Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 — The Weight Of Silence

**Chapter 16 — The Weight of Silence**

The cave felt smaller as the night deepened.

Liora lay on her side, facing the rough stone wall, but sleep refused to come. Her body was exhausted from days of running, yet her mind would not settle. Every small sound outside — the rustle of leaves, the distant call of night birds — made her tense.

Cairis sat a short distance away, his back against the opposite wall. He hadn't moved much since they settled in. His presence filled the space, heavy and impossible to ignore.

Liora turned slowly onto her back and stared at the ceiling. The strange warmth from earlier still lingered under her skin, not as intense as before, but steady. It made her feel overly aware of her own breathing, of the cool air against her face, and of the demon sitting only a few feet from her.

She whispered into the darkness, "Are you awake?"

"Yes," Cairis answered, his voice low and steady. "Why aren't you sleeping?"

"I can't. My body hurts everywhere, but my mind won't stop. I keep thinking about Blackthorn Reach, about Nyxara, about how close we came to being caught." She paused, then added quietly, "And about this feeling that won't go away."

Cairis was silent for a long moment. "The power you took is settling. It will keep you restless until you learn to manage it."

Liora turned her head slightly toward him. In the faint moonlight filtering through the vines at the entrance, she could just make out the sharp lines of his horns and the outline of his broad shoulders.

"It's not only the power," she said softly. "When you touched my hand earlier… it felt like fire moving through me. Not painful, but… too much. It made my heart race and my skin feel too sensitive. I don't understand why it happens."

Cairis shifted his position, leaning forward a little. His voice remained calm but carried a darker edge. "Because our essences are no longer completely separate. Every time we are near each other, every time we touch, even briefly, it stirs things that were never meant to mix. Mortal shadow and abyssal power."

Liora swallowed. "I don't like feeling out of control. I've always been careful with my magic. Small spells. Simple protections. This… this feels wild. Like something inside me is waking up and I don't know how to stop it."

She heard Cairis move. He stood and walked over, then lowered himself to sit closer — close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from his body, but not touching her.

"Look at me," he said quietly.

Liora turned her head. Their eyes met in the dim light. His gaze was intense, almost predatory, yet he made no move to close the distance.

"You are afraid of what you feel," he continued. "That fear is natural. But fighting it will only make the sensations stronger. The power inside you responds to emotion. To proximity. To me."

Liora's cheeks warmed. She looked away again, focusing on the stone wall. "When you say things like that, it makes me even more nervous. I'm still scared of you, Cairis. You could kill me without effort. Yet part of me feels… drawn. Like my body wants to be closer even when my mind tells me to stay away."

Cairis stayed quiet for several heartbeats. When he spoke again, his voice was lower, almost rough. "That pull is real. It will grow with time. Not tonight. Not tomorrow. But soon, being near me will feel both comforting and dangerous. You will crave the strength it gives you, even as you fear what it asks in return."

Liora pulled her cloak tighter around herself, though the cave wasn't particularly cold. "I don't want to crave anything from you. I just want to survive this. To find a way to fix what I broke without losing myself completely."

Cairis leaned back against the wall again, but he didn't move farther away. The space between them felt smaller than it had earlier.

"Sleep," he said after a while. "Tomorrow will be another long day. We need to put more distance between us and Blackthorn Reach."

Liora closed her eyes, but the warmth under her skin refused to fade completely. She was painfully aware of how close he was — the slow, steady rhythm of his breathing, the faint scent of smoke and metal that clung to him, the way his presence seemed to wrap around her even without touch.

She whispered one last time, barely audible, "Will it get easier?"

Cairis's answer came soft and honest. "No. It will only become more difficult. But you will learn to live with it."

The cave fell silent once more.

Liora lay there for a long time, caught between fear and the slow, undeniable pull she could no longer pretend wasn't there.

Outside, the forest whispered. Inside, something between them was quietly, dangerously shifting.

And for the first time, Liora wondered how long she could keep fighting it.
