Chapter 7 - Awakening in the Blood

The battlefield held its breath. The duel had only begun.

Rain kept falling slowly across the broken land, making the mud darker with every drop. Pieces of shattered armor and bent weapons were scattered everywhere, some half buried in the ground like they had been forgotten for years. The air smelled of wet earth and blood. Kael stood there quietly, gripping the broken spear in his hands while his eyes moved across the battlefield. His chest was rising and falling from the earlier fight, but his focus was sharp now. In front of him, through the thin fog, the real enemy had finally shown itself.

The Graveclaw Bear slowly stepped forward from the mist. The creature was massive, easily towering over Kael with a body that looked strong enough to break stone. Thick dark fur covered its muscles, and rainwater slid down its back while its claws dug deep into the mud. Every step it took made the ground tremble just a little. Its eyes were glowing red in the fog, watching Kael like he was nothing more than prey that had already been caught.

A deep growl rolled from the beast's throat, heavy and rough, making the air feel tense. Kael tightened his grip on the spear as he felt the familiar pulse inside his chest. The Abyss Core throbbed slowly, spreading a strange cold energy through his veins. It was not painful anymore like before. Instead it felt like something dark but powerful supporting him from inside, reminding him that he had already survived things that should have killed him.

[Enemy Detected]

[Graveclaw Bear: Level 9]

The glowing message appeared in front of his eyes. Kael looked at it for a moment and let out a quiet breath. Level 9 was far stronger than him, that much he understood clearly. A creature like that could easily crush someone weaker in seconds. But strangely he did not feel the same fear he once would have. Maybe the Abyss Core had changed something inside him, or maybe he had already crossed a point where fear was useless.

He lowered his body slightly and prepared himself while keeping his eyes locked on the monster. The bear suddenly stood taller, its massive frame rising as it prepared to attack. The tension between them felt thick enough to cut with a knife. Kael could hear the rain hitting the ground and the slow breathing of the beast in front of him.

[New Skill Available: Abyss Strike]

[Do you wish to activate? Yes / No]

Kael blinked once when the message appeared. A new skill right now was unexpected, but the timing felt almost perfect. He didn't think about it for long. There was no point hesitating when the monster was already preparing to charge. His voice was low but clear when he answered.

"Yes."

The moment he accepted, the Abyss Core flared inside his chest. A surge of dark energy rushed through his body and down into the broken spear he was holding. The weapon trembled slightly as thin lines of shadow spread along its surface. Kael could feel the power flowing through his arms now, heavy but controlled, like a storm waiting to be released.

The bear moved first. With a loud roar it lunged forward, its massive claws slashing through the wet air. Kael reacted instantly.

[Shadowstep Activated]

His body vanished just before the claws struck the ground. Mud exploded where he had been standing only a second before. Kael reappeared behind the creature, already moving while the dark energy of Abyss Strike gathered in his weapon. He drove the spear downward with all the strength he had.

Black light burst out as the spear slammed into the bear's shoulder. The creature roared in pain and fury, spinning around quickly while its claws tore through the air. But Kael had already shifted his position again, twisting his body and driving the spear upward into the monster's side.

[Enemy Health: 20%]

The bear staggered backward as dark energy leaked from its wounds. Kael felt the Abyss Core react immediately, pulling in that energy like a hungry void. A strange warmth spread through his body and his tired muscles felt lighter again. His senses sharpened as if the world had suddenly become clearer around him.

Mud and blood splashed as the battle continued. Kael stepped forward again and struck the creature's leg with a hard thrust, forcing the massive beast down onto one knee. The ground shook under its weight while it roared angrily. Kael did not hesitate. His movements were fast now, almost instinctive, like his body already knew what to do before his mind even thought about it.

With a final powerful strike he pushed the spear forward and drove it straight through the bear's chest. The creature froze for a moment, its red eyes wide, before letting out one last roar that echoed across the battlefield. Then its enormous body collapsed heavily into the mud.

Black smoke slowly rose from the corpse and drifted toward Kael.

[Abyss Energy Absorbed]

[Current Capacity: 12%]

The energy sank into his chest. Kael dropped to one knee as rain mixed with the sweat on his face. His heart was pounding loudly in his ears, but there was also a strange thrill inside him. He had faced a monster far stronger than him and still won.

For a moment he thought the battle was finally over. But the quiet feeling didn't last long.

Movement appeared at the edges of the fog. Shapes were shifting in the distance. Then dozens of red eyes began appearing one by one through the mist.

[Multiple Enemies Detected]

[Total Hostile Targets: 17]

Kael slowly stood up again. His eyes moved across the battlefield as more creatures emerged from the fog. Hound dogs were among them, but there were other beasts as well, some taller and more twisted in shape. All of them were moving toward him, drawn by the noise and the smell of blood.

The Abyss Core pulsed faster inside him, as if urging him to keep going.

The monsters attacked all at once.

What followed became a blur of motion and violence. Claws slashed through the air while teeth snapped dangerously close to him. Kael moved constantly, using Shadowstep again and again to appear in different places around the battlefield. His spear struck quickly, sometimes with Abyss Strike and sometimes with simple precise thrusts.

