Chapter 10 - The Assassin Showing Her Skills

The sound of the school bell echoed through the hallways, signaling the end of lunch and the start of afternoon classes. Yuma followed Serena, who walked with her usual confident stride, toward the gymnasium. The sun cast warm patterns on the tiled floor, but the nervous weight in Yuma's chest made him feel like the world was glowing brighter than usual.

Outside the gym, a familiar figure waited, leaning casually against the wall with his usual teasing grin: Alumna.

"Well, well, look who's here," he said, voice laced with amusement. "The illustrious Ikaragi-kun and the ever-competitive Yuuki-san. Ready for some fun?"

Serena shot him a sharp glance, lips curling into a faint smirk. "Fun? This isn't a playground, Alumna-sensei. Let's just get this over with."

Yuma swallowed hard. His eyes scanned the gym, noting the rows of students stretching, chatting, and warming up. He felt a mix of excitement and anxiety—he wasn't sure whether he'd be able to keep up.

Alumna clapped his hands together, drawing everyone's attention. "Alright, class! Today is special. We have a new transfer student joining our ranks, so let's start with the monthly fitness test! Yuma, don't hold back—show us what you've got."

Yuma felt his stomach twist. "Monthly fitness test?" he muttered under his breath to Serena.

Serena glanced at him, expression neutral, but her eyes gleamed. "Don't worry about it, Ikaragi-kun. Just follow my lead, and remember the rules—here, we're classmates. Outside, different. Got it?"

He nodded, feeling slightly reassured, though nerves still prickled at his skin.

The first round was the sprint test, and Alumna blew the whistle. "Go!"

Serena's form was fluid, precise, and almost effortless. Yuma, on the other hand, struggled to match the pace, his muscles burning as he pushed himself to keep up. From the bleachers, Lily and Kura cheered playfully.

"Go, Serena! Don't let him catch up!" Lily called out.

"Pffft… he doesn't even stand a chance," Kura added, grinning.

Yuma's face flushed. "I… I'm trying!" he muttered, pushing harder. Sweat dripped down his forehead, and his lungs burned. He glanced at Serena, who glanced back, her expression unreadable—but her eyes hinted at a quiet encouragement, almost as if she were silently saying, you can do it, but don't expect mercy.

By the end of the sprint, Serena was clearly ahead, finishing with a smooth, confident stride. Yuma collapsed on the gym floor, chest heaving, barely able to catch his breath.

Alumna strolled over, hands clasped behind his back, a teasing smile on his face. "Well done, Serena. Outstanding as always. And you, Ikaragi-kun… not bad for a first run, though you clearly have room for improvement."

Yuma groaned, wiping sweat from his forehead. "I… I didn't realize she was… that fast…"

Serena smirked slightly, brushing a stray hair from her face. "Told you. Don't forget, I've been training for years. You're just starting out."

Next came the agility and balance tests, which involved navigating a series of cones, small hurdles, and balance beams. Serena moved like a shadow, her every step precise, graceful, and efficient. Yuma tried to mirror her, but his awkward footwork and hesitation caused him to stumble multiple times.

At one point, he slipped on a beam, flailing uncontrollably toward Serena. Reflexively, she tried to dodge—but Yuma's momentum carried him forward, and he ended up pressing against her chest.

Serena's eyes widened in shock. "Ikaragi-kun!" she shouted, slapping him lightly—more sharply than necessary—across the face. "What did I say about keeping this strictly school-appropriate? Classmates. Nothing else! Understood?!"

Yuma's face burned crimson, rubbing his cheek. "I-I… sorry! I… should've been more careful!"

Serena pointed an accusing finger at him, voice low but deadly serious. "You're lucky this is the gym and not the middle of the cafeteria. Keep your distance unless you want me to remind you… harshly, when we get home."

Yuma's eyes widened, panicking slightly. "Y-Yeah… I… I got it, Yuuki-san! I… should've kept my mouth shut!"

Alumna, watching the exchange with obvious amusement, cleared his throat. "Alright, lovebirds—uh, I mean… students, focus! Balance and precision count toward your scores!"

After several rounds, including push-ups, sit-ups, and flexibility tests, the results were clear. Serena dominated in almost every category: highest scores in flexibility, balance, mobility, and even endurance. Yuma performed moderately well, average overall, but it was clear that Serena's experience far exceeded his.

