Chapter 97 - Chapter 97: Sourness in the Heart

As time passed, the communication between the few of them became more and more tacit, and the atmosphere grew increasingly harmonious.

Zoe silently took on the role of logistics support, handing over water or coffee at the appropriate times.

Meanwhile, Tracy remained very busy with constant phone calls; he needed to plan the future distribution channels for this song while also coordinating the upcoming time conflicts Landon would face between his roles as a singer and an actor.

Jon's trio brought a strong Southern Crunk musical energy and a heavy rhythmic foundation.

And Landon, as the song's original architect, had a clear intuition for the melodic progression and the song's layering.

Whenever the arrangement hit a stalemate, it was often a softly spoken suggestion from Landon that broke the deadlock.

"Maybe the synthesizer here could be a bit more airy?" or "Go straight into the chorus after the second verse, without a pre-chorus; wouldn't the impact be stronger?"

He could always accurately point out the right direction.

Jon would squint his eyes and listen, his fingers tapping an imaginary beat in the air, before suddenly clapping his hands: "Yes! That's it! Bro, you're amazing!" Then came a loud high-five.

Two whole days of clashing ideas, experimenting, and even tearing everything down to start over.

When the final version of "Yeah!" blasted from the giant monitor speakers, with its perfect blend of raw Southern street wildness and pop melody, everyone was incredibly excited, hugging and celebrating with one another.

Landon rubbed his tired eyes, looking at his partners who were dancing with excitement and celebrating with street slang; for the first time, he truly and relaxedly laughed.

The differences in cultural shells disintegrated before a common musical language, leaving only the most direct creative passion and a song that was about to sweep the globe.

The two days of intensive creation over the weekend made time fly by.

During the day in the recording studio, every minute and every second was filled with rhythms, melodies, and repeated adjustments;

But at night, back at the hotel, another silent yet more exhausting battle would begin.

For Zoe, these two nights felt exceptionally long.

Although she wasn't in the same suite as Landon and Tracy, the distance of just a single wall meant that all sounds lost their barrier.

When she tried to fall asleep, those highly piercing sound waves penetrated the walls, so clear it felt as if they were being performed right in her ear.

She just didn't understand why the "performance" next door could last for so long.

Round after round, as if it would never end.

In the end, Zoe didn't even have the energy to get up and Shower.

This directly resulted in Zoe having to spend an extra half hour in front of the vanity mirror the next morning. She used heavy makeup to cover her dark circles.

When she finally finished getting ready and walked to Landon's suite, she saw Tracy already sitting in the living room, looking radiant, discussing the day's schedule in a low voice with Landon.

The morning light spilled through the floor-to-ceiling windows onto Tracy; her skin was smooth, her eyes were bright, and her whole being radiated a full glow from being thoroughly nourished.

Looking at that glowing face, Zoe felt a strong sense of unfairness welling up in her heart.

Clearly, their sleep time was about the same, so why was there such a huge difference in their states?

She suddenly thought of those noon hours on the set of 24 hours; Elisha was the same way, her face carrying an indescribable luster and satisfaction.

When her gaze met Landon's, the unconscious resentment in her eyes made Landon startle slightly.

He confirmed that he hadn't offended this assistant; he had no clue, so where was this resentment coming from?

Landon could only attribute it to the inscrutability of women and put it out of his mind for the time being.

On Monday morning, Tracy bid Landon a satisfied farewell kiss and set off back to Los Angeles to handle follow-up matters.

Lil Jon's trio had also left beforehand; they needed to return to their studio in Atlanta to refine and mix the version of "Yeah!" completed over the weekend.

Regarding the specific contract terms for the single's release, Tracy would represent Landon in formal negotiations with So So Def Records.

At the same time, plans for the subsequent music video shoot were put on the agenda.

Both Landon and Lil Jon held great expectations for this song; they hoped to use the impact of a music video to further strengthen the success of "Yeah!".

However, the shoot could only be scheduled for next weekend. Landon's movie filming schedule could not be easily disrupted.

Landon left these matters to Tracy. After saying goodbye to Tracy, he took his still resentful-looking assistant Zoe and drove back to the set of A Beautiful Mind.

Once back in the familiar atmosphere of the production crew, Landon felt that time had returned to normal.

The actors were either resting with their eyes closed or whispering their lines, while staff members bustled between them; everything was in perfect order.

The door to Jennifer Connelly's dressing room was slightly ajar.

When Landon pushed the door open and entered, he saw her sitting in front of the mirror as a Makeup Artist carefully drew her eyeliner.

Seeing Landon's figure in the mirror after he'd been gone for two days, Jennifer's eyes held complex emotions—there was joy at seeing him, but also the resentment of being abandoned over the weekend.

But she said nothing, only locking eyes with him through the mirror for a few seconds before blinking gently, signaling the Makeup Artist to continue.

Landon read that silent resentment and felt a slight pang of apology in his heart.

He pulled over a chair and sat down beside her, quietly watching the Makeup Artist work.

Jennifer had an important scene this morning—Nash and Alicia's first date.

It would be one of the most beautiful scenes in the movie: Nash holding Alicia, both looking up at the starry sky, as Nash traces a heart shape in the night sky with his hand; a moment later, the stars across the sky actually converge into a twinkling heart.

Landon remembered this classic sequence.

In the original movie, this scene perfectly combined romantic imagination with mathematical romance, becoming a classic moment in the hearts of countless viewers.

Now, watching Jennifer gradually transform into the likeness of Alicia in the mirror, Landon felt a strange sensation.

However, when filming officially began and Landon stood behind the monitor watching Jennifer and Russell Crowe perform that sweet interaction in front of the lens, a subtle sour feeling still quietly crept into his heart.

Watching the person he liked embracing, gazing at, and sharing that magical movie moment so intimately with another man—even knowing it was just a movie—Landon had to admit he felt a bit uneasy.

This was the reality of the industry.

Intimacy in front of the lens and reality behind it are often two parallel lines that never intersect.

As an actor, you must strip away your own emotions and become a vessel for the character;

And as a person, you cannot completely isolate yourself from those projections and transferences.

Landon leaned back against his chair and took a deep breath.

He knew clearly that he was currently just a "nobody" who had just started out and needed to grasp every opportunity.

He had no right and no ability to change the rules of the game, and he didn't even have the standing to express that tiny, insignificant bit of jealousy.

Perhaps only when one day he possessed enough influence and say would he be able to truly choose, shape, and protect the people and things he cared about according to his own will.

This thought was like a seed, quietly buried in the depths of his heart.

On the monitor, the Nash played by Russell Crowe was clumsily yet sincerely tracing his hand toward the night sky, while the Alicia played by Jennifer leaned into his embrace, her eyes sparkling with moving radiance.

After the director shouted "Cut," the two quickly separated, and staff stepped forward to adjust the lighting and camera positions for the next shot.

Landon withdrew his gaze and turned toward his own rest area. Zoe was already there with warm water and the upcoming script ready.

She glanced at Landon, and the resentment in her eyes seemed to have faded slightly, replaced by a touch of understanding.