The rain kept falling while the ground turned darker with blood and mud. One monster after another fell as Kael cut through them like a moving shadow. The battle only lasted a few minutes in reality, but for him it felt much longer. Every second demanded focus and strength.

Eventually the last enemy collapsed.

Silence returned to the battlefield once again.

Kael stood alone in the rain, breathing heavily while his muscles burned with exhaustion. His clothes were torn in several places and small wounds covered his arms and shoulders. But he was still standing.

[Abyss Energy Absorbed]

[Current Capacity: 30%]

The Abyss Core pulsed like a living thing inside his chest as dark energy spread through his body. Kael could feel the difference now. His strength had increased. His reflexes were sharper. Even the way he sensed the world around him felt clearer.

He slowly lowered the broken spear and looked across the battlefield. Bodies of monsters were scattered everywhere, slowly being washed by the rain. For a moment he simply stood there, letting the cold air calm his breathing.

Something inside him had changed.

He wasn't just surviving anymore.

He was growing stronger.

Kael lifted his head and looked toward the distant horizon where the fog was slowly clearing. Somewhere beyond this battlefield there was a world waiting, full of unknown dangers and powerful enemies.

But now he felt ready to face it.

Without saying anything else, Kael turned and began to walk away from the battlefield. The rain continued falling behind him while the broken land slowly disappeared into the mist.

The rain had started getting heavier by the time Kael left the battlefield behind. The wind carried the cold smell of wet soil and blood, and the dark clouds above didn't look like they were planning to clear anytime soon. Walking through the mud with tired legs wasn't easy, and every step reminded him how exhausted his body really was after the long fight.

After a while he spotted a small rocky slope ahead. A large stone formation leaned against the hillside, creating a shallow space underneath it where the rain could barely reach. It wasn't much, but right now it looked better than standing out in the storm.

Kael stepped under the rocky shelter and leaned his back against the cold stone wall. Water dripped from his hair and clothes, forming small puddles on the ground. For a few seconds he simply stood there, breathing slowly while letting his body relax.

The battlefield was finally far behind him.

Only the sound of rain filled the quiet night.

Kael looked down at his hands. They were still slightly shaking, not from fear, but from the aftereffect of the intense fight. His muscles felt heavy and warm at the same time, like they had been pushed far past their normal limits.

After a moment he let out a quiet breath.

"Alright… let's see what actually changed."

He focused his mind.

A familiar blue light appeared in front of him.

[Status Window]

Name: Kael

Level: 9

Strength: 21

Agility: 24

Endurance: 20

Perception: 18

Core: Abyss Core (Awakened)

Skills:

Shadowstep — Lv.2

Abyss Strike — Lv.1

Abyss Energy Capacity: 30%

Kael stared at the floating window for a moment, quietly reading through everything. Seeing the numbers written out like that made the change feel more real.

Level 9.

Not long ago he had been barely able to survive against simple monsters, and now he had defeated something like the Graveclaw Bear. Even he found it hard to believe sometimes.

But the numbers were not the only thing that had changed.

He slowly clenched his fist.

The movement felt… different.

Strength filled his muscles in a way he had never experienced before. It wasn't just raw power. It felt smoother, more controlled, like his body had learned how to move better.

A strange heat spread through his arms and shoulders as if the energy he absorbed earlier was still settling into his body.

Then came the deeper sensation.

The Abyss Core pulsed once inside his chest.

A wave of cold energy spread through his veins, moving slowly through every part of his body. It wasn't painful, but it was intense enough to make him inhale sharply.

It felt almost like his body was being quietly rebuilt from the inside.

His muscles tightened and relaxed again while the strange energy flowed through them. His senses sharpened slightly too. Even the sound of rain hitting the rocks outside felt clearer to him now.

Kael exhaled slowly and leaned his head back against the stone.

"So this is what leveling up actually feels like…"

He had seen the messages before, but experiencing the reward like this was something else entirely. It was not just numbers increasing. His entire body felt stronger and more responsive.

For a moment he lifted the broken spear and swung it lightly through the air.

The movement was faster than before.

Lighter.

His reflexes had improved too. He could feel it clearly.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Not bad."

The Abyss Core pulsed again, quieter this time, like it was slowly settling down after feeding on all the energy from the battlefield.

Kael looked back at the status window once more.

The skill names caught his attention.

Shadowstep had already saved him several times during the battle, and Abyss Strike was strong enough to bring down the Graveclaw Bear. If those abilities continued growing, he could only imagine how powerful they might become later.

But that also meant the enemies ahead would be stronger too.

Kael closed the window with a small thought.

The glowing screen disappeared from the air.

Outside, the rain was still falling steadily.

For now though, he had a small place to rest and a moment to breathe.

Kael slid down the rock wall and sat on the ground, letting his tired body relax for the first time since the battle started. His eyes slowly moved toward the dark forest ahead.

Somewhere beyond that forest was the world he had been thrown into.

More monsters.

More battles.

Maybe even answers.

Kael closed his eyes for a moment while listening to the rain.

"Tomorrow," he murmured quietly.

"Tomorrow we keep going."

Under the shelter of the rock, with the storm raging outside, Kael finally allowed himself a short rest.

His journey had only just begun.
