Chapter 12 - The Chains of the Sovereign

Chapter 12

For a moment, Kael could not move.

The golden circle burned across the black stone floor, its light spreading outward in glowing lines that stretched across the chamber walls and pillars. Symbols covered the ground beneath Ariana's feet, pulsing with power that filled the entire space. She stood at the center.

Golden light wrapped around her body, forming chains that moved like something alive. They tightened around her wrists, her shoulders, and her throat every time the power surged. Ariana trembled as she saw him.

"Kael…"

Her voice was barely above a whisper, but it hit him hard. His wolf reacted instantly, slamming against him with violent force. Break them. Break everything. Kael's gaze snapped toward the man standing beside her.

He was tall and calm, dressed in black and gold, completely unaffected by the chaos around him. His posture was relaxed, as if everything happening was expected. He studied Kael with quiet interest.

"Ah," the man said. "The Alpha."

Kael's voice dropped. "Let her go."

The man didn't move. Instead, he tilted his head slightly.

"You crossed the barrier," he said calmly. "Impressive."

Kael stepped forward. The chains tightened immediately. Ariana gasped as the light burned against her skin.

Kael froze. Rage surged through him.

"What did you do to her?"

The man gave a faint smile. "Protected her."

Ariana shook her head weakly. "That's not"

The chains tightened again, cutting her off. Pain flashed across her face. Kael's control slipped.

"Touch her again," he said, his voice low and dangerous, "and I will tear this entire city apart."

The man watched him with interest. "You would destroy this place for one woman?"

"Yes."

There was no hesitation. For a moment, something like respect crossed the man's face.

"Remarkable."

Ariana forced herself to stand straighter despite the chains. "Stop talking like I'm not here," she said.

Her eyes glowed brighter. The chains reacted instantly, tightening around her wrists again. Pain crossed her face.

That was enough. Kael moved.

The moment he stepped into the circle, power slammed into him. He was thrown backward and crashed into a pillar. The impact shook the chamber.

Ariana cried out. "Stop!"

The man sighed. "I warned you."

Kael pushed himself up slowly. Blood ran from his lip, but he didn't care.

"You're going to regret that."

The man stepped closer to the edge of the circle. "You don't understand the situation."

Kael wiped the blood from his mouth. "Do I not?"

He gestured toward Ariana. "She is not your prisoner."

Kael looked at the chains around her throat. "Looks like one."

"She is awakening."

Ariana shook her head. "I don't want this."

The man's voice softened slightly. "It isn't about what you want."

Kael stepped forward again, slower this time. "That works both ways."

The chamber fell quiet. The light around Ariana pulsed again, stronger than before. The symbol beneath her flared, spreading outward. Five lines extended from the center. Four curved outward. One rose straight up.

The man looked at it with satisfaction. "Perfect timing."

Kael's wolf growled. "What are you doing?"

The man turned toward him. "Finishing what the council tried to erase."

Ariana shook her head. "No."

"Yes."

The man raised his hand. The chains lifted Ariana slightly off the ground. Her body shook as power surged through her. Kael felt it through the bond. Pain.

"Ariana!"

Her eyes snapped to him. "Don't…"

"The Sovereign must awaken fully," the man said.

Kael's chest tightened. "Sovereign?"

"The ruler of all bloodlines."

Ariana shook her head weakly. "I don't want to rule anyone."

"That has never mattered."

The golden light grew stronger.Behind her, wings formed again, made of pure energy. They spread across the chamber, filling the space with light.

Kael could feel the power building through the floor. If this continued, something would change.Something permanent.

"Stop this," Kael said.

The man ignored him and focused on Ariana. "Do you feel it?"

A faint crown flickered above her head.

"Yes," she whispered.

"What do you feel?"

Ariana's voice shook. "Everything."

Images flooded her mind. Battles. Kingdoms rising. People bowing. A throne made of gold.

"I can't control it."

"You're not meant to control it," the man said. "You're meant to command it."

Kael moved again. Slowly this time.

"Ariana."

Her eyes found his.The moment they locked, the bond reacted. The chains flickered. The man noticed immediately. His expression changed.

"Interesting."

Kael took another step. "Ariana."

Her breathing steadied slightly. The chains weakened.

"You're stronger than this," Kael said.

The man's voice sharpened. "She must not lose focus."

Ariana shook slightly. "I can hear them."

"Who?"

"All of them."

The light surged again.

"Every bloodline."

"That's enough," Kael said.

He stepped into the circle, and grabbed her hand. Power exploded through the chamber. But this time, something changed. The chains didn't tighten. They broke. One after another, the golden restraints shattered.

The man stared. "That should not be possible."

Kael pulled Ariana into his arms. "You're done with her."

For the first time, the man looked unsettled.

"You've disrupted the awakening."

"Good."

"You don't understand what you've done."

Ariana looked up at Kael. "What did we do?"

The man's voice lowered. "You started it."

The symbol on the floor erupted with light. The entire mountain shook.

Cracks spread across the stone. Dust fell from above. Outside the chamber, horns began to sound again. But this time, they weren't coming from inside the city. They came from beyond the mountains. The man turned toward the doors, his expression changing.

"No…"

Kael frowned. "What now?"

The man spoke quietly. "You weren't the only one who felt the Sovereign awaken."

Kael's stomach tightened. "Who else?"

Before he could answer, a roar echoed across the mountains. It was deep and heavy, not wolf and not vampire, but something older and far more dangerous. The man closed his eyes briefly.

"They're here."

Kael tightened his hold on Ariana. "Who?"

The man opened his eyes again. And this time, he looked afraid.

"The ones who killed the first Sovereign."
