Chapter 18 - Chapter Eighteen: Conditional divergence and convergence

Fati looked out the back window and saw Jaguar's eyes watching them leave with a dark gaze. She felt terrified; she remembered her old colleague and how Jaguar's men dragged him away to teach him a lesson because of her. She knew she had to prevent history from repeating itself.

She turned to Kylo and asked firmly,

- What is wrong with you, Kylo? Weren't you supposed to be at your job interview in the other city today?

- I came back as soon as I heard you left our home!

He replied angrily, gripping the steering wheel. He glanced at her and added,

- Why didn't you tell me? Were you waiting for me to leave so you could go too?

Fati answered with a mix of strength and apology,

- Kylo, I need to stay near the hospital. Patients' lives depend on how fast I arrive during emergencies. My job demands this, and lives could be lost if I'm late... please try to understand. Besides, we are just friends, and your sister Mary is the only one who has more right to question me than you.

A long, heavy silence filled the car. Kylo seemed to be fighting his thoughts. Finally, he broke the silence with a softer voice:

- But I thought you were leaving because... you wanted to leave us.

- No, Kylo,

Fati answered calmly.

- I am leaving for my work, just like you travel for yours.

She looked at her watch anxiously and added,

- Now, take me back quickly; I have an emergency. And you, go back to the other city for your interview.

He shook his head in despair.

- It's no use going back now... I've already missed my chance.

- Then look for a new one

She said firmly as the car turned around to take her back.

As soon as she got out, Fati instinctively looked for where Jaguar had been standing. He was gone. She hurried inside the hospital, losing herself in her work and the cases waiting for her, trying to escape the noise of her own heart.

Jaguar sat in his luxurious chair at the head of a large table filled with "Jack Capital" managers. He was listening to them, but his mind could only see the hands that grabbed Fati. As soon as he received a message from his secretary, Dan, he stood up and said,

- The meeting is over,

Leaving the managers in shock. He didn't remember a single word from the meeting.

In his office, he found a file about Kylo. He was six years younger than Jaguar, a brilliant student who studied architecture in Munich and Berlin. Jaguar realized this was where they met. But the real shock was the timing; they traveled together just two weeks after her grandfather's death and returned together on the same plane, sitting next to each other.

Jaguar stared at the papers and whispered to himself,

- What were you doing all these years, Fati?

The secretary, Dan, entered Jaguar's office and asked cautiously,

- Sir, you have a dinner meeting with Al Noor Company. Do you want me to cancel it?

- No, don't cancel anything,

Jaguar replied firmly.

- Just inform the Palace that I will stop by before dinner to pick up some things.

Since his grandfather fell ill six years ago, Jaguar rarely visited the Palace maybe only ten times. But today, he needed to go back to get the suitcase Fati left behind when she was a "young bride," and to find her old phone.

He turned to his secretary and added with a cold, clever look:

- Regarding that young man, Kylo... I want you to hire him in one of our distant construction branches. Give him so much work that he can barely breathe, and raise his salary so high that he cannot refuse. Make sure his weekend shifts are doubled, and keep me updated on everything.

After a long day of surgeries, Fati was exhausted. Her body was screaming for sleep, but she decided to visit Jaguar's grandfather first. When she entered his room, he was just as he was yesterday lost in a deep coma.

She took his hand and whispered,

- Grandfather, I am here. Don't worry, I will save you. I will take you to visit the grave of the one you love... and I promise to go with you this time.

She paused, her eyes filling with tears.

- I want to visit my own grandfather's grave too, but my heart is too weak. I feel like I failed him. I feel like I am the reason for everything. If only I hadn't given Jaguar that address that night... if only I hadn't given you the phone... or if I had never married Jaguar at all... my grandfather would be alive, and you would be healthy.

She leaned down and kissed his hand.

- Please, Grandfather... open your eyes soon. Look at me with that kind tender look you gave me that night

She started sobbing quietly. After a while, she stood up and said,

- I will leave you now, but I will come back tomorrow. I will stay until Jaguar allows me to treat you.

At the Palace, Jaguar took out Fati's suitcase and phone from his old room and told the servants to put them in his car. He then opened her private box, which held all his pictures. He looked at his own face through her drawings, remembering the way she used to look at him before the wedding. He pulled out her diary and read page after page until he saw the words "Wedding Kiss." She had drawn colorful hearts and arrows all around them with childish passion.

Jaguar smiled sadly and thought,

- How innocent you were, Fati. You loved me before you even knew me, and once you did... I think you hated me.

He left the box there and walked out. This box was a secret he didn't want Fati to know about until he won her heart back.

He went to his business dinner and stayed late on purpose. He wanted to give her space to rest alone in the apartment, without the stress and trouble he had caused her that morning.

Fati arrived at the apartment exhausted, wanting nothing but a bed to sleep in. As she stood before the door, she realized she didn't know the secret code. She tried entering Jaguar's birthday, but it was wrong. She thought about going back to the hospital, but her legs couldn't carry her anymore. She sat on the floor, pulled her knees to her chest, and fell asleep with her head on her knees.

Hours later, Jaguar arrived and saw her sleeping on the cold floor.

- What is she doing here? Why didn't she go inside?

He wondered, before realizing he had forgotten to give her the code. He opened the door, lifted her gently, and placed her in his bed. Then he went back out to bring her suitcase into the room.

Jaguar took a shower and changed into his pajamas. He was about to button his shirt, but he changed his mind and tossed it aside. He lay down in bed next to her. He didn't touch her, but he felt the warmth of her body next to him. Finally, he closed his eyes and slept until morning.
