Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 — A World That Doesn’t Forgive

The night didn't last forever.

It only felt like it did.

By the time dawn broke—

They were far from the palace.

Far from the kingdom.

Far from anything that had once felt familiar.

Liora stood at the edge of a jagged cliff, the wind pulling sharply at her clothes.

Below—

A vast, fractured land stretched endlessly.

Not smooth plains.

Not gentle hills.

But something harsher.

Broken.

Layered.

Alive in a way that felt… wrong.

"…This isn't part of the Demon Kingdom."

Her voice was quiet.

Observing.

Cairis stepped beside her.

"No."

A pause.

"…Then where are we?"

His gaze scanned the horizon.

"The borderlands."

The world below looked like it had been split apart and never healed.Fragments of land floated in the distance.Thin streams of glowing energy ran like veins through the earth. Some places burned faintly red.Others shimmered silver. And in between—Shadows moved. Not creatures. Not quite.Just… movement.Unnatural.Unpredictable.Liora's eyes narrowed slightly."…It feels unstable.""It is."Cairis's voice remained calm. But his eyes were alert."This is where realms overlap."She glanced at him."…Overlap?"The Structure of the WorldCairis didn't look at her as he spoke. His attention remained on the horizon."…The world isn't whole."Liora crossed her arms slightly."…That's obvious.""No."A pause."It was broken."Silence.Her expression sharpened."…When?"Cairis's voice lowered slightly."…During the war."Her chest tightened."…My war.""Yes."That word again.Heavy.Unavoidable.He gestured toward the distance."The Demon Kingdom is only one realm.""There are others."Liora followed his gaze."…How many?""Five major ones."He began listing them. The Five Realms The Demon Kingdom Ruled by power and bloodlines

Strength determines status

Where Cairis is from

The Celestial DominionBeings of light and order

Opposes demonic energy

Seeks balance—or control

"…They will not welcome you," Cairis added.Liora let out a quiet breath."…I'm not surprised."  The Spirit Realm was Where souls and ancient entities exist

Time behaves differently

Where Azhrael's influence is strongest

Liora's fingers tightened slightly."…I remember that place.""Then you know to avoid it.""…I don't think it's going to avoid me."Then  The Mortal Lands Human kingdoms

Political and fragile

Often caught between larger powers

"They're weaker," Cairis said."But unpredictable."And The Void Territories Not truly a "realm"

Exists between all others

Where reality breaks

Liora's expression darkened."…That sounds worse than everything else.""It is."Magic Systems — The Truth Behind Power Liora looked down at her hand.Silver light flickered faintly."…And this?"Cairis finally looked at her."…Magic comes from different sources."He stepped closer.Closer than necessary. But neither of them moved away."There are three primary types." Core Magic Natural to a being (demons, celestials, humans)

Stable

Predictable

"That's what most people use." Borrowed Power Taken from spirits, contracts, or entities

Stronger—but risky

Can corrupt the user

Liora's expression tightened slightly."…That sounds familiar.""Yes." Primordial Power Silence. The air shifted slightly.Even the wind felt different."…That's what you have."Liora didn't respond immediately."…And that means?"Cairis's voice dropped."…It doesn't belong to this world."Her chest tightened."…Of course it doesn't.""It can override other forms of magic.""It evolves.""It doesn't follow rules."A pause."…And it destroys its user if they lose control."Silence.Because that That was the part she already knew. The Borderlands — Why It Matters Liora looked out at the broken land again."…So why are we here?""Because this is the only place where all powers exist at once."Her eyes sharpened."…Meaning?""If you want control—"He met her gaze."…this is where you learn it."Silence.The weight of that settled slowly.Dangerous.Unstable.Unforgiving.Perfect.Liora exhaled slowly."…So this place can either help me—""Or kill you.""Right."A small pause. Then—"…I like the odds."Cairis studied her for a moment."…You shouldn't.""Probably not."A faint smirk appeared."…But here we are."The wind shifted again.Stronger this time.Carrying something new.A sound.Distant.Low.Not natural.Cairis's expression changed instantly.Sharp.Alert."…We're not alone."Liora's silver light flickered instinctively."…Already?""Yes."A pause."…Welcome to the Borderlands."Far below—Something moved. Not shadows this time.Something real.Something watching.