Lily, who had been observing from the sidelines, leaned over to Yuma. "Don't feel bad, Ikaragi-kun. Yuuki-san's kind of on a whole other level. She's… well… extraordinary."

Yuma muttered, slightly embarrassed. "Yeah… I… I noticed…"

Serena, noticing their side conversation, gave a subtle side glance. "She's right. Don't think this is a competition about us, though. This is for school, nothing else. Classmates. Remember?"

Yuma nodded, though he couldn't help but feel admiration—and a slight intimidation—by her prowess.

Finally, the gym bell rang, signaling the end of P.E. Alumna clapped his hands. "Great effort, everyone! Yuma, Serena, remember this isn't the end. This is just the beginning. And Yuuki-san… keep pushing him. He may surprise you yet."

Serena shot him a sharp look. "Don't push him too far, Alumna-sensei. He's mine to mentor… at home. Not in front of the class."

Yuma sighed, muttering quietly to himself as they left the gym. "I really should've kept my mouth shut… every single time…"

Serena's lips curled into a faint smirk, though her eyes held that familiar intensity. "Lesson one, Ikaragi-kun… never underestimate your partner. Lesson two… keep your distance in public."

And with that, the two walked side by side down the hallway, their silent partnership—and playful tension—solidifying even more after the trials of the gym.

The gym was alive with the sounds of sneakers squeaking against polished wood, whistles blowing, and students huffing after the latest round of fitness tests. Yuma wiped the sweat from his brow, trying to catch his breath, while Serena moved with effortless grace, stretching lightly as if she hadn't even broken a sweat.

From across the gym, murmurs spread like wildfire.

"Did you see that?!" a boy whispered to his friend, eyes wide. "She vaulted over that obstacle like it was nothing!"

"She ran the entire sprint without even slowing down!" another girl added, astonished. "And her balance… her mobility… it's unreal!"

Even the teachers couldn't help but glance toward Serena, impressed at her poise and precision. Her classmates gawked openly, a mixture of awe, envy, and disbelief in their eyes.

Yuma leaned against a wall, trying to steady his racing heartbeat. He watched Serena with quiet admiration, his thoughts a mixture of awe and understanding.

Well… yeah, he thought, a small smirk tugging at his lips. She comes from a family of assassins. Of course she'd be this skilled. Of course she'd be athletic. I should've expected this… but still… wow.

He glanced at the students around him, who were whispering and pointing. And they have no idea just how dangerous she really is…

Serena, catching glimpses of the whispers and awed expressions, allowed herself the faintest smirk. She didn't need to try to impress anyone; her movements were precise, controlled, and natural. She focused on her exercises, every stretch and jump demonstrating her superior balance and flexibility.

Alumna, standing nearby with a stopwatch in hand, chuckled lightly, clearly enjoying both the spectacle and Yuma's reactions.

"You see, Ikaragi-kun," Alumna said, leaning closer as Serena performed a flawless sequence of agility drills, "this is why she's someone to watch. Physically, mentally… she's a force. And now you get to see it firsthand."

Yuma swallowed, his admiration deepening. "Yeah… I get it now. I'm in over my head, but… somehow, I'm not scared. Just… in awe," he muttered under his breath.

The final bell rang, signaling the end of the fitness test. Some of Serena's classmates were still whispering and shaking their heads in disbelief. A few braver students approached her, wide-eyed.

"Uh… Serena… how did you train like that?!" one girl asked, clearly impressed.

Serena shrugged, a faint smile on her lips. "Just… daily practice, that's all." Her eyes flicked toward Yuma, who was watching her nervously. "And don't underestimate consistency."

Yuma, feeling slightly out of place but proud, muttered to himself, Consistency… yeah… that explains everything.

Another classmate nudged him. "Hey, Ikaragi-kun, you're sitting next to a legend. Are you okay with that?"

Yuma chuckled nervously, glancing at Serena. "Yeah… well, she's… impressive, that's all," he replied, trying to stay composed.

Serena smirked faintly, noticing his reaction. Rules, Yuma. At school, we're just classmates. She silently reminded herself.

As the students returned to their routines, Serena and Yuma walked together out of the gym, a subtle camaraderie forming between them. Yuma couldn't help but think about how intense, skilled, and focused Serena truly was—and how lucky he felt to witness it up close.

Serena, meanwhile, kept her gaze forward, hiding her pride but inwardly satisfied. They can be impressed all they want… at least he knows how to respect boundaries.
