Chapter 6 - A new master

Chapter 6: A new master

As the sun set over the Kingdom of Axel, the survivors of the "Shrine of Sin" reached the palace gates. They had fought through the jaws of death to return, but they were no longer the proud guards who had left. They were shattered, trembling men with eyes full of horror, too stunned to even speak. Leo stood at the front, while the broken captain had to be carried by the others.

‎Inside the throne room, Prince Eric paced back and forth like a restless predator. Beside him sat Phina, occupying the chair at his right hand. Though she had finally secured the title of Queen, she was restless, knowing deep down that the crown she wore did not truly belong to her. When the doors finally burst open and the guards stumbled in, Eric looked at their pathetic state with pure disgust, offering no words of comfort.

‎He didn't bother to ask about their wounds; instead, he roared, "Where is she? Where is the prisoner?"

‎The guards stammered, paralyzed by fear. Leo fell to his knees, pressing his forehead to the ground. "Your Highness... she is gone. And she is not alone."

‎"Gone?" Phina cried, leaping to her feet. "How can one thin girl escape a thousand armed men?"

‎Leo's voice shook as the memories flooded back. "It... it wasn't just the girl. A shadow protects her. A demon. He is called the Prince of Darkness." Another guard added that the creature spoke of a contract signed in blood, and with a mere breath, he had shattered their steel swords and the very walls of the shrine. "He said the prisoner is the Queen of the Shrine... and of Axel."

‎At the mention of Victoria being the "Queen of Axel," Eric stopped in his tracks. A wave of rage and cold, creeping dread washed over him. He suddenly burst into a manic laughter that terrified the guards. In that moment, he remembered the riddle that had stumped both him and his father, and the shadow Victoria had seen at the feast.

‎"The son of Zancus," Eric whispered, the words tasting like poison. "The stories my late father told were true."

‎Leo swallowed hard and continued, "He told us to tell you that there is a new master in town. The Heir has returned, and she is not alone."

‎"What is he talking about?" Phina demanded, turning to Eric. "What does he mean, the Queen has returned?"

‎Eric remained silent, lost in a dark trance. Sensing the danger, Phina ordered the guards to keep everything they saw a secret, fearing that if the people of Axel found out the truth, they would lose the throne. Eric ordered the failing guards to be detained, and once they were gone, Phina turned to him with a murderous look.

‎"We need to kill Victoria," she hissed. "Not just imprison her. She has the protection of a demon leader. If the people find out, we are finished. We must erase her from existence."

‎Eric didn't answer. He was staring toward the dark corner of the room that led to the forbidden Royal Chambers, where the secrets of King Arthur were buried. Without a word to Phina, he stomped out of the room, leaving her alone in the silence.

‎He reached the secret chamber and began to pace, whispering to himself, "If she has a demon, then I must find a way to bind my own. I must find what my great-grandfather used to kill Zancus. Whatever can kill the father can kill the son."

‎Meanwhile, far away on a hilltop, Victoria and Lucas stood looking down at the distant towers of Axel. "They won't stop," Victoria said softly. Behind her, the "Shrine of Sin" was no longer a physical building; it had become a void in the shadows, pulsing in perfect rhythm with her own heartbeat.

‎"I know," Lucas replied, his eyes scanning the palace in the distance. "But neither will I. Your mother's bracelet... it is more than just jewelry, Victoria. It is a key. It is time you learned of your true origin—and how to use it." The following day, Prince Eric remained obsessed with discovering how to awaken his own shadow demon—the same terrifying creature that had served his great-grandfather, King Arthur. This demon was the traitor who had betrayed Zancus, and now it was tied to Eric's lineage. Eric even tried using blood to summon it, but when there was still no answer, he struck out in a fit of pure rage.

‎Meanwhile, on the hilltop, the silence was broken by the pulsing energy of the "Shrine of Sin," which now lived within Victoria's own shadow. She looked down at her golden bracelet as Lucas's words echoed in her mind.

‎"A key?" Victoria asked, her eyes meeting Lucas's golden stare. "A key to what? My mother was just an ordinary woman trapped in a cruel marriage. How could she have owned something that binds the Prince of Darkness to me?"

‎Lucas walked closer to her and let out a heavy sigh.

‎"Your mother was a woman of Axel, yes," he explained, "but she carried the blood of a Keeper. The man you grew up believing was your father is not your real father. Your true father was a born Keeper of the demons, meant to ensure the contract between our people was never broken. King Zack murdered him. He killed your father and married your mother, believing he could steal the Keeper's power. But before he could take it, your mother passed that power to you. She asked Elder James to protect you before she took her own life. To keep you safe, James gave you to Zane—but Zane failed to protect you because of his own greed."

‎Lucas reached toward the bracelet but did not touch it. As he grew near, the gold began to hum, sending a vibration deep into Victoria's chest.

‎"This bracelet is a channel," Lucas said. "It was forged from the same material as the demon carving on the shrine's seal, then covered in gold to hide what it really is. When you wear it, you aren't just carrying a memory of your mother. You are holding the reins to the 'Shrine of Sin.'"

‎"How do I use it?" she asked.

‎"You must stop being afraid," Lucas replied. "You have to embrace the darkness within yourself."

‎Victoria let out a heavy, worried sigh. "I don't even know how to be a Queen," she whispered. "And now you want me to be the master of a demon? How is that even possible?"

‎"Then don't be a master," Lucas replied. "Be a partner. The bracelet responds to your emotions; your blood woke me in the shrine because your heart was crying out for help. Now, if you want to clear your name and reclaim your throne, you have to learn."

He stepped toward her, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "You must learn to channel that fire."

Lucas stepped back and stretched out his hand. At his command, the shadows obeyed, and smoke like black fire erupted from his fingertips. "Command the shadows to protect you," he urged.

"I can't," she whispered.

"Yes, you can. Focus. Close your eyes, think deep, and let go."

Victoria followed his instructions, straining to reach the power, but nothing happened. Something deep inside was holding her back. Lucas watched her, knowing the struggle. "You couldn't do it," he said firmly, "because you still haven't embraced the darkness."
