Chapter 42 - Chapter 42:When the system breaks

Chapter 42: When the System Breaks

Tovin hated uncertainty.

Not in the way others did.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

He hated it because it made things… incomplete.

Unresolved.

And unresolved things

Couldn't be controlled.

He stood again.

Across from Kade.

The fractured world already shifting—

Already breaking every pattern he tried to establish.

"…Again," Kade said.

Tovin didn't respond.

He was already thinking.

Tracking movement.

Measuring distance.

Predicting variables.

The ground split.

Fragments drifting at uneven speeds.

Gravity twisting.

Angles collapsing into impossibility.

Tovin's eyes moved constantly.

Mapping.

Rebuilding a system that refused to exist.

There's always a pattern.

Kade moved.

Fast.

Tovin reacted.

Calculation first.

He stepped left.

Avoided the strike.

Adjusted.

Another attack

Different angle

Tovin shifted again.

Precise.

It worked.

For a moment.

Then

The ground beneath him dropped

Too soon.

His footing broke.

Kade's strike landed.

Tovin staggered.

"…No."

He reset.

Faster this time.

Thinking harder.

Adjust variables.

Account for inconsistency.

Find the pattern.

Kade attacked again.

Tovin moved.

But the timing.

Didn't align.

The strike hit again.

Harder.

He dropped to one knee.

"…This is wrong," he muttered.

Kade stepped closer.

"No."

A pause.

"You are."

That

Did something.

Tovin looked up.

Eyes sharper now.

But not calm anymore.

"…Everything follows rules," he said again.

Kade shook his head.

"And what happens when it doesn't?"

Silence.

Tovin didn't answer.

Because that question

Had no solution.

The world shifted again.

More chaotic.

More unstable.

Kade didn't wait this time.

He attacked immediately.

Tovin reacted

But slower.

Because now

He wasn't just calculating.

He was doubting.

The strike came

He tried to predict

Tried to adjust

It hit.

Again.

Tovin stumbled back.

Frustration broke through.

"…Then what do you expect me to do?!" he snapped.

Silence.

The others looked up.

That was new.

Kade didn't react.

"Stop calculating."

Tovin froze.

"…That's not possible."

"It is."

"No," Tovin said immediately.

"That's all I have."

The words came faster now.

Sharper.

"If I don't calculate, I can't predict."

"If I can't predict, I can't adapt."

"If I can't adapt"

He stopped.

His breathing wasn't steady anymore.

"…I fail."

Silence.

Kade stepped closer.

"You're already failing."

That landed.

Hard.

Tovin clenched his fists.

"…Then give me something else," he said.

Kade's answer was immediate.

"No."

Silence.

Tovin stared at him.

"…What?"

"You don't get another system," Kade said.

A pause.

"You learn to act without one."

Tovin shook his head.

"…That's not learning."

Kade's gaze sharpened.

"That's surviving."

The world snapped again.

Chaos.

Kade attacked.

And this time.

Tovin didn't have time to think.

The strike came.

Fast.

Unpredictable.

His mind tried.

To calculate.

To process.

To solve.

But there wasn't enough time.

So his body moved.

Instinct.

He stepped back

Just barely avoiding it.

Tovin froze.

"…That"

Another strike.

He moved again.

No calculation.

Just reaction.

It worked.

"…No," he said quietly.

Another attack

He shifted

Messy.

Unrefined.

But it worked.

"…This is inefficient," he said.

But his voice.

Wasn't convincing anymore.

Because something else was happening.

He was surviving.

Kade pressed harder.

Faster attacks.

Less structure.

More chaos.

Tovin tried to think again.

Tried to regain control.

And immediately.

He failed.

The strike hit.

He fell to one knee again.

"…Why" he started.

And stopped.

Because he knew.

Thinking

Was slowing him down.

Silence.

"…I don't trust it," he said quietly.

Kade didn't ask what.

He already knew.

"Instinct."

Tovin nodded slightly.

"…It's unreliable."

Kade stepped closer.

"So are you."

That hit harder than anything else.

Tovin looked down.

For the first time

Not analyzing.

Not solving.

Just… feeling.

"…I was taught to eliminate uncertainty," he said.

The world shifted.

The city returned.

Perfect.

Structured.

The older man stood before him again.

"Emotion introduces error."

"Instinct introduces failure."

"Perfection requires control."

Tovin's younger self nodded.

"I understand."

Back in the present.

Tovin's hands tightened.

"…I built everything around that," he said.

Kade's voice was calm.

"And now it's failing."

Silence.

Tovin exhaled slowly.

"…Then what am I supposed to rely on?"

Kade didn't answer immediately.

Then

"Yourself."

Tovin looked up.

"…I am relying on myself."

Kade shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"You're relying on what you were taught."

Silence.

That

That broke something.

Tovin's breathing faltered.

"…That's all I know," he said.

Kade stepped closer.

"Then learn something new."

The world shifted again.

Chaos returning.

Kade stepped back.

"Again."

Tovin stood slowly.

Not composed.

Not certain.

For the first time

He didn't have an answer.

And for the first time

That terrified him.
