Chapter 60: The Point of Fracture

They didn't move right away.

Not because they were afraid.

But because now…

Every movement mattered.

Above them.

Dravok watched.

Silent.

Unmoving.

But present in everything.

Kade's voice cut through the stillness.

"…We test it."

No hesitation.

No delay.

Bram let out a breath.

"…Figures."

Lira rolled her shoulders.

Trying to shake off the lingering pressure.

"…Coordinated, right?" she asked.

Tovin nodded.

"…Synchronized movement. Controlled output. Minimal resistance."

"…We're really calling this minimal?" Bram muttered.

Nyra stepped forward.

Her expression calm.

But focused.

"…We follow Kael's lead."

Kael didn't argue.

Because this time.

He understood his role.

Not leader.

Anchor.

"…We move together," he said.

A pause.

"…No one breaks formation."

That word hung in the air.

Formation.

Structure against something that ignored it.

Kade gave a single nod.

"…Go."

Kael stepped up first.

Out of the depression.

The pressure hit instantly.

But this time—

He didn't fight it.

He adjusted.

Lower stance.

Breathing controlled.

Flow instead of resistance.

Behind him.

The others followed.

Bram.

Nyra.

Lira.

Tovin.

Each step.

Measured.

Each movement.

Intentional.

The pressure increased.

Not violently.

Gradually.

Testing.

"…Hold it…" Kael said quietly.

Nyra extended her control.

Not to block.

But to stabilize the group's rhythm.

Bram adjusted his footing.

Absorbing the weight instead of pushing back.

Lira moved lightly.

Shifting angles to avoid direct force.

Tovin tracked everything.

Micro-adjusting position.

For a moment.

It worked.

They moved forward.

Together.

In sync.

The pressure responded.

Increased.

"…Still stable," Tovin said.

Kael nodded.

"…Keep going."

Another step.

The ground beneath them trembled slightly.

The basin pulsed.

Dravok noticed.

"…Progress."

The voice pressed into them.

Heavier this time.

Not just weight.

Expectation.

Nyra's breath faltered.

"…It's increasing faster"

"…Adjust," Kael said.

They did.

Barely.

The pressure doubled.

Bram grunted.

His knee dipping slightly.

"…Still good!" he forced out.

Lira's movements slowed.

Her precision slipping.

"…Not… ideal…" she muttered.

Tovin's voice tightened.

"…Threshold approaching."

Kael stepped forward again.

The pull surged.

The pressure locked onto him.

But spread across them.

That was new.

"…It's adapting," Nyra said.

Kade's voice came sharp.

"…Then you adapt faster."

Another step.

And everything broke.

The pressure spiked.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

Crushing.

Absolute.

Nyra gasped.

Her control shattering.

"…I can't!"

The formation wavered.

Just slightly.

But that was enough.

The pressure shifted.

Targeting the weakest point.

Lira.

Her footing slipped.

Her rhythm broke.

"…No" she whispered.

The weight slammed into her.

Full force.

Her body hit the ground instantly.

Hard.

Breath gone.

Eyes wide.

Unfocused.

"…Lira!" Bram shouted.

He moved.

Breaking formation.

Mistake.

The pressure surged again.

Wider.

Harsher.

Bram dropped to one knee.

Struggling.

Tovin's balance broke.

His calculations collapsing.

Nyra's control spiraled.

Trying to compensate.

Failing.

Everything fell apart.

All at once.

Kael felt it.

The fracture.

Not in the ground.

In them.

"…STOP!" he shouted.

The Forgotten surged violently.

Stabilizing.

Forcing space.

Forcing balance.

But.

Too late.

Lira didn't move.

Her body.

Still.

Not dead.

But gone.

Overwhelmed.

The pressure eased.

Not because they resisted.

Because it chose to.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Broken.

Kael dropped beside her.

"…Lira."

No response.

Nyra rushed forward.

Hands trembling.

Trying to stabilize her.

"…She's breathing," she said quickly.

A pause.

"…But her mind"

She stopped.

Because she didn't know how to finish that.

Bram clenched his fists.

"…We were doing fine…" he muttered.

Tovin's voice was quiet.

"…We failed at the point of escalation."

Kade stepped forward.

His expression.

Unusually hard.

"…No," he said.

A pause.

"…You failed at the point of fracture."

Silence.

Because he was right.

They weren't overwhelmed by pressure.

They were broken by imbalance.

Kael looked up.

Toward the basin.

Toward Dravok.

His voice came low.

"…You pushed too far."

The response came instantly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…You broke too early."

Silence.

Kael's jaw tightened.

Because part of him.

Knew that was true.

They weren't ready.

Not as a unit.

Not under that level of force.

Kade looked at the team.

Then at Kael.

"…Now you understand," he said.

A pause.

"…This isn't about strength."

His voice lowered.

"…It's about not breaking."

Kael looked back at Lira.

Still unconscious.

Still.

And something in him shifted.

Not doubt.

Not fear.

Resolve.

"…Then we fix that," he said.

A pause.

"…No matter what it takes."

Above them.

Dravok watched.

Silent.

Unmoving.

But this time—

There was something else.

Not approval.

Not satisfaction.

Expectation.

Because now

They had reached the first limit.

And broken against it.
