Chapter 30 - CHAPTER 31: THE DEVIL YOU REMEMBER

Night fell like a curtain.

Heavy. Suffocating.

The mansion no longer felt like a home.

It felt like a battlefield waiting for the first real strike.

Lily stood by the window in Adrian's office, staring out into the darkness beyond the gates. The estate stretched far, shadows swallowing everything past the outer lights. Guards moved like silent ghosts along the perimeter, their presence doubled, then tripled since the intrusion.

Still—

It didn't feel like enough.

Not anymore.

"He got in once," she said quietly. "He can do it again."

Behind her, Adrian didn't respond immediately.

He stood near his desk, sleeves rolled up, staring down at a spread of files, photos, and digital screens Marco had pulled together.

Victor Kane.

Five years of silence.

Now… chaos.

"He won't come the same way twice," Adrian said finally.

Lily turned slightly.

"That doesn't make me feel better."

Adrian's gaze lifted to her.

"It shouldn't."

A beat passed.

Then—

"But it gives us an advantage."

Lily frowned. "How?"

Adrian stepped away from the desk, moving toward her slowly.

"Because now we know how he thinks."

She crossed her arms.

"You said you thought he was dead."

"I did."

"Then how do you know who he is now?"

Adrian stopped in front of her.

Close enough that she could see the faint tension in his jaw, the shadows beneath his eyes.

"He hasn't changed," Adrian said.

"Not really."

Lily tilted her head slightly.

"People don't stay the same after something like that."

A flicker of something dark passed through Adrian's eyes.

"No," he agreed. "They don't."

Silence settled again.

But it wasn't empty.

It was full of things unsaid.

"Then tell me," Lily said softly.

Adrian held her gaze for a long moment.

Then—

"He was the best of us."

The words weren't spoken lightly.

"Faster. Smarter. More precise," Adrian continued. "He could read a room in seconds. Predict movement before it happened."

Lily's stomach tightened.

"That sounds… dangerous."

"He was," Adrian said.

A pause.

Then—

"So was I."

Something in the way he said it made her chest ache.

"What made him different?" she asked.

Adrian's expression hardened slightly.

"He enjoyed it."

The answer sent a chill through her.

"Not the mission," Adrian clarified. "Not the objective."

His voice dropped.

"The chaos."

Lily swallowed.

"He didn't just want to win," Adrian continued.

"He wanted the other side to feel it."

A heavy silence followed.

"And now?" Lily asked.

Adrian's gaze darkened.

"Now he has a reason."

The implication hung between them.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

Revenge.

A knock at the door broke the moment.

"Come in," Adrian said.

Marco stepped inside, tablet in hand, expression sharp.

"I've got something."

Adrian turned instantly.

"What did you find?"

Marco walked over, setting the tablet down on the desk and pulling up a series of images.

"Victor didn't just disappear after the explosion," he said.

"He was picked up."

Lily moved closer, looking at the screen.

"By who?"

Marco zoomed in on a grainy image.

"A group operating out of Eastern Europe. Black-site level. No official records. No oversight."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Mercenary network."

Marco nodded.

"Not just any. These guys specialize in reconstruction."

Lily frowned.

"Reconstruction?"

Marco glanced at her.

"They take broken assets… and rebuild them."

Her stomach dropped.

Adrian's voice turned cold.

"They didn't just save him."

"They weaponized him," Lily finished.

Marco gave a small nod.

"Exactly."

Silence.

Lily looked back at the images.

Different timestamps.

Different locations.

Different versions of the same man.

Always watching.

Always waiting.

"How long has he been active?" she asked.

Marco swiped to another file.

"Officially? No record."

A pause.

"But unofficially… there have been patterns."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Hits?"

Marco nodded.

"High-level targets. Clean executions. No witnesses."

Lily's chest tightened.

"And the mark?" Adrian asked.

Marco's expression darkened.

"It only started appearing recently."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"He wasn't announcing himself before."

"No," Marco said. "He is now."

Lily felt a chill crawl up her spine.

"He wants you to know," she said.

Adrian didn't deny it.

"Good," he said instead.

Marco raised a brow.

"Good?"

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"It means he's not hiding anymore."

A dangerous edge crept into his voice.

"It means he wants to be found."

Later that night—

The mansion was quieter.

Not peaceful.

Just… waiting.

Lily couldn't sleep again.

She sat on the edge of her bed, the knife Adrian had given her resting in her hands.

She turned it slowly.

Studying the blade.

The weight.

The reality of it.

A few days ago, this would have terrified her.

Now—

It grounded her.

A soft knock came at the door.

She tensed.

Then relaxed slightly.

"Come in."

The door opened.

Adrian stepped inside.

He didn't say anything at first.

Just looked at her.

"You should be sleeping," he said eventually.

She gave a small, tired smile.

"You first."

A faint exhale—almost a laugh—left him.

"Fair."

He stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then—

"Are you okay?"

The question caught her off guard.

She looked down at the knife in her hands.

"I almost got myself killed today," she said.

Adrian's expression darkened.

"You reacted."

"I got lucky."

"No," he said firmly.

"You survived."

She looked up at him.

"And next time?" she asked quietly.

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"There won't be luck."

A pause.

"There will be skill."

Something in her chest tightened.

"Then you better keep training me," she said.

His gaze softened—just slightly.

"I will."

Silence settled again.

But this time—

It wasn't heavy.

It was… something else.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked suddenly.

Adrian stilled.

"About him," she clarified.

A long pause followed.

"Because he was dead," Adrian said.

Lily tilted her head.

"But he wasn't."

"No," Adrian admitted.

She held his gaze.

"Or maybe… you needed him to be."

The words hit deeper than she expected.

Adrian didn't respond.

But he didn't deny it either.

Lily exhaled slowly.

"This isn't just war for you," she said.

"No."

"It's personal."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Everything in this world is personal," he said quietly.

A beat.

"You just don't always realize it until it's too late."

Somewhere—

Far beyond the mansion walls—

Victor Kane stood in the shadows of an abandoned structure overlooking the estate.

His gaze was fixed.

Unblinking.

A small device glowed faintly in his hand.

Live feed.

From inside.

He had seen everything.

The fight.

The reaction.

Her.

Lily.

A slow smile curved his lips.

"So that's the weakness…"

He tilted his head slightly.

Studying her through the screen.

"Interesting."

He turned the device off.

Darkness swallowed the image.

"Let's see how far you're willing to go for her, brother."

His voice was soft.

Almost amused.

"But more importantly…"

His expression hardened.

"Let's see how far she's willing to go for you."

Back in the mansion—

Lily finally lay down.

Sleep still far away.

But her mind quieter now.

Focused.

She wasn't running anymore.

She wasn't hiding.

She was learning.

Adapting.

Changing.

And somewhere deep inside—

Something new was forming.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

Something sharper.

Stronger.

Dangerous.

Because this war?

It wasn't just Adrian's anymore.

It was hers too.

And she was done being the girl caught in the middle.

Now—

She was stepping into the fire.
