"Somebody made me an offer, you know." Duscari was still grinning. "About you, actually."
Kat set her cup down and waited. She'd learned a long time ago that the fastest way to make someone talk was to shut up and let the silence do the work.
It worked. Duscari turned her cup around in her hands a couple times, then started talking.
"I was doing prep this morning. Unloading the carts, getting the bottles sorted, you know, the boring part." She waved a hand at the row of crates behind the stall. "And this polite little human comes up to me. He asked if I was the wine merchant working with the Montecardi girl, and when I said yeah, he got real friendly about it."
"Black Lotus," Kat said.
"He never said it out loud, but he didn't have to." Duscari made a face. "I've sold wine to enough sect people to know the type. They've all got that same smile, like they're doing you a favor just by talking to you."
