Chapter 174 - Note

Translator's Note:

Hello, everyone,

Many of you have probably felt it—the story is losing its bite, the darkness that made it so compelling is fading. I looked into Korean Naver forums to understand why, and here's what I found.

The original web novel was brutally dark, unflinching in its violence and horror. But the manhwa adaptation ran into immediate trouble. Volume 1 pushed the boundaries of gore and explicit content so far that chapters were going to be censored, flagged, or heavily edited. Panels would be blurred or cut entirely.

To keep the comic hosted and monetized, the author and production team are going to improvise. The raw, chaotic edge of Volume 1 would be removed in webtoon. From Volume 2 onward, the story would be shifting toward psychological games, political schemes, and the carefully controlled appearance of justice.

Volume 1 was fast-paced and unrestrained, so Volume 2 is going to slow down intentionally.

The production company wants a literal psychopath to navigate a world of lies, deception, and false righteousness. The pacing is going to shift, the action is going to be restrained, and the author is going to temper the MC's violent brilliance.

Later volumes of the novel are being rewritten—or even retroactively edited—to introduce moral counterweights: justice, sects, or villains even worse than the MC. The chaotic, pure darkness of the protagonist is being molded into a conventional dark anti-hero. Foil characters are introduced to force him to operate within a system of lies, turning his malice into strategy instead of unbridled carnage.

Murim stories usually pit good versus evil, with the Orthodox factions representing justice. Now, the story is going to highlight justice so heavily that it's going to reshape Bong-su into a "righteous" figure.

The narrative would become a psychological reflection: who is truly monstrous—the self-aware psychopath, or the so-called righteous who manipulate and kill in the name of justice?

Gon Bung has said that staying too dark would risk losing platform incentives and his webtoon contract. 🤷
