hand trembled. I stiffened my fingers, trying to stop the trembling. What if they notice it?
I touched it.
It was cold and dense. I pressed my index finger harder.
It was tough as a rock.
I stared at it. Could this have caused the tracker to mess up?
I leaned back as Fern shut the electrical panel. Far too quickly.
"Well then, let's head back."
Fern Mask said, almost as if he was trying to pull me away from the room.
I stared at the panel, the glowing blue light.
I leaned against the windowsill, watching the outside. It was dark. Darker than a city should be.
Behind me, Fern Mask and Black Watch were chatting—messing around. Whispering something I couldn't really hear.
What were they always whispering about? Was it about me? How was I supposed to bring that up?
My eyes narrowed as I spotted something blue flashing in the sky, piercing through the clouds.
What was that?
It grew bigger. And bigger.
My pupils dilated. It was heading straight towards us.
"Fern Mask! Black Watch!"
I shouted as I stepped away from the window.
