Chapter 23 Dragonstone and Hatching

Dragon Eggs.

Words are like wind.

Especially certain specific words, they can even travel faster than the wind.

Normally, a message from Volantis to Westeros would take half a year or even a lifetime, but unfortunately, the emergence of a new Dragonlord family cannot be viewed with normal thinking.

With the transit assistance of Prince Reggio of Pentos, this message was transmitted to the westernmost part of the continent at an extremely fast speed; high-flying Ravens crossed the Narrow Sea, delivering the letter written by Prince Reggio himself to the stone castle standing on the smoking island.

Dragonstone.

"Straighten your arm, like this," Prince Daemon said, lightly tapping the boy's elbow with a wooden sword.

The boy immediately straightened his arm, and the wooden sword in his hand pierced the target in front of him precisely.

The handsome, well-built boy had thick brown hair, a flat nose, and brown eyes, but this did not detract from his handsomeness. Prince Jacaerys Velaryon had once been troubled by his lack of the Valyrian silver hair and purple eyes, but now, he could accept his different appearance with equanimity.

However, what Jacaerys was more concerned about now was how he should address the man training him, Prince Daemon Targaryen. The man who was his stepfather, his great-uncle, and his future father-in-law.

Just then, the castle's Maester hurried out of the Raven Tower and handed a letter to Daemon, who was preparing for the next stage of training.

Then Jacaerys saw his stepfather's expression change instantly. He had never seen his stepfather look like that before.

"Jacaerys, you continue training first," Daemon soothed Jacaerys, dropped the wooden sword, and quickly pulled the Maester to a corner.

"Are you sure the message is true?" Daemon asked in a cold voice.

The Maester nodded. "It's a personal letter from Prince Reggio."

"Things have become a bit tricky," Prince Daemon pondered for a moment with his hands behind his back. "Don't tell Rhaenyra yet, wait until she wakes up. Immediately send this letter to King's Landing and deliver it directly to the King."

"As you command, Your Highness."

A moment later, a cry echoed from the Dragonmont on Dragonstone.

Caraxes, slender as a snake with a blood-red body, soared into the sky and flew rapidly towards High Tide.

Rhaenyra in the castle bedroom was sleeping soundly; she was nearing her confinement and urgently needed rest, so she did not notice her husband leaving the castle on his Dragon.

"Daemon, what are you doing here?" The old black-haired Princess Rhaenys, clad in light armor and mounted on her Dragon, Meleys the Red Queen, a Dragon with red scales and bright bronze horns and spikes, watched Daemon slowly descend on a hill next to High Tide.

The old Princess Rhaenys was the daughter of Jaehaerys I's eldest son Aemon Targaryen and Jocelyn Baratheon. After Aemon and Prince Baelon the Spring Prince died successively, Jaehaerys I, having lost his heirs, decided to convene a Great Council for the Lords to decide who their next King would be. As the King's eldest granddaughter, Princess Rhaenys not only had a powerful Dragon but also the strong support of her husband, Corlys Velaryon the Sea Snake, yet she failed, and the succession to the throne ultimately went to Viserys I.

So people also called Rhaenys the "Uncrowned Queen."

"Something big has happened, Rhaenys," Daemon nimbly climbed down the rope ladder from Caraxes. The Dragon glanced at the Red Queen, then lowered its head to stare at its master.

Rhaenys also slid down from her dragon saddle smoothly. "What happened that made you lose your composure like this?"

Daemon took a deep breath. "Someone from another family has tamed Vermithor and Silverwing."

"What?"

Rhaenys stumbled, looking at Daemon in disbelief. "Are you sure?"

"I'm very sure," Daemon calmed down. "We saw Vermithor and Silverwing leave the Dragonmont before. At the time, I rode my Dragon to chase them for a while and found they were just hunting whales in the Narrow Sea, so I didn't keep following, but I didn't expect..."

"So you've come to ask me to attack with you?" Rhaenys looked at Daemon. "Can you guarantee that the two of us can kill our grandparents' Dragons?"

