Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 - Running From Fate

The train station stood near the edge of the city.

Its tall glass windows reflected the night lights and the damp streets outside.

Inside, the station was quieter than usual.

Only a few late-night travelers sat on the metal benches.

A vending machine hummed softly in the corner.

Liya and Ethan stepped through the entrance.

For the first time all evening, Liya felt a small sense of relief.

Stations were controlled environments.

Predictable.

Organized.

Less chaos.

Ethan checked the digital schedule board above the platforms.

10:39 PM.

"Looks like we have a train leaving in twenty minutes," he said.

"Where does it go?" Liya asked.

He squinted at the screen.

"Does it matter?"

She sighed.

"Fair point."

He pointed at the listing.

"North line. Small towns. Far from the city."

"Perfect."

They walked toward the ticket machine.

Ethan quickly purchased two tickets.

He handed one to Liya.

"Escape plan officially activated."

She looked down at the small piece of paper.

It felt strangely important.

Like a tiny rebellion against fate.

"What if it works?" she asked quietly.

"What if what works?"

"What if leaving the city stops the loop?"

Ethan thought about it.

"That would be great."

"And if it doesn't?"

"Then we tried something new."

He smiled gently.

"That's all we can do."

They moved toward the platform.

The tracks stretched into darkness beyond the station.

A cold breeze drifted through the open space.

Liya glanced at the large station clock.

10:44 PM.

The seconds moved forward steadily.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Her stomach twisted slightly.

"Still nervous?" Ethan asked.

"Yes."

"Understandable."

He leaned against a pillar.

"But think about it."

"What?"

"If I'm still alive after midnight…"

"…we'll know the rules have changed."

She nodded slowly.

That was true.

This could be the breakthrough.

A distant rumble echoed along the tracks.

The train was approaching.

Lights appeared in the distance.

Passengers around them began gathering their bags.

Everything seemed normal.

Too normal.

Ethan suddenly looked thoughtful.

"Something's bothering me."

"What?"

"You said fate creates accidents."

"Yes."

"But so far…"

"…nothing has happened here."

Liya felt that chill again.

"You're right."

The station was calm.

Quiet.

Safe.

Which meant—

Something was wrong.

Then suddenly—

The overhead lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Passengers looked up in confusion.

A faint electrical buzz filled the air.

Liya's heart dropped.

"Ethan…"

"What?"

"That's how it starts."

The station lights flickered again.

Then half of them went dark.

The platform fell into uneven shadows.

People began murmuring nervously.

The train's headlights grew brighter as it approached.

But something felt off.

Very off.

Ethan looked toward the tracks.

"Why is the train going so fast?"

Liya followed his gaze.

The incoming train was moving faster than normal.

Too fast for a station stop.

Its horn suddenly blared loudly.

Passengers stepped back in confusion.

An announcement crackled over the speakers.

But the audio cut in and out.

"…technical malfunction… braking system…"

Liya's eyes widened.

"Oh no."

Ethan grabbed her arm.

"The brakes failed?"

The train roared closer.

Metal wheels screamed against the tracks.

Sparks flew beneath the cars.

Passengers began shouting.

Some started running toward the exits.

The driver blasted the horn again.

The train wasn't slowing down.

It was about to enter the station at full speed.

Liya's pulse exploded.

"Ethan we need to move!"

But Ethan didn't move.

He stared at the oncoming train.

Realization slowly appeared on his face.

"Liya…"

"What?!"

His voice grew quiet.

"I think this one's meant for me."

The train thundered toward the platform.

And the clock above the station entrance changed.

10:49 PM.

More than an hour before midnight.

For the first time…

Fate had moved earlier. ⏳
