Chapter 67 - Field Trip 7

They went over the wall.

Roan first, because he was the tallest. He braced both hands flat against the top of the planking, pulled himself up in one motion, swung his leg over, and dropped to the dirt on the outside with a quiet thud. Sinda and Tavia followed easily. Eva was slowest. Her wings made the climb awkward and she had to rotate her shoulders to clear the lip.

Katarina went last.

The kitchen-loop guards were still in the trees. Forty seconds, maybe fifty, before they came back. She put her boot on the lower seam where the planking met the stone, pushed up, caught the top, and dropped.

Her feet hit the ground. The five of them stood in the strip of open ground between the lanterns of the camp and the dark line of trees twenty feet away.

"Go," Katarina whispered.

They went.

Tavia led. Her eyes caught the lantern light at the edge of the trees and reflected once before they were inside the dark.