"I came to discuss countermeasures with you, Rhaenys," Daemon moved closer. The Red Queen immediately became alert and brought her huge head closer, snorting a puff of hot air.

Caraxes also immediately stretched out its neck and snorted at the Red Queen.

"If it were during our grandfather's reign, no, if both our fathers were alive," Rhaenys said. "If an outsider had hatched a Dragon, he would immediately ride Vermithor to kill that person and the young Dragon, but it's different now."

Daemon picked up where Rhaenys left off. "At that time, the Targaryen Family had Vermithor, Silverwing, Vhagar, Caraxes, and Meleys that could fight. But what about now?"

"Only you and I," Princess Rhaenys sighed. "Rhaenyra is pregnant, she cannot possibly ride a Dragon into battle, and her sons' Dragons are too young; I can't even guarantee they can fly across the Narrow Sea. Vhagar, hmph." The old Princess snorted coldly but continued. "Its rider just got out of bed from illness, and I'm worried he might fall off the Dragon directly."

The old Princess suddenly noticed Daemon's expression. "You know who the Dragon tamers are?"

Daemon nodded. "Of course." He took out a silver badge engraved with a pattern of a Dragon and laurel leaves. "Princess Cenilla's sons, oh, legitimate children. Dragonzel Varezes and his twin brother Valarr Varezes."

"Princess Cenilla got married?"

Daemon nodded. "She didn't want me to tell you at the time, uh, Laena knew too." Daemon lowered his head a little awkwardly.

Rhaenys was stunned for a moment, then regained her composure. "So do you have a plan?"

"This kind of thing can't be kept secret," Daemon rested his chin in his hand. "I had the Maester inform the King directly; let my indecisive brother make the final decision."

Rhaenys rolled her eyes at Daemon. "Speak properly."

"Alright, alright," Daemon raised his hands. "You win."

"The Varezes Family is also a Dragonlord family, I'm sure you know that," Daemon said.

Rhaenys nodded; she had read the family library and learned about the Forty Dragonlords of the past.

"Now that the Targaryen Family has a monopoly on Dragon eggs, even the bloodlines of the Dragonlord families within the Black Wall cannot access Dragon eggs or riderless Dragons," Daemon continued. "So it must not have been simple for those brothers to tame Dragons."

"Valyrian Ruins?" Rhaenys reacted immediately. "Impossible."

"Anything is possible," Daemon said. "Regardless of the King's final decision, it will definitely be the two of us who interact with them."

Rhaenys agreed; dealing with Dragonriders requires only Dragonriders.

"We cannot confirm what they have obtained," Daemon raised his hand. "We cannot afford the risk of losing a Dragon that can fight. So we must handle this matter cautiously."

"Are you trying to win them over?" Rhaenys decided to enlighten her cousin. "Do you think a brand new Dragonlord family would be willing to submit to another Dragonlord family?"

Daemon suddenly smiled.

On the Silent Lord.

The young men stared wide-eyed at the broken Dragon egg in front of Ray.

And a young Dragon, the size of a small cat, completely black, squealing loudly.

"Can someone explain to me what happened?"

Dragonzel looked at his youngest brother in shock.

Vermithor and Silverwing, circling in the sky, also lowered their heads to look at the young Dragon.

Without any warning, the young Dragon suddenly leaped up and hid inside Ray's clothes.

Ray, blushing, explained incoherently.

"I don't know what happened, it's just, just on the way back, this black Dragon egg started glowing, and then it was like this, and that, and then it cracked with a 'kacha' sound, and then it was like this."

Ray fumbled to pull the young Dragon out of his clothes. Then he got a face full of warm saliva from the slightly slimy young Dragon.

"Congratulations, Ray," Dragonzel covered his face. "You have your own Dragon too."

"Give it a name, brother," Valarr excitedly leaned closer, wanting to see the young Dragon's appearance clearly.

Then he was elegantly sprayed with a puff of smoke.

"A name..."
