Chapter 28 - Sophie’s First Agency Course

penthouse kitchen still smelled faintly of maple syrup and coffee when Elena arrived.

She was crisp and professional as always—tailored blazer, tablet in hand, low heels clicking softly on the hardwood—but her smile softened when she saw Sophie sitting at the island between Raymond and Alicia. The girl looked small in one of Raymond's oversized hoodies, hair still messy from sleep, but her eyes were clearer than they'd been the night before.

Elena set her tablet down and pulled out a chair across from Sophie.

"Good morning," she said gently. "I'm Elena. I handle legal matters for Raymond—and now for you, if you want me to."

Sophie nodded—small, nervous, but not retreating.

Raymond poured Elena a coffee. Alicia stayed beside Sophie, hand resting lightly on her back—silent support.

Elena didn't rush.

She started simple.

"You're sixteen," she said. "In this jurisdiction, that means you have more voice than most people realize. You can't be forced to live somewhere you feel unsafe. You can express your preference to a judge. And judges listen—especially when there's a pattern of emotional coercion or control."

Sophie's fingers tightened around her mug.

Elena opened her tablet, turned it so Sophie could see the screen—a clean, bullet-point document titled Temporary Protective Measures & Guardianship Options.

"Here are your choices," Elena continued. "We can go several ways. The lightest touch is a temporary safety plan: you stay here with Raymond and Alicia, Victor is notified, and we ask for a court order limiting his contact until a full hearing. No custody change—just space."

Sophie exhaled shakily.

"Or," Elena went on, "we can file for temporary guardianship. Raymond and/or Alicia would have legal decision-making power for things like school, medical care, residence—usually for 6–12 months, renewable. Victor would still have parental rights, but his access would be supervised or restricted based on evidence of emotional harm."

Sophie looked at Raymond.

He met her eyes—steady, calm.

"You don't have to decide everything today," he said. "We can start with the safety plan. See how it feels. If you want more protection later, we go from there."

Sophie bit her lip.

Alicia spoke softly.

"You're not choosing forever," she said. "You're choosing right now. What feels safest today. That's all."

Sophie stared at the document.

Then at Elena.

Then at Raymond and Alicia.

Her voice came out small but clear.

"I want the safety plan," she said. "I want to stay here. I want… space. From him. Just for now."

Elena nodded—once, approving.

"That's a good first step. We can file this afternoon. I'll draft the petition, include your statement, reference the recent leaks as evidence of escalating family conflict affecting your well-being. We'll request a temporary order barring Victor from contacting you except through counsel until a hearing in 7–14 days."

Sophie swallowed.

"Will he… be mad?"

Raymond leaned forward.

"He'll be furious," he said honestly. "But his anger isn't your responsibility. His behavior is. And if he tries to punish you for this—for choosing safety—we'll handle it. Legally. Quickly."

Sophie looked at Alicia.

"You really think a judge will listen to me?"

Alicia squeezed her shoulder.

"I know they will. Because you're not asking for revenge. You're asking for peace. Judges hear that every day—and they usually say yes."

Sophie exhaled—long, trembling.

"Okay," she whispered. "Let's do it."

Elena smiled—small, professional, warm.

"I'll get started. You'll need to sign a short affidavit. Just your words. What you feel. What you want. No exaggeration. Just truth."

Sophie nodded.

Elena opened a new document.

Sophie began to speak—halting at first, then steadier.

"I feel scared when my dad gets angry. He doesn't hit me, but he… shuts me out. Takes my phone. Tells me I'm disappointing the family. I don't feel safe talking to him about anything real anymore. I want to stay with Uncle Ray and Alicia. They make me feel like I can be myself. Like I don't have to be perfect. I just want space to breathe."

Alicia's eyes stung.

Raymond's hand found hers under the table—squeezed.

Elena typed quickly, then read it back.

Sophie listened. Nodded.

"That's exactly it," she said.

She signed—hand shaking only slightly.

Elena saved the file.

"I'll file electronically this afternoon. We should have a temporary order by end of day tomorrow at the latest. Until then, no contact from Victor without your consent. If he shows up or calls, we document it. Marcus is already on alert."

Sophie looked around the table—at Elena's calm efficiency, at Raymond's quiet strength, at Alicia's steady warmth.

For the first time in years, she felt something new.

Agency.

Choice.

Power over her own story.

She looked at Alicia.

"Thank you," she whispered. "For… showing me I could choose."

Alicia smiled—tears in her eyes.

"You always could," she said softly. "You just needed someone to remind you."

Sophie leaned over—hugged Alicia fiercely.

Then turned and hugged Raymond.

He hugged her back—tight, protective, like he'd been waiting years to do it properly.

When she pulled away, she looked lighter.

"Pizza tonight?" she asked—voice small, hopeful.

Raymond laughed—quiet, relieved.

"Pizza tonight," he agreed. "Extra cheese. Extra whipped cream on the side."

Sophie grinned—real, bright, sixteen.

And just like that, the first real choice of her life settled into place.

Not perfect.

Not forever.

But hers.
