Chapter 15 - Chapter 15– The Bone Gate

The night forest was quiet.

Only the faint rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of insects filled the air as Marcus stood a few steps outside his territory barrier.

Across from him stood the Goblin Lord.

Her yellow eyes reflected the faint moonlight filtering through the trees.

For several seconds neither of them spoke.

Then she suddenly asked something unexpected.

"Have you entered a dungeon before?"

Marcus blinked.

"...A dungeon?"

He shook his head.

"No."

The Goblin Lord slowly exhaled through her nose.

Then she shook her head slightly.

"As expected."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"You say that like I'm missing something."

The Goblin Lord studied him for another moment.

Then she stepped forward.

"My name is Liliana."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"...That's a very human name for a goblin."

She shrugged slightly.

"It is the name I chose."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Marcus."

Liliana's eyes flicked toward Lyrielle briefly before returning to him.

"I know."

Marcus chuckled.

"Yeah, figured."

Liliana turned and gestured toward the deeper forest.

"Follow me."

Marcus frowned.

"Where?"

She began walking.

"You will see."

Marcus looked at Lyrielle.

She gave him a cautious look.

"My lord… this could be dangerous."

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah."

Then he called toward the gate.

"Alpha."

The large dire wolf stepped forward immediately.

Marcus pointed to several of the wolf demi-humans.

"You four."

Then toward two of the arachne.

"And you two."

They moved into formation instantly.

Marcus looked back at Liliana.

"Lead the way."

She nodded once and began walking.

The Goblin Settlement

The group moved deeper into the forest.

The mist grew thicker the farther they traveled.

But Liliana moved confidently through the trees.

About fifteen minutes later—

The forest opened into a large clearing.

Marcus slowed.

His eyes widened slightly.

"...Oh."

Before them stood a goblin settlement.

Dozens of crude wooden huts surrounded a central bonfire.

Goblins moved throughout the camp carrying tools, weapons, and supplies.

At least sixty goblins.

Every single one of them froze when they saw Marcus and his group.

The wolves growled softly.

The arachne raised their front legs slightly.

The rabbit girls back at the territory would have panicked.

But the goblins here did something unexpected.

They lowered their heads slightly when Liliana walked past.

Respect.

Marcus leaned toward Lyrielle.

"...She's the real boss."

Lyrielle nodded quietly.

Liliana didn't stop walking.

She led them straight through the settlement.

None of the goblins attacked.

None even spoke.

They simply watched.

Curious.

Cautious.

Marcus kept his hand ready near his skill interface just in case.

Eventually they left the settlement behind.

The forest grew darker again.

More twisted.

More ancient.

Then they reached it.

Marcus stopped.

"...What the hell?"

Before them stood an archway made entirely of bones.

Huge ribs formed the pillars.

Massive skulls decorated the top.

Old runes glowed faintly across the structure.

Beyond the archway was nothing but darkness.

A swirling black mist filled the opening.

Marcus felt the air change.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Liliana stepped beside him and pointed toward the arch.

"This."

"This is a dungeon."

Marcus stared at it.

He had expected something like this eventually.

But seeing it in person was different.

The darkness inside the gate almost felt alive.

Lyrielle spoke quietly.

"My lord… the energy here is strong."

Marcus nodded slowly.

Liliana folded her arms.

"Dungeons are places of trial."

Marcus looked at her.

"For what?"

She answered calmly.

"Growth."

She pointed toward the archway again.

"Or death."

Marcus chuckled nervously.

"Well that's encouraging."

Liliana continued.

"A dungeon pushes those who enter it."

"It tests your strength."

"It tests your leadership."

"It tests your army."

Marcus looked back at the swirling darkness.

"And if you fail?"

Liliana shrugged.

"You die."

Marcus sighed.

"Great."

Then he asked the obvious question.

"So why bring me here?"

Liliana looked directly at him.

Her yellow eyes were serious now.

"You defeated the Goblin Champion."

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah."

"You built a territory."

Marcus nodded again.

"Also true."

She gestured toward his soldiers.

"You command monsters."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"And?"

Liliana stepped closer to the dungeon arch.

"If you can clear this dungeon…"

She paused.

"Without losing anyone."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"That's a pretty big if."

Liliana continued.

"My tribe will acknowledge your strength."

Marcus looked at her carefully.

"Meaning?"

She spoke clearly.

"We will not fight you."

Marcus tilted his head.

"...That's it?"

She shook her head.

"For now."

Then she added something interesting.

"We will trade with you."

Marcus blinked.

"Trade?"

Liliana nodded.

"Goblins gather many resources."

"Weapons."

"Stone."

"Metal."

Marcus felt his interest spike immediately.

Trade routes.

Resources.

Possible alliances.

This could be huge.

But there was still a catch.

Marcus pointed at the dungeon.

"And I have to clear that."

Liliana nodded.

"Without losing anyone."

Marcus laughed softly.

"You drive a hard bargain."

Liliana said nothing.

Marcus looked back at the bone archway again.

The dark mist inside swirled slowly.

Waiting.

Watching.

Lyrielle stepped closer.

"My lord… this could be extremely dangerous."

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Then he smiled.

"But that's kinda the point."

He looked at Liliana.

"When does the dungeon open?"

Liliana answered simply.

"It is always open."

Marcus cracked his knuckles.

"Well then."

He turned back toward the archway.

His wolves stood ready.

The arachne waited silently.

Lyrielle prepared her bow.

Marcus grinned.

"Guess we're doing our first dungeon."

And the darkness beyond the bone gate…

Seemed to stir.
