Chapter 13 - Chapter 12: The Man in the Long Coat

The week after the park walk felt heavier than it should have.

Snow fell over the city in thin, tentative inches, enough to make the yellow door look as though it had been dusted with confectioner's sugar, not enough to stop life. Catherine worked from home most days, making mood boards for a winter ad campaign while Shadow slept on the corner of her desk, one paw draped over her wrist like a living paperweight. Luffy opened Brewed Promises early, closed late, told himself it was because holiday orders were picking up. The truth was it was because it was safer than the walk home at night.

He hadn't told Catherine about the second visit.

Two days after Rohan's text, a man in a long charcoal coat came into Brewed Promises just before closing. Tall, thin, gray at the temples, eyes too sharp for a man ordering a simple black coffee. "Still the owner?" he asked. "Luffy, right? You're here every day?"Rohan, who by now gave similar vague answers, watched the man walk out without his coffee, his coat flapping open like wings in the wind.

The next morning, Luffy spotted the cup on the counter, untouched, with a lipstick-red ring around it despite nobody ordering anything with cream in it. He threw it out without saying a word.

This Friday evening, he came home earlier than expected, his cheeks pink from cold, with a paper bag full of roasted chestnuts from the street vendor near the park.

Catherine opened the door and took the paper bag from him, kissed him quickly and softly.

"You're freezing," she said, taking his hands and rubbing them together.

"Come in. I made chai."

The apartment smelled of cardamom and ginger.

Shadow jumped down from the windowsill and wound itself around Luffy's ankles, purring loudly, louder than usual.

Mochi and Matcha sat on the couch, watching with their tails twitching like sentries.

They sat cross-legged on the rug, peeling chestnuts, burning their fingers, laughing when the shells popped.

Catherine offered him a piece of chestnut. He licked the sugar off the end of her thumb.

For a moment, things were normal again: warm, small, theirs.

Then Luffy's phone buzzed on the coffee table.

Luffy looked at it, his expression tense for a moment, then he turned it over so the screen was hidden.

Catherine picked up on it.

"Is everything okay at the café?"

"Yeah." He picked up another chestnut. "Rohan called to ask about tomorrow's pastry order."

She looked at him. "You sure?"

Luffy looked at her, but his gaze was a little too steady.

"I'm sure, wifey."

She didn't press the issue. Instead, she leaned forward and kissed the corner of his mouth.

"Okay. But if there's something wrong, you tell me."

He pulled her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her until she was cocooned against his chest.

"Promise," he whispered into her hair. "Nothing's wrong. Just tired. Holiday rush."

She nodded against his neck, letting herself believe it because believing anything else was just too heavy to carry.

They made love that night, slowly, candlelight from the balcony flickering over their bodies, Shadow at the foot of the bed like a dark sentinel. Luffy held her closer than usual, kissing every inch of her as if he were trying to remember every detail, telling her over and over again, "I love you" between every breath until the words blurred together into a single, soft chant.

She fell asleep with her head on his chest, listening to the thump-thump-thump that had become her favorite lullaby.

Luffy, on the other hand, stayed awake.

He stared up at the ceiling, his hand absently stroking Shadow's back as the cat also stayed awake, watching the bedroom door with golden eyes, perked ears tuned to a frequency no human could ever detect.

Luffy got out of bed quietly at two a.m. and put on a pair of sweat pants. He went to the living room. He stood at the balcony door, looking down at the street.

A man in a long charcoal coat stood under the street lamp across the street, motionless, his face hidden by the brim of a hat. He did not react when he saw Luffy look out the window. He just raised his hand slightly, as if to say hello.

Luffy's heart skipped the sharp pain he was accustomed to, the pain he was accustomed to coming and going.

Luffy put his hand on the cold glass.

The man dropped his hand and turned to walk away into the falling snow. He disappeared around the corner.

Luffy breathed shakily and put his forehead on the glass.

"See, Shadow," Luffy said.

Shadow appeared beside him and jumped up onto the windowsill. He put his side against Luffy's arm.

"You see him too," Luffy said.

Shadow blinked.

Luffy picked up the cat and held him against his chest like a child.

"If you're here to protect her…" His voice cracked. "Then protect her. Because something's coming. And I don't know if I'm strong enough anymore."

Shadow tucked his head under Luffy's chin, purred so deeply it vibrated through both of them.

Luffy closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry," he breathed. "I'm so sorry I left her alone before."

The cat pressed closer, paw over Luffy's heart, right where the ache was.

Luffy slid back into bed, pulling Catherine against him. "Sleep," he whispered, but she murmured something sleepily, rolled over against his warmth without waking.

Luffy kissed her forehead, her eyelids, the tip of her nose.

"I'll fight for every second," he whispered against her skin. "Every heartbeat. Every breath. I swear it, wifey."

Outside, the snow fell soft, relentless, covering every footprint.

Inside, Shadow returned to the foot of the bed, curled into a tight black circle, eyes open in the dark.

Watching.

Waiting.

Guarding the two hearts that had once promised each other forever and were now being asked to keep that promise against something colder than winter.
