A freezing ray ripped across the starry sky. The ice-blue beam shot through the void from a distant point, cutting straight toward the figures gathered near Ronan.
The attack arrived with terrifying speed, so fast that most people present could barely react. Just as the ray was about to strike, a golden-haired figure stepped forward.
Captain Marvel rose into the vacuum.
Her blonde hair flowed behind her as cosmic energy surged through her body, and her delicate face glowed with dazzling brilliance. Golden light spread outward from her hands, illuminating the battlefield like a miniature sun.
"Back off!"
She thrust both arms forward and unleashed a powerful wave of energy. The brilliant golden blast collided directly with the incoming freezing ray.
Boom!
The two forces smashed into each other violently.
A massive explosion erupted where they met, sending waves of destructive energy rippling across the star field. The shockwave blasted away drifting debris and fragments of wrecked warships.
Even Captain Marvel was pushed backward several steps.
"This power…"
Carol Danvers narrowed her eyes, clearly surprised. Very few beings in the universe could meet her cosmic energy head-on.
"Interesting."
Far away in the star field, Ethan Drake watched the exchange with open curiosity. A playful smile appeared on his face as the battle spirit in his eyes intensified.
"Last time I solved the problem for you," he said calmly. "But it won't be so easy this time."
In the next moment, the cells throughout his body awakened further.
His Kryptonian physiology instinctively absorbed the cosmic radiation surrounding them, drawing power from the endless energy of the universe. At the same time, the frost within his eyes grew even stronger.
Whoosh!
A freezing ray thicker than the previous one burst from his pupils. The beam shot across the void like a spear forged from ice, racing straight toward Captain Marvel.
"Damn it."
Carol's expression changed instantly.
"How did he suddenly become so much stronger?"
Her voice carried genuine seriousness now. She no longer dared to hold back.
Golden light erupted from her body as if a celestial warrior had descended onto the battlefield. Captain Marvel gathered cosmic energy between her palms and fired another radiant blast toward the incoming freezing ray.
Bang!
The golden beam collided with the icy blue ray once more.
For a brief moment the two attacks balanced perfectly, like the tip of a needle pressing against the edge of a blade. Golden light and icy frost intertwined in space, creating a mesmerizing display of energy.
But the stalemate lasted only seconds.
Gradually, the freezing ray began pushing forward.
The frost-filled energy shattered the golden blast and continued toward its target.
Boom!
The remaining energy struck Carol directly. Her body was thrown backward through space as if she had been hit by a speeding train.
In this clash of raw power, she had clearly fallen behind.
"You take Ronan and leave," Carol said quickly.
A thin line of blood appeared at the corner of her mouth, but golden light immediately surged across her body again. Within seconds the injuries vanished completely.
"I'll catch up with you later."
"Captain Marvel, but—"
Members of the interstellar task force hesitated.
They had expected this mission to be another routine cleanup operation. Instead, they had walked into a battlefield where even their strongest leader was under pressure.
"Go," Carol said firmly. "You'll only slow me down if you stay."
Her tone left no room for argument.
The task force exchanged uneasy glances before retreating toward their warship. Moments later the long, sword-shaped vessel accelerated away from the battlefield, carrying the severely injured Ronan with it.
Meanwhile, Ethan flew forward calmly from the distance.
He didn't even bother watching the Kree ship escape. His eyes remained locked on the blonde woman floating ahead of him.
"Carol?" he said slowly.
His extraordinary hearing had caught the earlier conversation.
Carol's aura continued rising as cosmic energy gathered around her body.
"So you know my name," she said cautiously. "The new Kryptonian Superman… have you heard of me before?"
Ethan sighed quietly.
"Yes."
He studied the woman in front of him carefully.
Blonde hair.
Blue eyes.
A tall, graceful figure with delicate features and skin as pale as snow. Her beauty was striking enough to rival any famous actress.
Before arriving in this universe, Ethan had once seen trailers for a film about Captain Marvel. Back then, he had been rather critical of the casting choice, and many people online had jokingly called that version "Aunt Marvel."
But the real woman standing before him was completely different.
She was powerful, radiant, and breathtaking.
Still—
"You're working for the Kree Empire," Ethan said calmly. "Do you even know who you really are?"
Carol's expression tightened.
"What are you talking about?"
At that moment, unfamiliar memories flickered through her mind.
A blue planet.
A military academy under a fading sunset.
A fighter jet roaring through the sky.
Scene after scene flashed before her eyes before disappearing again.
"Damn it…"
Over the past few years these images had surfaced repeatedly. Carol had tried many times to uncover their meaning, but every attempt had failed.
Her past remained a blank void.
"Who are you?" she asked warily. "How do you know about this?"
Ethan chuckled softly.
"So you really don't remember."
Carol Danvers had once been an Air Force pilot from Earth. An accident involving alien technology had transformed her into one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy.
But the Kree Empire had manipulated her memories and turned her into their weapon.
At this moment, Carol was still trapped inside that deception.
Ethan clenched his fists.
Crack!
His joints popped sharply.
Looking at the beautiful blonde warrior floating before him, a confident smile appeared on his face.
"Don't worry," he said calmly.
"I'll beat the truth back into you."
