Chapter 62 - The Morning It Changed

The palace noticed.

Not because anything was announced.

Because Malik walked through the morning corridor

and his face was different.

Courts are built on reading faces.

By midday everyone knew.

She found out from the kitchen girl.

The girl — seventeen, copper-haired, assigned to the east wing morning rounds — arrived with the tea tray at the ninth hour and set it on the desk with the specific careful attention of someone who was concentrating very hard on not doing something.

Not smiling.

She was concentrating very hard on not smiling.

Nora looked at her.

"What is it?" she said.

The girl looked at the tray. "Nothing, Miss Atwood."

"You're trying not to smile," Nora said.

The girl pressed her lips together. "I'm not—"

"You are," Nora said. "What has happened that you're trying not to smile about?"

A pause.

The girl looked up. Her composure failed completely.

"Cook says," she said, in the rapid way of someone releasing information under pressure, "that Aldric ordered the occasion wine last night. And Bennet — he's the second corridor guard — says His Majesty walked past him this morning and said good morning and Bennet nearly fell over because His Majesty never says good morning to corridor guards and his face was — Bennet said his face was — different. And everyone in the kitchen is saying—" She stopped.

"What is everyone in the kitchen saying?" Nora said.

The girl looked at her with the bright eyes of someone about to say a thing.

"That you're the reason," she said. "That whatever is different about his face is because of you."

The kitchen girl left.

Nora sat at her desk.

She looked at the tea.

The entire household staff knows, she thought. Before I've finished my morning tea.

She picked up the cup.

Well, she thought. All right then.

She drank her tea.

He was in the west study when she found him.

She came in without knocking — she had stopped knocking on the west study door three weeks ago and he had not commented on it — and sat in the chair across from him.

He looked up.

"The kitchen knows," she said.

He set down his pen. "Already?"

"Bennet the corridor guard told Cook," she said. "Cook told everyone."

"What did Bennet tell Cook?" he said.

"That your face was different this morning," she said.

He looked at her.

"My face," he said.

"Bennet's word was different," she said. "I believe the kitchen's word was — happy."

A pause.

Something moved in his expression — not the controlled fractional thing. The real movement of someone receiving information about themselves that they are not going to argue with.

"Happy," he said.

"Yes," she said.

He looked at his desk for a moment.

Then he looked back at her.

"Is that a problem?" he said.

She considered this honestly.

"No," she said. "I just thought you should know before Lord Harven mentions it in council."

He almost smiled. "Lord Harven will mention it in council."

"Almost certainly," she said.

"And you're not concerned," he said.

"About Lord Harven mentioning your face in council?" she said. "No."

He looked at her steadily.

"About any of it," he said. "The court knowing. The staff knowing. All of it becoming — official in the way that things become official when everyone knows."

She looked at him.

"Malik," she said. "I didn't kneel in the marketplace. I called your invitation kidnapping to your face. I told you in front of your senior council that we were going to discuss the part where you didn't ask me." She paused. "I am not concerned about people knowing."

He looked at her for a long moment.

"No," he said. "Of course you're not."

"Are you?" she said.

He was quiet for a moment.

"No," he said. "I'm not concerned. I'm — aware. Of the implications. The political ones." He paused. "Vaeren will use it."

"Vaeren will try to use everything," she said. "That's what Vaeren does. It doesn't mean we manage our lives around what Vaeren might try."

He looked at her.

"No," he said. "It doesn't."

She stood.

"The corridor guard told Cook," she said. "By tomorrow the guild quarter will know. By next week my aunt Sera will write me a letter with aggressive punctuation asking why she had to find out from the fishmonger." She moved to the door. "I suggest we simply — continue."

"Continue," he said.

"Being exactly what we are," she said. "Without announcement. Without management. The court will draw its own conclusions and those conclusions will be correct and that will be the end of it."

He looked at her.

"You make it sound simple," he said.

"It is simple," she said. "We're making it simple by not making it complicated." She paused at the door. "I'll be in the library."

"I'll come at the second hour," he said.

"I know," she said. "Bring the northern trade documentation. I've been thinking about the third clause again."

She left.

She walked back to the library.

She sat in her chair.

She thought about the kitchen girl's bright eyes. That you're the reason. That whatever is different about his face is because of you.

She looked at the fire.

She was, she noted with complete honesty, not managing the warmth of that.

She wasn't managing anything.

She picked up her book.

She read.

At the midday hour Lady Mira appeared in the library doorway with the expression of someone who had been waiting to appear since the seventh hour and had exercised considerable restraint.

"The archive," Mira said.

"Good morning, Mira," Nora said.

"Last night," Mira said. "The archive. You and His Majesty."

Nora set down her book. "Who told you?"

"Aldric lit the lamps himself," Mira said. "The archive lamps. He never lights the archive lamps. The archivist lights the archive lamps." She came fully into the room and sat. "And this morning His Majesty walked past three council members in the corridor and two of them independently described his expression as — I'm quoting — unrecognizable."

Nora said nothing.

"Nora," Mira said.

"Yes," Nora said.

"Something happened," Mira said. "In the archive."

"Yes," Nora said.

Mira looked at her.

"Are you going to tell me?" Mira said.

"No," Nora said.

Mira looked at her for a long moment.

Then she sat back.

"But you're — all right," she said. "You're more than all right."

"Yes," Nora said.

Mira looked at her — the frank honest assessment of someone who had been watching Nora for two months and knew what her expressions meant.

"Good," Mira said quietly. "That's — genuinely good."

"Yes," Nora said. "It is."

Mira stood to go.

"One thing," Nora said.

Mira stopped.

"There will be talk," Nora said. "There is already talk. It will increase. Some of it will be unkind."

"Yes," Mira said.

"I'm not asking you to manage it," Nora said. "I'm not asking you to defend me. I'm asking you to tell me — accurately, promptly — what the talk is. So I know what's being said and by whom."

Mira looked at her.

"You're going to let it happen," Mira said. "And watch it."

"I'm going to understand it," Nora said. "There's a difference."

Mira nodded.

"I'll tell you," she said. "Everything. Accurately."

"Thank you," Nora said.

Mira left.

Nora looked at the fire.

The court is watching, she thought. They were already watching. Now they're watching something specific.

Good, she thought.

Let them watch.

They'll see exactly what I am.

That has never been the problem.

She picked up her book.

Outside the library windows the city went about its afternoon.

Inside the library a merchant's daughter read her book and drank her tea and waited for the second hour when he would come with the northern trade documentation and they would sit at the table and work through the third clause and it would be exactly the same as it had always been.

And completely, quietly, permanently different.
