The door parted with a soft, pneumatic sigh—too gentle for what waited on the other side.

Heat rolled over me instantly. Not just warmth—density. The thick scent of brewed coffee, old grease, and something colder beneath it… something metallic, invasive.

Presence.

Julian's presence.

The diner—my diner—felt wrong. Familiar shapes, familiar layout… but the atmosphere had shifted, like the space had been rewritten to accommodate a different author.

Julian didn't move.

He stood beside booth four, framed in fractured amber light from the emergency strips along the floor. Shadows cut across his face, carving him into something sharper, more deliberate.

Watching.

Waiting.

He looked at me first.

Then Elena—still frozen outside, half-formed, half-broken.

Then Reid.

And then—

he smiled.

Slow.

Real.

Not the smile of a man who had succeeded.

The smile of a man who had arrived.

Who had been waiting for this exact configuration of people, variables, tension.
